Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it” and he did despite the odds, but others in his situations could’ve failed. Dreams like these require unimaginable strength and intelligence to obtain. This is a story of Adam, who has such a dream because he wishes to reunite himself with the most important person in his life. He will have to go through The Passageway of the Seven Deadly Sins to test his dream. The trials can and will push both your mind and body past its limits and ask you the question, “Are you ready to suffer for what you dream of?”
Prologue – A Painful Start
Have you ever had a dream? Most of us do. Some dream small while others dream beyond the logical limits. Adam here is one of those people and others mocked him for it. He dreams of being an archangel of sorts to the people he cares about. He vowed to protect them from anything that would harm them, even the devil himself. The problem was that no one cared about him. His family died after he was born and the other people in his life, well, let’s just say that a speck of dust meant more to them than Adam.
Right around the time Adam was about to take his own life, Eve appeared, seemingly from the highest place in Heaven, and gave Adam a reason to live. These two became as close as you can to a person, without fusing them together, and were very happy as a result. You see, Eve was always doing her best to keep everyone she knew happy, but because of this she never made herself happy and this is where Adam came in. He always reassured her that she was the most important person in his life by being with her that she was the most important person in his life by being with her, having fun conversations, buying things for her and even fighting for her when she needed it. Adam didn’t mind any of it. He enjoyed it as a matter of fact. His dream had come true making him feel like he was on top of the world. Nothing could bring him down, not even a kick to his nuts. This was when everything fell apart. Eve was taken from him from the one thing he couldn’t fight, death itself. Mortals only have a short time to live before they are either taken to Heaven or Hell and the time they spend on earth should not be wasted, but unfortunate events like disease, accidents, or selfish individuals can make these shorts lives even shorter. Adam was devastated and fell headlong back into sadness, but then he remembered a stairway that exists that connects the Heavens to earth.
The only problem is an obstacle called, “The Passageway of the Seven Deadly Sins” exists solely to test whoever dares to attempt to walk up the stairs to Heaven to achieve their dream. Those who fail the test become Dreamless, people whose dreams are clouded by the evil that exists within them. Adam didn’t care because he had a new dream now, to be with the one he loved so much, so he set out on his journey to accomplish his dream. An impossible dream that only incredible strength and a clear mind can achieve.
Chapter 1 – Can there be another?
Adam makes his way to the passageway and sees signs warning those of little wisdom and strength to turn back now or suffer becoming dreamless. Adam acknowledges this and continues into the passage, which leads him to a colorful forest. Reds, blues, pinks, and purples are among the many colors of the flowers and plant life. The water flowed in small creeks that went through the forest and was so clear you could see the fish swimming in it. Birds, mammals and insects lived in harmony with one helping the other to survive. One of them notices him and transforms into a fairy that playfully asks him,
“Who are you, handsome? Hehe.”
“Adam”, he says, “Who are you?”
“Evelyn, follow me, Adam.”
“Where are we going?” he asks.
“To my house. You’ll like it there,” she says with a smile on her face.
Adam curiously follows her and thinks to himself, she seems nice. Maybe she’s one of the people who can prepare me for my journey. They arrive at her house, a large tree with weird fruit hanging on the branches. He enters the tree and looks around the house to see that it is decorated with colorful furniture and paintings.
“Sit down and relax,” Evelyn says.
Adam does as she says and she sits with him on a couch made of flowers. “What are you doing here around these parts?”
“I’m on a journey to meet my beloved Eve who died not too long ago.”
Evelyn smiles and says, “Aww poor Adam,” she gets up and sits on his lap.
“Eve is gone. You have to let her go,” she says while caressing his face. Adam had thought about being without her before, but the idea feels like it burns his very soul.
Evelyn then says, “Stay here with me. I can be your new Eve.”
She starts to kiss Adam, which gets him to think that maybe he should let her go. Evelyn is just as pretty and nice as Eve, but then it dawns on Adam. A flashback appears in his mind to the moment he met Eve. Adam had a knife to his throat in a back alley with trash surrounding him because he felt like this is where he belonged. As Adam was about to cut his throat, Eve saw him, ran towards him and knocked the knife out of his hand.
“Adam,” Eve says as she hugged him, “You’re better than this! You’re not some piece of trash, I can show you how important you really are!”
Flashes of memory remind Adam what he did for Eve and how they both needed each other and this gives Adam the strength to push Evelyn off him and then he says, “I’m sorry, but Eve is the only one for me. No one can replace her.”
He walks out of the house and once he does, his eyes open to what it really is. The colors dry up and turn into disgusting grays and browns along with the creeks that turn blood red with flesh and piranhas eating whatever comes close to it. The weird fruit hanging from the branches are real people with something logged in their throats to keep them hanging. The wildlife turns cannibalistic, eating and mutilating each other seemingly for fun.
“Wow,” Adam thinks to himself, “That escalated way too quickly.”
“Congratulations Adam,” he quickly turns around to see Evelyn who sheds her skin to reveal her true succubus look. “You passed the first test. Most mortals don’t realize how important and unique each of them is, but you do. The next few tests won’t be as easy. Now if you’ll excuse me. I have another customer.”
She snaps her fingers which teleports Adam to the next forest. How convenient for him. It sure saves him a lot of filler walking through the dangerous forest.
Chapter 2 – Starving for a purpose
A new forest presents itself to Adam. This one is greener with trees with bigger trunks and branches bloated to sizes that Adam had never seen before. Even the leaves are bigger which let only small rays of light pass through them. He eventually finds his way to a castle in the middle of the forest with someone who looks like a butler walking out of the castle and towards Adam.
The butler says to him, “Hello sir. Would you like to join us for supper? You look to be absolutely famished.”
Adam thinks about it and realizes that he didn’t bring anything to drink or eat just in case he gets thirsty or hungry along the way. I’m such a dumbass, he thinks to himself, this is probably one of the reasons people don’t like me so he says, “Sure, I’ll join you.”
“Very well then. Follow me,” the butler says as he leads Adam into the castle and as he enters it the gates close behind him.
The inside of the castle is filled with different paintings of angels, demons, and many different forests. There’s a huge living room and library with equally huge doorways as their entrance. Instead of statues in places where you’d think there’d be, there are these bloated round objects with appendages sticking out of them. Some of these things are replaced by several people who move them somewhere unknown while several other people move another in its place. The butler opens a door for Adam that leads to a feast with chef putting food on the table for the people sitting there.
“Come,” the chef says, “Sit down and eat. There’s plenty for everyone!”
Adam sits and starts to eat and the food is delicious! Meats, vegetables, bread, and whatever the purple stuff is, is delicious and there is more coming.
“Everybody ready for seconds?” says the chef.
A thunderous roar of approval rings throughout the hall as seconds came wheeling through the kitchen doors. The food and drinks keep pouring into the room one round after the other. Seconds turn into thirds and thirds into fourths with Adam’s hunger and thirst never seeming to end, but then something starts to bother him.
He stops eating and looks around the dinner table and remembers the kids at the orphanage he was raised at who would continuously eat and become fat blobs. This allows Adam to connect the dots and jump out of the chair and back into the chef who is right behind him and has a smile on his face.
“Congratulations,” he says, “You finally snapped out of your almost uncontrollable hunger. Some mortals think that the more they have the better they are. This applies to both food and your next challenge, but before you go, do you want to know the secret to my cooking?”
Adam nods his head and the chef hands him a pair of glasses to put on. With it, he sees that the food that he was eating was really human flesh and the drinks were blood. Arms, heads, legs, and what looks to be someone’s genitals are among the many things the people are eating. This sure gives the insult “Eat a dick” a literal meaning, Adam thinks to himself.
“Follow me,” the chef says, “your journey continues this way.”
With no other place to go, Adam follows the chef to a door that the chef opens and holds for Adam as he goes through. The chef waves goodbye and wish him luck as he closes the door behind Adam. Now with a full stomach, Adam continues on his journey and who will probably never be hungry again because of what he just witnessed and tasted.
Chapter 3 - All for one and one for one, right?
Adam finds himself in yet another forest. This forest is similar in color to the last, but the branches aren’t as big. They seem to be competing for space or maybe it’s the wind making them look like it. As he makes his way through the forest, he hears footsteps that seem to be getting closer to him. He stops walking and hides behind a tree to be cautious as he looks for the source of the noise. He sees a humanoid figure running towards him. No, it can’t be, he says to himself as he adjusts his eyes to make sure that he wasn’t imagining what he is seeing. The person in the distance looks like Eve!
“Adam!” she calls out.
Overwhelmed with joy, Adam runs over towards what he thinks is Eve without a second thought. They hug each other as Adam starts to cry tears of joy.
“Adam,” she says, “never let me go again.”
“I promise,” he says with a beaming smile on his face and tears of joy in his eyes.
The couple walks through the forest as they catch up on past events. The joyous reunion then ends as tons of people crowd Adam and Eve.
“Eve!” they say. “Help me!” “Come back home!” “Help me feel better!” they cry out.
Eve retreats to the safety of Adam’s arms.
“Please, protect me,” she says.
“Don’t worry. I got this.” Adam holds Eve close and puts a mean look on his face and says, “What do all of you want?”
“We want Eve!” they reply. “We are her family and we want her back home!” “We are her friends and we need her help!”
“Save me, Adam. I don’t want to be with these people,” Eve says.
Adam then gets mad and yells out, “Get away from us! She is mine and mine alone!”
“But we need her too!” they say.
Adam begins to panic as he holds Eve even closer than before. He is stuck in a crowd of people with Eve and can’t find a way out. He begins to use his head to find a way out. Think Adam think! he keeps telling himself, remember what the chef said. “Some mortals think the more they have the better, the better they are. This applies to food and your next challenge” wait a second… “The more they have the better they are” doesn’t that have to do with only material greed? Am I being greedy by not giving Eve to these people? Adam thinks.
He looks around and then asks Eve, “Do you want to help these people?”
“No,” she replies “I just want to be with you.”
Adam then lets Eve go and says, “You aren’t Eve! Eve was the kindest person I’ve ever known and would help anyone who needed it!”
“Very clever,” she says as falls into the crowd and morphs them into a dress she wears that is made of hands that reach out as if begging for help. “I was wondering when you were going to let go. You must’ve really loved this girl called Eve, didn’t you?”
“I do,” he replies.
“Well, it’s a good thing that you’re now one step closer to seeing her now.”
She leads Adam through the forest and says, “As you can see greed can come in many forms whether it’d be over materials, power, or even people.”
Adam looks around and notices that the forest hasn’t changed like the others and asks the woman about it.
“Good observation,” she says, “this forest is so greedy with its nutrients that it refuses to change. I personally like it since it gives it a “we’ve got nothing to hide” look to it you know.” The woman then stops at the edge of the forest and opens a secret portal leading to the next trial.
“Good luck, you’ll need it,” she says followed by a little laugh.
Adam shrugs it off and walks through the portal. He then realizes something. If I keep count of how many trials I’ve done, then I can realize the trap in front of me and avoid it! A clever strategy Adam, but the powers of sin have their way of warping your mind to believe differently because of their influence on your brain. Sorry, you get an A for effort though.
Chapter 4 - (Insert title here)
The setup is all the same to Adam with the same colors, but a different tree design. He is starting to miss the colors, plants, and animals of the first forest. Adam is exhausted and so is the forest or at least it looks like it. The branches are very droopy with the leaves barely hanging onto the branches. He himself feels the same way the trees do, hunching his back as he makes his way through the forest. Adam starts to yawn and become drowsy so he starts to look for a place to rest and conveniently finds a nice pile of leaves to lie down on.
While relaxing on the leaves, someone approaches him and says, “Care for some refreshments sir?” he says.
“Sure, why not,” Adam replies.
As he waits, he realizes that this is probably a trap, but he doesn’t really have the strength to fight it, at least not until the guy comes back with his “refreshments”.
“Here you go sir,” the man gives Adam some bread and wine on a silver platter.
He takes it and quickly eats and drinks the refreshments, but instead of being filled with any ounce of energy, he feels even more tired than before.
Damn, he thinks to himself, should’ve seen that one coming.
He gets up with whatever strength he has and continues to walk through the forest, his body constantly fighting his own will to continue on with it aching and his eyes barely being able to open. Adam then beings to fall every few seconds as his will gives way to his physical body until he can walk no longer.
You know what they say, if you can’t walk, then crawl, he says to himself.
With the last bit of his remaining energy, he crawls his way through the forest as best as he can, but he eventually collapses from exhaustion. He tries to move, but can’t muster the strength to keep going and falls asleep.
Suddenly, he hears a voice, “Grab my hand.”
His eyes open as he sees a hand reaching out to him and he tries to grab it, but a swarm of thorny vines stab him and cover his body while clawing his skin, eyes, and everything else that he can feel. Adam’s body, now recognizing the danger, gives him the adrenaline he needs to move because of the pain. He desperately tries to reach for the voice’s hand while screaming out in blood curling pain and manages to grab it. The hand lifts him out of the thorny vines and onto his feet.
“Good job boy,” the off looking man says.
The man looks like an odd demon-man hybrid that looks like he has a severe back problem, but by now Adam realizes that all the people who oversee the trials are demons.
“You know some people get so tired of what they do they end up giving up on what made them move in the first place. They get so lazy, in fact, that this same laziness makes them start to give up on everything, even life itself. Now I’m sure you’re tired of hearing me talk, I don’t blame you. We are all obligated to give out these life lessons just in case you make it to Heaven. They like their citizens wise and able to give out lessons like these. So enough about that let me lead you to the exit,” he says as he leads Adam by the hand to the next portal to the next trial, but the most important thing on Adam’s mind is how he was still able to see, walk, or feel anything despite the cuts all over his body.
Chapter 5 - Release the anger within
Adam has gotten his wish for a new forest design and this time it looks like Hell. It has rivers of lava and leaves of embers. The once blue sky is replaced with a black sky with no moon in sight. The grass that was once green is black and covered in ash that is falling from the sky. As he carefully makes his way through the forest of flames, Adam wonders what challenge is going to be.
It was going to wrath, he thinks, it has to be.
Each forest represents each sin in some way and this is the least subtle as if they are subtle, to begin with. Adam then sees someone getting beat up by in the distance by three creatures who look like they are made of pure rage.
There’s my next test, he says to himself as he runs over to help. He is thinking that in order to pass this next test, he has to use non-violent means so he won’t fall prey to anger and that strategy works as well as you think it does when trying to help someone who is getting beat up. At first, he tries to talk them out of it, which doesn’t work. He then tries to pull them away from the person being attacked, which gets him punched in the face.
“Just fight them!” the person then fights her way up and gets the creatures off her and reveals herself to be Eve.
Ha! Yet another trick, Adam thinks, this one is going to provoke me to fight.
Eve then slaps him in the face and says, “Wake up Adam! It’s me! Eve!” she then gets punched in the face and gets beat up again.
Adam then begins to think to himself that this has to be the real Eve, so he fights off the three creatures for her and when they are defeated they explode into blood and guts. This causes more to appear from the lava and run towards them to attack them.
Eve gets up and says, “Here they come! Let’s kick their asses together!”
“Yup, this is totally Eve!” Adam thinks to himself with a smile on his face, “She would totally say something like that.”
As they fight off each group of demonic creatures, he begins to realize that he was letting Eve get hurt before he recognized her. He was letting the most important person to him get hurt and disgraced. He is also getting really tired of doing the same thing over and over again of falling into traps and realizing what stupid mistake he made this time. This pushes him over the edge and sends him into a bloody rage. He starts to kill every single enemy with extreme prejudice while letting out a fearsome scream.
Eve grabs him and says, “Adam! Calm down and I’ll take care of the rest!”
Blinded by rage, he lashes out unable to take back control of himself. In a spilt decision, Eve knocks down Adam, keeping him under control while defeating the last of the creatures. After the ash settles, Adam is still somehow consumed by his bloody rage.
Eve kisses Adam in order to wake him, which doesn’t work, so she slaps him and says, “Wake up numbnuts.”
She slaps him again and again and again.
“Whoa, what happened?” Adam says as he comes to, but Eve keeps slapping him again “Ow!” and again “What” and again “was” and again “that” pause…and again “for?”
“For not waking up the first few times. You’re almost at the end. I’ll be waiting,” Eve says, as she is teleported back into the sky by a Heavenly light.
“She came down here for you”, a feminine voice says, “You wouldn’t have passed if it wasn’t for her.”
Adam turns around to see a girl made of flames.
He tells the girl, “I wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for her in the first place.”
The girl then says, “I know you’re tired of hearing all the life lessons we’ve been giving you so I’ll keep it short. You shouldn’t let your anger control the way you act. It can put you in unfavorable situations.”
Adam questions her by saying, “I actually quite like the lessons. Why? You don’t?”
“No,” she says, “because it makes your next challenge easier. Now climb onto this leaf, it’ll take you to the next area.”
A huge flaming leaf lowers itself from the tree.
“But it’s on fire,” Adam says with a worried expression on his face.
“Everything is on fire over here,” she says as she pushes Adam onto the leaf and flings him into the sky with his butt on fire.
Chapter 6 - Life being unfair even at the end
Adam lands on a gigantic lily that extinguishes the fire he had on his butt. This new forest looks more like a swamp. It is full of insects and reptiles that are competing for food while others watch them with evil looks on their faces.
Is this greed? Adam says to himself, I thought I already did this test.
He makes his way through the forest and sees two other people traveling together. They are talking to each other, but Adam can’t make out what they were saying so he gets closer.
“We’re almost there honey”
“I know, but I’m so tired.”
“Here,” the man picks up the woman, “I’ll carry you.”
“I knew I could always count on you. Now come on, let’s finish this together.”
Adam is glad to see someone make it pass this test, but he can’t help but feel jealous of them. He then hears another couple of voices in the background that he goes to investigate.
“It’s a good thing we brought supplies with us to get us out of those sticky situations!”
“Yeah, you’re so smart for thinking to bring them!”
“Aw, thanks.”
A group of friends two males and two females are walking through these trials as if they are on a fun adventure. Yet another noise in the distance catches Adam’s attention, this time it is a family. They look so happy together, talking and playing around as if these trials do nothing to them. These people have a happiness that Adam can never feel since he doesn’t have a family.
He is then overcome with the feeling of jealousy, which then turns into anger. Adam realizes that he has to control his feelings or else he will turn into his back into the way he was before. Come on. Think of something…Yes! he thinks. The fact that Eve helped him out in the last trial and came down from Heaven to do it. This makes Adam calm down and purge his body of both jealousy and anger when he realizes that someone thinks he is worth leaving Heaven for.
A weird looking demon with the same face as the insects appears and flies over to Adam and says, “Congratulations, you have now only one test to go, but I must warn you. It will be the most difficult one you have faced.”
“What’s it like?” Adam asks.
“It’s like sloth for you, but way more painful. Your most beloved cannot save you this time.”
Adam thinks about it and questions the being by saying, “Yeah, how was she able to come and save me?”
“Follow me, I’ll explain along the way,” the insect demon says as he leads Adam along the forest. “You see, all throughout life many challenges will present themselves to you in different forms of the seven deadly sins as represented by these trials. Even though individuals can face these challenges alone, there will come a time when they cannot do it without the help of another and that is why she was allowed to help you. We like to keep these trials as true to reality as possible.”
“What about people who need help all the time?”
“There doesn’t exist any kind of mortal or being who needs constant help unless they are handicapped by some disease or at birth. Who you are referring to are people who can complete the trials by themselves, but do not wish to give their full heart and soul into what they do. These people do not receive help.”
“What about those other people that I saw going through here? Aren’t they cheating?”
“Some of them are. Those who help others get through these trials through legitimate ways that do not use shortcuts through the trials are acceptable. Those who think that they can bend the rules of reality and create shortcuts for themselves are severely punished.”
“Oh ok, I get it now,” Adam says as they reach the next doorway to the final trial.
The being opens the door as Adam walks through with his head held high, as he knows that the end of his journey is within arms reach.
Chapter 7 - You are the only one holding yourself back
The Stairway to Heaven is now in front of Adam that he starts to walk up. As he walks up the stairs, he saw the town he lived in and the people in it. They are going about their daily lives as if they don’t notice a huge staircase in the sky with someone they mocked walking up it. Maybe it’s because they can’t see it from where they are? Adam remembers not being able to see it when he was in town either, so he wonders why it bothers him. It doesn’t matter anyway because he is almost to the top, or is he? Adam has to climb past the clouds and the earth and into space until he finally reaches a door…that leads to more stairs.
This staircase can’t be real, he thought to himself. The structure of it is too simple for this kind of task. Another thing that bothers him is that gravity isn’t affecting him at all. Is he dead? Is he dreaming? Is he somehow ascending into Heaven both body and soul? Before he has time to think about it, he reaches another door that leads to a completely dark hallway with a light at the end. Finally, the end is right in front of him, so he runs towards the door, excited about the future ahead.
Suddenly a male/female voice stops him in his tracks, it says, “You must pass one more test before you enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”
The hallway then gets longer as the voice continues talking, “You must forsake what you are most proud of”.
Adam begins to think what he is most proud of and he can’t think of anything. He isn’t particularly smart, strong, or special at anything. The only thing he can think of is his ability to pass these tests. So…his body is the thing he would have to sacrifice? Nah, they can’t be that cheap, would they?
“Your choice has been made,” it says, “Is your will stronger than your body?”
“Oh crap,” Adam says out loud as he begins to run towards the light.
Suddenly, his right arm falls off and he collapses to the floor and scream because of the immense pain. He starts to bleed out, so in a panic, he gets up and starts to run again to get out as fast as possible. The situation takes another turn for the worst as both his legs fall off and the pain intensifies. As Adam lays down covered in his own blood, he looks up and sees that he is still a little too far away from the light, but he knows he can’t up, so he crawls his way towards the door with each move of his muscle causing him more pain. Adam has to keep his will strong so he tries to think of something to help him out to get the adrenaline going as if it wasn’t already. He tries to remember all the good times he had with Eve. These are the memories that had kept him moving through life and the trials. Even the trials themselves gave him lessons that he could use to get through other challenges that he faced and then he realizes something important. His dream is about to come true, his simple yet impossible dream of being with the most important person in his life. As he felt his last bit of energy fade away from him, he makes his way through the light that envelops him in its brightness. Adam is blinded by it as he felt a stinging feeling where his arm and feet used to be. He looks at them and sees that they are restored with all the cuts and blood gone from his body. Adam then looks forward and sees the Kingdom of Heaven and all its glory.
Chapter 8 - Heaven in odd places
The Kingdom of Heaven is everything that Adam had heard of and then some. Beautiful buildings and structures perfectly complement each other and the lush green landscape. Rivers and waterfalls power angelic technology along with the natural power of the wind creating a cycle of getting energy and giving it back to the source. As he walks through the streets he sees both mortals and angels living in harmony with song and laughter filling the air.
An angel greater than those that Adam saw approaches him and says, “Congratulations Adam, you have passed all the trials. Please, tell me what you dream of.”
Filled with excitement, Adam says, “I dream to be with Eve, the greatest person in my life.”
“Eve is not here,” the angel replies.
Adam feels his heart sink as he questions the angel as to why she isn’t here.
The angel then explains that, “When she had seen how much pain you were in, she tried to interfere with your trial causing her to be sent into Purgatory as a result. I’m sure the demon of jealousy explained it to you. You could pass the last trial without any help, but Eve was so upset by the pain being inflicted on you that she tried her best to get to you despite us reassuring her that you could do it on your own.”
Adam can care less about all this explaining and says, “So you sent her to Purgatory as a punishment?!”
“It’s more like a “time-out” then it is a punishment. Besides, she will only be there for a short time, about fifty mortal years to be exact. Do you wish to join her?”
Adam without a second thought says yes.
“Are you sure? You won’t be able to enjoy the grandness of Heaven even if it is for a short while.”
“I’m sure of it,” Adam replies and before he can blink, the angel snaps his fingers and teleports Adam into Purgatory.
He looks around and sees the black void of Purgatory with mortals walking around it who seem to be hallucinating about the life they spent on earth. Adam runs through Purgatory calling out to Eve until he finally finds her.
“Adam?! What are you doing here?” Eve says, who is surprised to see him.
“I’m here for you Eve. I am like I always will be,” Adam says as they embrace and kiss each other.
Adam has accomplished his dream despite the odds and even though things didn’t turn out the way he expected, he doesn’t care. He doesn’t care about the beauty or riches of Heaven because when he is with Eve, he is in his own Heaven.
Behind the Scenes
- This is the first “book” story I wrote.
- I wrote most of this story on a roughly 12-hour car ride back from Disney land on a little Disney booklet with a pencil.
- I was inspired by the idea of Walt Disney’s vision of making your dreams come true.
- My dad lectured me for about 3 hours about themes and morals I already knew that are in this story when I let him read the book.
- This is probably one of my best stories that work with my crude art style.
- It’s also one of my favorite stories that I wrote for its morals and visuals.
I think I shed a year or two when I read this. (Sigh) bittersweet story which is at the same time inspiring.
