A Flip of the Coin: Chapter 2 – Caught in the Spider’s Web

Chapter 2 – Caught in the Spider’s Web
The inner city looks worse than where we were before with rubble and broken buildings blocking certain streets. It’s almost like a maze because of how many turns we have to take and how many buildings we need to cut through. Markings and arrows on the side of buildings tell us that they’re pointing us in the direction of help. Some say weird things that make it sound like a paradise with some sort of goddess queen in it who performs miracles. Maybe this is the goddess that Kitsune was talking about.
“Eerie, can you tell me more about what you know is going on in the world?”
“I know that all order in the world collapsed and no one knew what exactly ended it.”
“What do you remember about it because I’ve recently woken up?”
“Not much that I can make sense of. I woke up yesterday or so many hours ago. I can barely tell what time of day it is because of the sky.”
“What about our appearances? I mean, you look like a cat.”
“I think it has to do with a thing that our appearances are related to our souls somehow. People can change their clothes, but the clothes will change to something more suitable for a person's personality. Besides, I like the way I look. You know you don’t look so different from me. You have sharp, cat-like teeth too.”
“I do? Huh. I guess you’re right because of how my nails and teeth are sharper. We also both have cats as assistants.”
“That’s right. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out that we’re sisters or twins.”
“Hmm. I don’t think I had a sibling.”
“A lot of people have completely forgotten parts of their life because of what happened and one of the ways to remember yourself is by fighting. That’s one of the many reasons the city looks the way it does.”
“What fight do you think caused this?”
“I have no clue.”
We’re looking at a mess of webs that string between the tall buildings. Some of these webs block our path and are thicker than they seem. These seem to be spider webs.
“Ah!”
Speaking of spiders…
“What is it, Val?”
“There are spiders in these webs. It looks like their strengthening and adding layers to it.”
“There must be someone who can spawn them. I’ve heard of people who have grown their power to the point where they can make their animal use different abilities. We’ll have to be careful not to alert whoever commands these spiders. Don’t touch the webs or bother the spiders.”
“…I already touched the webs.”
“You what?”
“That’s what made the spiders come out.”
“Then we just have to hope that we’re dealing with someone friendly.”
“Oh, you’ll find that I’m more than friendly,” a girl above us says as she descends on a large spider followed by a squad of other large spiders, “My name is Sybella. I am the guardian of the city ruled by Queen Shea.”
“You guard the city by yourself?” I ask.
“Technically yes since my spiders are an extension of myself. My little scouts have told me that you’re coming here to learn more about what caused all of this. Unfortunately for you, the city is already full of people like that who wish to know the queen’s wisdom. You’ll have to search somewhere else.”
“Somewhere else?” Eerie says, “The entire city looks dead and I’m sure other places are like this. Can’t you let us through? We’ll wait in line for our questions to be answered if we have to.”
“Eerie…I don’t think…”
“No, she has a fair point, but you are not allowed into the city unless you want to go through me. Come to think of it now, that’s exactly what you should do. My little scouts and my victories have told me all that I need to know about you.”
“You know about us? Just tell us what you know. We don’t need to fight,” Eerie says.
“No, I do.”
Sybella flips a coin that flies up into the air. Dozens of large spiders descend from the webs above and shoot their string at us. Vic and Torio spring into action and cut the strings with ease.
“That’s surprising. The string usually guarantees me an easy victory,” Sybella says.
I’m a little surprised that Vic was able to cut the string and in such a fast way. I guess we got stronger from the last fight.
“We’re stronger than we look! Bring her down to us, Vic!”
“Do the same, Torio!”
Vic and Torio rapidly cut at the strings the hold the buildings together. Their speed is like that of Kitsune’s fox, so the buildings are quickly crumbling.
“You don’t have to wait for me to come down because I’m coming to yo-you!”
Both our cats have managed to bring down the webs connecting the buildings, which results in the rubble crushing Sybella and her spiders.
“Good job, boy!” I say to Vic as he comes up to me and rubs his face against mine.
“You did great, Torio,” Eerie says as her cat does the same.
The rubble then starts to move as dozens of little spiders crawl out of it. Sybella’s larger spiders then break out of the rubble along with her.
“You'll have to do more than that to beat me!”
Sybella’s smaller spiders swarm both of our cats. Their little bites don’t hurt that much on their own by the swarm is overwhelming.
“Concentrate on Sybella, Vic!”
“Don’t worry about the smaller ones, Torio. Just bear the pain and take out the larger one!”
The larger spiders that aren’t Sybella’s main spider use themselves as her sword and shield as they form a barrier around her. They use their pincers to try to stab at our cats, but they can’t react fast enough as they tear apart the barrier.
“You two are more than I thought you would be,” Sybella says as she and her spider try to retreat while fighting.
Our cats are too fast for her and cut her spider to pieces, which defeats her.
“We did it!” Eerie and I say as we clap. Even our cats clap their paws together.
I look over to Sybella to see her body and her spiders disappear, but her head doesn’t disappear. Eerie and I look at each other in confusion. Sybella’s head then stands up as the head and legs of a spider come out of it.
“I won’t be so easily defeated,” Sybella says as her head jumps around.
Our cats are unable to catch her as she escapes into the thick webs. We chase after her as she sends swarms of large and small spiders alike to slow us down. In the chaos, we’ve lost sight of Sybella, so we concentrate on surviving. Once the larger spiders are defeated, Eerie and I command our cats to get the smaller spiders off them who have done a lot of damage to them over time. The two cats rub off one another and shake off the small spiders until they’re all off. Now that every spider is dead, we search for Sybella.
Part of a broken building is broken through as Sybella in her new form comes out. Half of her body is now part spider with her hands and face being more spider-like.
“Your power is going to be useful to me. You should feel honored. I’ve never had to use this form until now,” Sybella says as she begins to attack our cats.
She sends out flying small spiders after them since they’re her most effective force. These spiders inject some kind of venom into our cats, which makes them woozy. Vic and Torio are unable to fight effectively as Sybella tosses them around while her spiders continue to bite at them. Come on, Vic! Concentrate like how we did last time. You can do it. Just fight through the pain with me. We can do this if we combine our strength.
Eerie and I scream as we lend our energy to our cats. Our combined energy allows them to get the strength to bear their pain and effectively fight Sybella until they cut through her defenses and her.
As her entire body along with her head disappear, she says, “I hope you’re happy with yourself because of what you’ve done you monster.”
My mind is then filled with memories of Sybella at a high school where she would defend her friends from bullies and terrible teachers. Again, I see the exploding light that ended the world. I then see Sybella striking a deal with a girl who I think is the queen she was talking about. The next memories after that are just battles. There is a memory that catches my attention that being one that doesn’t seem like hers. It’s of a girl and what looks to be her boyfriend with her. They both are seen at the center of the explosion with a priest attempting to stop them. That’s where the memory ends.
Eerie and I tell each other what we saw, and it turns out that we got the same memories.
“That last memory was a strange one,” I say.
I wonder why I felt a close connection to it.
“Maybe the rest of what she knows about us was just told to her?” Eerie suggests.
“Probably, but I can’t remember that memory unless I need more of the pieces from someone else.”
“That’s how people end up fighting so much. They want to find out who they were so bad that they end up taking the lives of so many people. Some even continue to fight because they didn’t like the person they remembered.”
“I hope that doesn’t become us.”
“Me too. Let’s see if this queen will give us the answers we need. It looks like we made a mess since Sybella’s spiders and webs were the only things keeping these buildings together. Let’s see if our cats have a new ability.”
Torio can turn the surface of his body into spikes, which allows him to cut through the rubble.
“That was awesome!”
Well? Let’s not let them show us up, Vic. Wow! Vic uses his tail as a long whip that can cut through the rubble as it were paper. That’s amazing, boy! Eerie and I look at each other with a satisfied smile as our cats dig through the rubble towards our destination and hopefully the answers we seek.

Please, Don't Leave Me - (Song/Poem Attempt #50)

I was broken for the longest time
My sins were my master
My life seemed worth less than nothing
There was nothing and no one to live for

I was ashamed of everything I was
If you hadn't stopped me, I would've taken my life multiple times
When I found you, my life was given meaning
There was and is nothing that compares to the love you give me

But still, I let my past get to me
No matter how hard I try, I cannot be perfection
Despite my failings, you give me another chance
You let me pick myself up and make up for what I've done

Please, don't leave me, don't give up on me, don't stop loving me
Please, don't leave me, don't give up on me, don't stop loving me
Because I honestly and truly dedicate my existence to loving you

No one can replace you
No one loves me as much as you
No one does as much for me as you do
It would be better for me to stop existing than be without you

I know I can be a hypocrite
I know I can be slow
I know I can be weak
Grant me another chance so you can stay with me

Let me pay the price for what I've done
Let me suffer the worst agonies for your sake
Purify me through fire to make me like you
Let me do all these things so I never lose you

Please, don't leave me, don't give up on me, don't stop loving me
Please, don't leave me, don't give up on me, don't stop loving me
Because I honestly and truly dedicate my existence to loving you

Please, don't leave me, don't give up on me, don't stop loving me
Please, don't leave me, don't give up on me, don't stop loving me
Because I honestly and truly dedicate my existence to loving you

My soul is torn apart, infected then purified by your mercy
Over and over again
I begin to lose hope
But then I remember your love for me
And I pick myself up, smile, and embrace a new day

Because I know that you'll always be with me
I know that you'll never abandon me
As long as I stay close to you, I never lack anything
Because you are my everything and nothing is good without you

This song/poem is loosely inspired by Never say Never by The Fray.

A Flip of the Coin: Chapter 1 - Rude Awakening

Chapter 1 – Rude Awakening
…uhhh…what happened? Where am I? I’m in some kind of dirty and destroyed store. What’s with all the candles, pictures, and little trinkets? There’s a huge white lion on my lap. Is it real-Ah! It is real and it’s awake! Huh? It’s rubbing its face against mine-hey! Now, it’s licking my face. This lion is more like a loving house cat rather than a wild feline.
“What are you doing here? What’s your name? Mine is Val.”
When I touch the lion’s head, I hear the name Vic in a boy’s voice in my head. There’s something familiar about the voice. Whatever the case is I can’t concern myself with that right now. I have to find out where I am and what happened to me. My clothes seemed to have changed. I don’t remember wearing this ripped purple dress and I definitely didn’t get any tattoos.
“Huh? What is it, boy?”
The lion is nudging me forward. Does he know what I think? He just nodded his head.
“Oh, you do. So, can I call you Vic?”
He nods his head.
“Alright, Vic. Let’s see where we are.”
A single step outside fills me with a sense of despair and dread. We find ourselves in a city with broken buildings and sidewalks. There’s trash and debris everywhere as if this place was a warzone. What happened here? I look back at the store I was in and see designs of purple roses, angels, and demons on it. Was it some kind of shrine? I don’t understand what I was doing there.
This city is eerily quiet. There are signs of battle and conflict everywhere. All the shops and houses look like they’ve been vandalized. The sky is darkened with no sun or moon in sight so I can’t tell what time of day it is. Did the end of the world happen? That would explain the empty streets and the chilly weather. Huh? I hear someone walking. It’s honestly so quiet that I can hear it.
“Hello? Is anyone out there?”
Vic and I are looking around but don’t see anyone despite hearing the sound nearby. Vic then runs straight ahead. I guess he senses where the source of the sound is coming from. He is a lion after all. After following him, we stop near a house. It looks like someone used to live here and still does by the looks of it. There are piles of clothes along with a broken picture of a family by the bedside. Among the piles of dirty clothes are creepy looking fox masks. As I’m looking through the junk, a shadow looms over me, which forces me to look up.
“Hello,” a boy in a fox mask says.
I jump back with Vic by my side looking the man in the face. His mask looks chipped and his clothes have small tears in them like the rest of his clothes. The tears in his clothes reveal his skin, which appears to be burned. One of the eyes of the mask is missing and I can see his black eye in it. He has a white fox with him like how I have Vic with me.
“Who are you?” I ask the boy.
“I’ve forgotten my original name, so call me Kitsune.”
“My name is Val. Do you know what happened here?”
“You’re unaware? Have you been in a shelter for the past month or so?”
“Sort of. I just woke up not too long ago.”
“A goddess ended the world and separated everyone from their sinful side.”
“A goddess?”
“Yes, and you look very similar to her. I even saw you exit the place where she was once worshipped by many people. I still go there every now and then. Are you her offspring by any chance?”
“No.”
“You must be some kind of offspring of her or maybe even a pretender. I’ll know when I defeat you.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Oh, you probably didn’t know. In this new world, if I flip a coin and defeat you in battle with my fox, then I can take your power along with your memories.”
“I’m telling you everything I know! I swear I don’t know anything else!”
“We’ll see about that.”
Kitsune flips a coin in the air and his fox starts attacking me. Vic defends me as I try to run away but I can’t. There’s some invisible barrier around the house.
“Once a battle starts, it won’t stop until one of us is defeated.”
“Then I guess we don’t have a do we Vic? Get him!”
Vic slams Kitsune’s fox down with his claws then uses his head to toss the fox into Kitsune. He then bites on Kitsune’s head.
“Great job, Vic!”
What? The fox isn’t down for good even though Vic is biting down on Kitsune’s head. The fox has just bit down on Vic’s neck while cutting at him with his claws. I don’t know why but I can feel the pain he’s in. It doesn’t feel like I feel it in its entirety for some reason, not that I want to. Despite the pain he’s in, Vic manages to swipe the fox off him.
“You can’t defeat me directly. You must defeat my fox to win.”
What’s with these stupid rules?
“Okay, you heard him, Vic!”
The fox doesn’t give Vic a chance to move as it slashes at him then runs away. It keeps repeating this while Vic tries to fight back but isn’t able to because the fox is so fast. It doesn’t hit very hard, however, Vic is can’t lay a claw on it and the hits keep coming. My lion is getting mad and just slashing at everything around him.
“Concentrate, Vic! Don’t let it get to you!”
Vic appears to be concentrating with the fox attempting to break it. If we can feel each other’s pain and thoughts, maybe I can help him concentrate. I close my eyes and try to concentrate. Come on, Vic. Concentrate and win! There he is! I open my eyes to see Vic squash the fox into the ground which cracks and shakes the ground. The fox struggles to get up. It looks up at Vic only to get swatted to the side. That appears to have finished it. The coin finally falls to the ground. How long was it spinning in the air anyway? I was too concentrated on the battle to notice. Kitsune falls to the ground and struggles to get up.
“Thank you for freeing me from this life, Val. You really do seem like a goddess,” Kitsune says as his body and fox disappear piece by piece into a light.
After their bodies are gone, my mind is rushed with images of a boy with his family in this house. They look outside to see an explosion of light covering the city. So, that’s what happened. The rest of the memories are blurry. Kitsune fought so many other people after he lost his parents. He even fought his friends, but he felt terrible after doing so. I have glimpses of who he called the goddess and she does look like me. She was laying in the same place as me. Maybe I do come from her somehow? Nah, that’s impossible. I don’t know. It’s all still so confusing to me.
I feel sorry for Kitsune. Hopefully, he’s in a better place now. Both Vic and I’s bodies are mysteriously healed from the fight. I guess that’s another perk of winning. I even feel a bit stronger. Since there’s nothing else I can do here, so I move on. Vic senses something and looks behind us. I hope it’s not another fight. When I turn around, I see a crow in the distance sitting on the roof. It caws while staring at us. I’m assuming it’s a normal crow, but since it seems that people have animals as protectors, I get Vic to keep moving instead of bothering it, however, he keeps looking behind us. I can’t but help feel this ominous presence behind us. For now, I ignore it.
The crow continues to caw, and I can hear it fly closer to us with sounds of footsteps heading in our direction. Is someone really following us? What do they want with me? Do they want my memories or am I someone important because I woke up where that “goddess” was? I’m running away with Vic, but it sounds like the crow and its master are catching up to us. How is this person and their crow faster than us? It seems like we can’t lose them no matter how many turns we make and how fast we run.
“Ah-!”
Someone pulled me into a dark alley and have their hand over my mouth.
“Shh. Be quiet and that man won’t get us,” a girl says.
Since I don’t feel like I have a choice, I stay quiet as I see the crow’s shadow fly around the area then leave. After a few more minutes of waiting, the girl lets me go.
“It’s safe now, but stay quiet just in case,” she says.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Eerie.”
When I see Eerie in the light, I see that she has cat ears, a similar dress to mine, and has a panther with her.
“You don’t want to fight me, do you?”
“My friend Torio and I don’t want to fight you. I want to help you figure what’s going on.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because I don’t have the best idea either. I also want to fix what’s happened and I need help to do that.”
“You want to fix what happened? Look at the way the world is. There’s no fixing it.”
“Of course I can. I might not be able to fix everything, but I’m not going to let people continue to live in these conditions. Think about the help I could give you when we work together. We both have fierce felines so it’s like we were meant to work together.”
“Okay, fine. Can you tell me anything I don’t know? How about the battles? Why do we need to flip a coin and win with our animals?”
“You flip a coin because it’s the practice an angel supposedly told us to do it this way. It works so something bigger than all of us is at work here. It is said that the result of the battle is the Will of God. From what I’ve learned, our animals are manifestations of our souls, our core being. It makes sense for the defeat of it to be our defeat especially since our normal bodies don’t feel pain on their own. We can’t even feel hunger or thirst.”
“Oh, that’s right. I haven’t thought about that when I woke up.”
“Any other questions?”
“Not that I can think of that you can answer.”
“Well, that’s minorly insulting but I understand why you’re thinking that.”
“Do you know where we should go next?”
“The city is supposed to be populated with groups of people. They can probably tell us more.”
“Alright. Since there’s nothing else better to do, I might as well join you.”
“Shall we go then? I’ll lead the way.”
“Okay.”
I don’t know what to do, but I have to make the best of this situation somehow. Vic is rubbing up against my leg while looking at me. Don’t worry, boy. We’ll make it through this.

Undertaker of Sorrows: Sorrowful Heart 1 – Infectious Despair

Sorrowful Heart 1 – Infectious Despair
There’s been silence in Roger’s house for nearly two years with the deaths of his children still weighing heavy on his soul as if they just died. He still has their torn clothes with their dried blood still on it. His house is as dirty and empty as if it was abandoned. The beds are undone, the kitchen is a mess, and dust covers almost every surface. Things that were broken have stayed broken. The washer and shower are rarely used and even though there’s barely anything in the fridge, the trash and recycle cans outside are filled to the brim.
It’s the birthday of his son and Roger has gotten cupcakes. He puts three cupcakes near three out of six chairs. He then sits down to eat his cupcake while looking through a photo album. There are only pictures of him and his children in the album though there are pictures with the faces of certain people torn off. Roger couldn’t bring himself to throw away a picture of his smiling children, so he cut out the “imperfections” to make it bearable to look at or rather easier. Every time he looks at the pictures in a photo or in his mind, he remembers his happy memories and feels sad. Sadness itself is the normal feeling for him and it shows on his face as the way he previously looked in the pictures make them look like they were taken decades ago.
He slams the photo album close as his emotions are becoming too much to bear. Looking through his mail, he finds bills, junk mail, and a surprise. One of the pieces of mail is a letter. There’s no address or anything either than Roger’s own. The sender only identifies himself as a friend.  Curious about it, he opens the letter to read it. The letter says,
“It's time to stop your mourning
It's time to wake to a new morning
Because this is a warning you should know
So you can be saved from your woes

You know what causes you despair
Your time for mourning has been fair
Now rise from your sadness
And taste the sweetness of gladness

The Undertaker of Sorrows is coming after you
He knows what you've been through
He wants you to succeed
But if you fail, he will do more than make you bleed

Your ways have caused others harm
And the state of your soul is cause for alarm
So let go of what causes you sorrow
Or the Undertaker will not let you live after tomorrow”
Roger has heard of the Undertaker of Sorrows, but his garbage can filled with crosses, Bibles, and pictures of the saints says his view of the afterlife and the supernatural, so he throws the letter in the trash. After eating his cupcake and throwing away the rest, Roger goes to bed in a worse mood than usual. He wakes up later and gets ready for another day of work. Once he’s ready, he leaves the house while stepping on the few bugs that share his home. Even though he joins the crowds of workers as he makes his way to work, he feels alone.
This is until he sees a strange man in the crowd. The man catches Roger’s eye because of the undertaker outfit he’s wearing and his hands that seem to be stuck in constant prayer. Their eyes meet as the undertaker looks at him then smiles. The Undertaker of Sorrows rhyme then plays itself in his head again before the undertaker he sees disappears into the crowd. Roger rubs his eyes then shrugs off what he saw.
When Roger arrives at work, he enters his room, which is almost as dirty and unappealing to look at as his house. The only thing that makes it look appealing are the certificates, awards, and dusty mini trophies from years ago. He looks through old and new emails of declining morale, reminders of better days, his duty to fix it, and to get over the past. Despite holding onto his job by a string, he types up excuses for his behavior and talks about making exercises that the company can do to improve morale that don’t involve him being in it. After typing the emails, he looks up to catch a few of his coworkers who were looking at him with sadness in their eyes. They look away then go somewhere else to carry on their conversation. Roger shrugs then sighs while looking up at the ceiling for a bit then looks outside his room again to see a familiar face.
The undertaker from before is back and talking to one of his coworkers. Both of them appear to be having a fun conversation, but something about the undertaker unnerves Roger. He looks back down at his computer to get back to work. It goes silent outside his room before he hears what sounds like something being slipped underneath his door. He goes to check it and sees the undertaker gently smiling at him while waving. Roger waves back with an uneasy look on his face before looking at the letter underneath his door. The letter has the Undertaker of Sorrows rhyme on it to his surprise. When he looks back up, the undertaker’s face has drastically changed to that of what the Undertaker of Sorrows is rumored to look like, which makes Roger leap back in fear. This is only for a spilt second as the undertaker’s face goes back to normal at the blink of an eye.
Roger keeps his eyes on the undertaker before rubbing his eyes then opening them again to see that the undertaker has disappeared. Thinking that his stress and tiredness is just getting to him, he makes himself coffee in his room while also taking some medicine to dull the pain. The workday goes on with emails getting sent to him that advertise counseling, psychiatrists, local church events, and the like that seem to be catered towards him. He dismisses this as the advertising algorithms that just want him to spend money or join their groups because of his internet history. Once the day is done, he heads out of his room and turns to lock his room only to find the Undertaker of Sorrows rhyme nailed on his door. He rips up the rhyme then storms out the door.
Along the way to his home, Roger decides to stop at the nearby bar but isn’t allowed in. In a worse mood than he is usually in, he storms down the streets while not caring about the people he walks through or the homeless he steps on. As soon as he gets home, he slams his mail on the table before sitting down to cool off. Once he’s had a drink from the fridge, he looks through his mail. Again, he finds advertisements for things that can help him be freed from his sadness and among the letters, he finds the Undertaker’s rhyme yet again. Roger thinks about letting go of his sadness but can’t bring himself to bear the pain. For the rest of the night, the memories of his previous life torture him until the broken clocks turn to eleven fifty-five.
This confirms to Roger that the Undertaker of Sorrows myth is just that. A myth. A knock at his door disturbs his sigh of relief. He gets up to see no one at the door, but he feels uneasy. He then closes the door only to see the same undertaker from before sitting in the chair he was watching TV in. The undertaker slowly turns around to reveal his horrifying face. His face that the Undertaker of Sorrows is said to have, however, it’s even more horrifying in person. The eye with a mouth in the pupil along with a wide eerie grin chills his soul.
The Undertaker sits and smiles while Roger stares back while trying to open the door, which he is unable to open. He then moves to the windows and tries to open, but they can’t open nor are they breakable. The two still lock eyes as the Undertaker hasn’t moved or done anything. The rhyme keeps playing and playing in Roger’s head as if it was begging him to do what it wanted. Instead of thinking about the rhyme, Roger backs up the stairs while keeping his eyes on the Undertaker. Once his eyes are off the monster, he turns to his bedroom where he sees the Undertaker pop out of it. This sudden scare makes Roger fall down the stairs.
When he looks back at the Undertaker, Roger sees his children’s torn clothes. The Undertaker tears the clothes apart into scraps. Roger scrambles to grabs the pieces and only manages to catch a few. Disappointed in what he did, the Undertaker puts one hand behind his back and waggles his finger while shaking his head. The only other possible way out is the back, so Roger runs to the kitchen and locks the door behind him. He tries to open the door, but that along with the nearby window is locked. The Undertaker’s rhyme gets his attention on the table. He looks at it again and feels like there’s more than the letter in his hands. Putting the letter down, he finds a picture of his children’s graves along with pictures that his children drew of the family. He begins to cry as the feelings overwhelm him.
After he wipes away his tears, he sees that the Undertaker is in the room with Roger’s children holding his hands. His children appear to be like angels with glowing skin and their bodies uncorrupted by their violent deaths. Roger tries his best in trying to tear his children away from the Undertaker but is unable to, so he punches him which makes his children disappear. Roger continues uselessly punching the Undertaker until he grabs the next punch then takes his heart out of his chest.
Despite lacking a heart, Roger is still living even though he is in extreme amounts of pain as his body slowly dies. He is unable to scream, move, or change his fate. The Undertaker then shoves Roger’s heart into his throat until Roger chokes to death. Once he is dead, the Undertaker disappears to attempt to relieve another person of their sorrows.

Every hero is tested and every world comes to an end. What Benedetto did previously will bear their fruits in these last two volumes of the story as he and humanity go through Hell metaphorically and literally. Humanity must choose between Heaven and Hell in the last moments of their world before a new one can be born.  This book also includes lore, tales, and side quests to give more interesting details to expand the world of the series. There are also some Behind the Story details to show even more insight behind these fantasy stories.

Blood, Honor, and Time: Volume 3 - Side Quests - Quest 3 – Imposter

After returning from another trip to look for supplies and survivors, I come home to find someone who looks like me. He’s commanding my Sparrows and already telling them about an approaching imposter.
“And there he is now!” he says, “Strike him down now!”
“Hold on! Don’t listen to him, he’s the fake!”
“I’ve already shown you I’m the real hero with all of the miracles I’ve performed.”
“Since when have I performed miracles? I haven’t even time traveled yet.”
“And there you go. What kind of hero just accepts the status quo and doesn’t try to improve his people’s situation?”
The people around us are starting a commotion. Where’s Donna, Bonito, and Lilia?
“Where’s my wife and advisors, Bonito and Lilia? They could tell the difference between the real and fake one.”
“They’re dead! Their bodies were found skewered in the streets. You should know about it!”
Everybody seems to confirm this. It can’t be!
“What are you trying to say?! You did something to them, didn’t you?!”
“I’m not to blame since they were killed before I got here.”
The Sparrows I took with me try to pick up for me, but the crowd outshouts them.
“The people are with me. You might as well go back to your evil master or do you want to try fighting against all of us?”
I don’t have any evidence on hand to prove that I’m the real me. There is one idea that just came to my head. It’s crazy, but it’ll definitely work if I’m right.
I say, “How about we do this the one way that will prove that we’re God’s chosen hero?”
“Oh yeah? And what’s that?”
“We’ll have an executioner try to cut our heads off. Surely, God will save the one who is His chosen.”
“Ah-ahaha! Are you sure you want to do something so risky?”
“I’m sure of it. Now, if you’re really a hero, you’ll lay down your life for humanity.”
“You got yourself a deal.”
As people gather around, our hands are bound and we bow our heads as we await our fate. The fake hero smiles at me and I smile back confident in the results. I close my eyes and patiently wait as the executioners raise their swords. I feel the blade hit my neck, but nothing happens. People gasped all around us. I still feel the blade in my neck. What happened?
I stand up as my hands are freed then take the sword out of my neck. It hit me and got stuck in my neck but didn’t leave a mark or anything. Looking over to the fake hero, I see that his head is cut off. That was obviously going to happen in my head, however, everyone is still in shock. Thinking the sword might be defective, I use the sword to cut a nearby piece of wood and it slices through it with ease. Most people get on their knees to apologize while my few silent supporters cheer for me. I smile at them and raise my fist in victory.
There’s something strange about this sword. The handle feels strange as if there are two. I then put at the handles and now I have two swords. They radiate with a divine light that lights up the entire city for ten seconds before fading. The bodies of Donna, Lilia, and Bonito have disappeared. My Sparrows and I search the entire town to find them. Eventually, we find them tied up and knocked out in my room. Thank you, God, that they’re still alive. Thank you so much and thank you for reminding me of your love for me.

Blood, Honor, and Time: Volume 3 - Side Quests - Quest 2 – The Battle Within

When we aren’t fighting demons physically, we’re fighting them mentally or spiritually. It’s said that the most important battle is fought inside because God is on our side. It is our choice if we give in to sin or continue to serve faithfully. It’s always been this way even before the end. We don’t think about its importance since our lives are in danger, but our souls are in danger as well, which is more important. There haven’t been as many attacks or ambushes. Instead, everyone is on edge including the people we find. The things we used to have in the past that made life easier and more comfortable are gone now along with the things we took pleasure in. It’s hard for a lot of people to get over it especially for those who worked and had the most. Everyone has their own vices and attachments to get over. It’s not an easy process for anyone.
So far, there have been several fights that have broken out within the group while others have deserted us. The impact of these events was kept to a minimum, but tensions might boil over soon. Nope. They’re boiling over right now. More fights have broken out after a long argument. I send my Sparrows to break up the fight, but they just end up getting in it as well. Even the priests are losing themselves.
I order everyone else to calm down and pray for everyone so that the fighting stops. The mages start a calming spell along with an exorcising spell to speed things up, but it’s going to take a while because of the number of people and the mages being affected too. I have my own troubles right now as well. It’s not as much trouble for me since I’m used to it. Some of the other people are used to it as well. Even Donna and Lilia are managing to stay sane. The same cannot be said for Bonito who is trying her best to control herself. Since she’s the one who helps me command my forces, she tries to set an example by controlling herself, but it’s hard for her to do so with how much squirming around she’s doing.
Huh? My vision and head get blurrier by the second. It’s like someone is stabbing two knives into the sides of my head. Everyone is trying to hold it together while praying. I can’t…concentrate…on…anything…No! I must concentrate on praying. I can’t let this pressure get to me. I have to hold out as long as I need to no matter how long that might be. It is the will of God that we are tested, and I gladly accept it. It doesn’t matter how much suffering I need to go through. I value what God wants me to do over what I want even if I’m suffering for it. You hear that demons? I won’t give in!
What’s going on now? Everything is getting clearer. The mages didn’t complete their spell and prayers were stopped in their track. Everyone has stopped fighting and calmed down. Along with the feeling in my head, the pressure that was crushing me from the inside is gone. We must’ve passed the test the God made for us or rather, I hope we all passed the test.

Blood, Honor, and Time: Volume 3 - Side Quests - Quest 1 – Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing

Ever since the world really started ending, my Sparrows and I have been gathering survivors and bringing them to La Santa Verde since it’s the safest town or rather the safest place to be at in general. Our attempts to gather people have been good so far, but there have been times when we were too late, or it was a demonic trap. Regardless if it’s a trap or not, if there’s someone life at risk, we go out to try to get them. We also go out on supply runs to find food since nothing can grow from the earth and everything that does is poisonous. It’s a good thing we stockpiled so much before the end started or else, we’d be in trouble with how many people we have already.
I’m off with a small search party to look for more survivors in the towns we haven’t checked. The town is relatively quiet, which usually means we’re about to walk into a trap. Fortunately for us, nothing happens, and we walk away with a crowd of ten people and supplies. As we’re going over our findings, we hear a commotion happening outside. Five people have been killed in the town and no one knows who did it. We must have infiltrators among the people we picked up. The exorcists and priests are away on an important mission, so we don’t have an easy and effective way of flushing out the demon. We gather everyone together in the main church and have everyone start praying.
The church and praying should help irritate the demons to make it stick out from the crowd, but everyone looks nervous. We then hear banging at the door and the walls of the church. I investigate the noise with a couple other Sparrows then come back to see that three people are dead. It appears that they killed themselves with their daggers they were keeping for protection. No one around them says they noticed them taking their own lives, which even stranger, but I think we’re closer to finding the infiltrators.
We further question the people who were around the people who were killed while still having everyone pray. We then ask them to recite their Baptismal Vows. At first, they don’t respond. When we ask them again, they start shaking. Asking them again results in them in confessing that they’re ex-devil worshippers. Apparently, they are possessed and have been seeking help because the demons were trying to get them from converting. This is why people have been dying. The people here weren’t in danger. The outsiders were.
I tell the ex-devil worshippers that, “We’ll help save you from these demons. Just hold on a bit longer. The priests should be back any second now.”
“What about my friends?”
“They wanted to convert, right?”
“Yes, but the demons possessed their bodies and killed them for it.”
“Then we should hope they were saved because they wanted to be Baptized. It’s called the Baptism of Desire, and since they died wanting to convert, they might’ve obtained Baptism by blood. We’ll pray for their souls.”
“We don’t know how to pray.”
“We’ll show you.”
After showing them how to pray, they calmed down. The priests come back and give the coverts the sacraments. We throw a celebration for the born again souls. The only thing that concerns me is if the others were saved. I hope they were.

Blood, Honor, and Time Volume 2: Side Quests - Quest 5 – Motives and Secrets

Bonito is my expert in politics and secrecy. She tells me what’s going on behind the scenes and the secrets in public especially those in the Cuchillos culture, which is extremely secretive. She’s told me that she’s come across something big that she needs me to be with her. This has to do with certain people in the upper class of society having their own plans for the end of the world. I don’t exactly have a soft spot for the upper class despite what others might say, but they do contribute a lot when it comes to funds, weapon forging, and the reinforcement of buildings. What the people I’m going after have is apparently something that I need both for the end of the world and to keep them focused on helping humanity as a whole rather than just themselves.
When I meet up with Bonito, she fills me in on what we need to do. She says that, “I’ve been watching these people even before we met. These families have a history of surviving the end of the world by themselves or so people seem to think. From what you tell me and what tales passed on say, few rarely survive on their own especially if they only protect themselves.”
“That’s right.”
“So, they must either have really good protection, God needs these families for an unknown purpose, they must be doing God’s will, or they’re liars. Thanks to everything you’ve given me, I’ve been able to find one of their end-times shelters. It’s in one of their mega towers that act as a shopping center. The only thing I don’t know is which part of the building is the actual shelter because it doesn’t seem to be heavily fortified. I figure out their secret or at least get it out of them in order to help us in the future.”
“Alright. I’ll help you in whatever way you say.”
“Good. Let’s get moving.”
I don’t like the way she said “good” and the smile she had while saying it. Does she know more than she’s letting on? It doesn’t seem like it. Maybe she just had a tempting thought when she said that. She still does express her interest in me every now and then even though I’ve completely denied her. I could almost swear that part of her reminds me of Donna except she isn’t as strong. Bonito is also more cunning and patient. I shouldn’t let this thought bother me.
The shopping center that we arrive at is moderately packed with people. This place is pretty popular it seems and has stores of all kinds such as; food, book, weapon, and clothing. It seems like a great shelter from what I’m seeing. Bonito has given me the names of and faces of who we should be looking for. She’s also given me an outfit with a mask to wear so I can go into the mall incognito. We’ll be going in pretending to be a couple. Even if someone thinks they recognize us, people should know that I wouldn’t dare be with another woman. Wait, is this part of Bonito’s plan to be closer to me? She did something similar the first time we met. It is a good plan for both the mission and her personal mission if I think about it. Whatever. I just hope she doesn’t try anything even though she kind of is right now by holding onto my arm.
Nope. I’ve got to think about something else. The architecture in this place is amazing. All of the turning wheels and parts to it are something that only the Cuchillos could pull off. Even the statues are moving and posing in different ways. This place even has things called escalators and elevators that bring people up and down the tower. We’re putting some of these contraptions in some buildings from other cultures now, but it’s very difficult since most buildings weren’t made for these things. The Cuchillos are the only ones who are going to have these luxuries at this rate.
“This is an amazing place. Have you been here before?” I say.
“A couple of times. I thought it would be better if I went with someone who’s closer to me than just some random guards.”
“You know I’m never going to marry you, right?”
“Being one of your mistresses is fine with me. That’s what I said before, right?”
“That means something completely different than what you’re thinking.”
“Regardless, you agreed to it.”
“Because I needed your help and not for any other reason.”
“It doesn’t matter. I always get what I want eventually.”
“Pay attention. I think I see some familiar faces.”
We see some people that are on Bonito’s list and listen in on their conversation while sitting nearby.
I see some other people around us and ask Bonito, “Do you think those people know who we are?”
“It doesn’t matter if they do because they know not to say anything.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because they know what I’ll do to them if they do say something.”
I’m not even sure what to say to Bonito. Part of me wants to believe that she’s well-meaning, but another part thinks that she’s just acting to survive the end of the world. Whatever the case is, we don’t hear anything interesting from the people we listen to. They just talk about family and business matters that don’t matter to us. I even ask Bonito if they could’ve been speaking in code, and she tells me that I’m just being silly.
We go through the building to try to find more people who are on our list. In time we do, but don’t listen in into anything useful until we hear one conversation in a more secluded area near the top of the building. The people talk about the building’s defenses in a room further up. Based on what they say, we go into a secure area where most of the doors are locked. Bonito uses her lockpicking skills to get us access to the room we need to get to, and we find what we’re looking for. The plans here tell us that another layer of the building is activated from within along with a magical barrier. It’s weird that the plans point to a more fortified structure in the center of this tower. We haven’t seen it, but from what we’re reading, it looks like it’s accessed through a hidden staircase in the water fountain and the key to unlocking it is…
“What do these series of letters mean?” I ask Bonito.
“These stand for a series of chemicals that the water in the fountain must react to. Haha, these chemicals happen to also be found in human semen.”
“I didn’t need to know that. Do you know how to get those chemicals?”
“Yes.”
“Agh!”
As I turn around to Bonito, she stabs her fingers into my sides. What’s strange is that there aren’t any blood or puncture wounds.
“W-what are you doing?”
“I’m making you mine. These claws are infused with special materials that allow me to stab into your soul. You won’t be harmed, of course, but this allows me to force my will onto you.”
“Th-that’s not going to happen!”
Bonito tries forcing herself onto me, but I manage to take the claws out of me and push her away. I then take one of my daggers and put it to her throat.
“Never do that again.”
“Your love for Donna is stronger than I thought. I was sure that this was going to work. It’s going to be hard to come up with something else.”
“Don’t even try because it’s not going to end well for you. Let’s never talk about this again. Find what we need.”
“Yes, sir.”
I stab my dagger into the wall near her ear.
“Don’t joke around with me.”
“Yes, Benedetto.”
That’s better. Bonito buys some things in the nearby stores. We take these items and put them into the fountain, which makes the water explode everything before revealing a hidden staircase in the fountain. Guards immediately surround us along with the people who own this building. We reveal our true identities, which gets them to back down.
“We know your secret. Tell us why you were keeping it hidden,” I tell the owners.
One of them steps forward and explains that, “Our families have been supplying and innovating for humanity’s survival for generations. We need our own place to survive to keep doing so. That’s why we need this place to ourselves.”
“You can do that while also providing shelter for others since you have so much room. We could also use your ‘supplies and innovations’ in other places as well.”
“I’m not sure we can do that. The end times last differing amounts of time and who knows what’s exactly going to happen and who knows the needs of the people who are going to be inside the tower. How about we make a deal? You keep this a secret and we donate more to the Sparrows. Just name the amount and we can go from there.”
“Bonito and my other advisors will name the amount. I want you to shelter more people in this tower of yours and don’t tell me you can’t. I’ve seen the plans and defenses of your tower. You can spare to have more people in here. Refuse and we’ll tell everyone that you’ve been keeping this shelter for yourselves. Don’t you dare try to cheap us or the other people out of a shelter because you think you’re so important. Selfish people typically get what they deserve in the end.”
“…O-okay. What should we tell them instead?”
“Tell them that you were working on improving it and taking out the kinks as you are right now.”
“Alright then. You have a deal.”
That was easier than I expected. It must be the tone in my voice because I’m still mad. Bonito schedules a meeting with the family so they can talk about how many people are going to take shelter in the tower. I don’t think I’ll be going on another solo mission with Bonito. Besides social events and work, I don’t want to talk or be around her because of what she’s attempted today. Even though she’s an extremely helpful advisor and soldier, her hidden side makes me hesitant to trust her.
