Happiness is Life: Chapter 1 – Truth Hidden in the Dark

Chapter 1 – Truth Hidden in the Dark
Happiness is good. Happiness is the reason we exist. Happiness is what keeps the world spinning. Happiness is love. Happiness is life. Happiness is everything. Happiness is mandatory.
This is what we’re told all throughout our life. Every day we are trained to be happy no matter what. If we fail to be happy, they give us happy gas to help us be happy. We go to a church called the Church of Light that preaches the goodness of light and happiness. It always repeats the same messages about light and happiness and how they should be valued above all things. I don’t know why they keep talking about the light when we’ve never been in darkness. I can hardly tell what’s so bad about the lack of light, but they’re adamant about it.
When we grow up, we take whatever job they give us and tell us to be happy with it. All jobs pay equally, but some get by easier than others. My family isn’t one of the ones that get the higher-paying jobs, but it’s a blessing in disguise since the higher-paying jobs work their employees hard. Some are even worked to the point of going crazy. By the time we grow up, we should have permanent smiles on our faces like our parents. For now, people my age have to wear smiling masks that look kind of creepy in my opinion. My daily routine involves going to a school where they give us both physical and mental tests to see if we think positively and feel positive.
If we don’t meet their criteria of what it is to be positive and happy, then we have to take the happy gas. I haven’t taken any because I’m one of the few that manage to get by. From what I’ve heard, the happy gas makes you feel happy, but it also feels horrible when you take it. You also lose control of yourself and act almost as if you were possessed by someone. This is nothing compared to the people that don’t pass high school or break the laws. These people are taken away never to be seen again. There have been attempts at changing the system to be less restrictive, but the people who tried to change things disappear. There’s only one choice it seems. Just be happy.
While heading home from school, I notice that the streets are particularly empty. This is because there’s supposed to be a celebration of happiness and the city doesn’t want the streets to be dirty. They also want people relaxed so they can party all day. The celebrations of happiness are decent but feel like another test to make sure we’re happy. I know some of the people in my class like them while I’m indifferent to them. The only interesting thing that happens during them are the obstacle courses that people who break the law are forced to go through during the celebration. They are openly made an example of. I wouldn’t watch the painful displays of punishment if it weren’t mandatory.
I’ve seen the streets empty like this before, but what I haven’t seen is a dark alley in person. Light bringers usually come around to lighten up any place in the city that’s dark. It looks like this one wasn’t brightened up. No, wait. The light just went out. Since no one else is around, I might as well see what’s so bad about the darkness. We’re supposed to report things like this; however, this time I won’t because I want to know more.
This isn’t bad. It’s just what I thought it would be like. The darkness can’t hurt me. Sure, it feels a little eerie because it’s hard to see, but nothing is hurting me. Huh? What’s that in the darkness? Is that a smile? I can’t tell if it’s part of a picture on the wall. Pictures all over the city have smiles on them, but I’ve never seen a smile like this. Hold on. What’s that thing above its smile? It looks like a band of thorns. Ah! It’s a person!
“Who are you?” I ask.
“My name is Gioioso. What is yours?”
“Allegro. Who are you, Gioioso and what are you doing here?”
“I am a servant of the Lord who created both the light and the darkness. He who is Lord above all. He who is goodness, love, and truth itself.”
“Do all His servants look like you?”
“No, they don’t. I must apologize for my appearance. Because the authorities learned of my rebellion, they did this to me to try to make me happy like they want. They bombarded my mind with their poison and tortured me in what they thought would help me.”
“That’s terrible. You look like you’ve gone through a lot of suffering.”
“Yes, but it was worth it. I did what I was supposed to. I’m glad I did it and wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
“You’re glad about it?”
“Yes. I’m glad I suffered for something I believe in. Happy even because it proves my devotion.”
“Happy? How could you be happy for suffering?”
“Feeling happy and being happy can be two different things. A soldier who risks his life in war isn’t happy while fighting, but he is happy to risk his life for those he loves.”
“Sure, but are soldiers even real? I thought soldiers and wars were just legends.”
“They are real, and a war is going on as we speak. The war between good and evil.”
“You mean the war between light and dark?”
“There is no war between light and dark because neither are evil. What I mean is there is a war between good and a false version of it that you see in the society you live in. False smiles. False light. False happiness. Surely, you’ve noticed it.”
“I know, but what can we do about it?”
“You follow the Lord. Trust Him.”
“Who is this Lord that you keep talking about? Tell me where He is.”
“He’s all around us. He sees and knows everything.”
“So he’s the God of Light?”
“No, He’s not that false idol. He’s greater than that demon.”
“You’re the closest thing to a demon I’ve seen if you don’t mind me saying.”
“I understand, but you have to trust me.”
“I don’t know. I think I should be going now.”
“Wait. I know I may not appear trustworthy, but I am. Don’t you think that a person who has suffered for so much for what he believes in should be listened to?”
“Maybe it proves you’re crazy.”
“That could be true for someone else. It isn’t for me. You had the right sense to go into the darkness despite being told from birth to never do so. You are being called for something greater. Something right. If you leave now, you may never come back. This might be your only chance to find the truth.”
“I don’t know. It seems right, but it doesn’t feel right.”
“Ask yourself this then. Do your feelings have anything to do whether or not something is true?”
“No, it doesn’t.”
“Then follow me and I will bring you to the truth.”
I wanted this so I might as well see it through to the end. Gioioso goes further into the darkness as I follow him. Everything around me grows darker and darker until I can barely see in front of me. It's like I've entered a black hole that they've talked about in stories that would swallow people up and destroy their existence.
“I can’t see, Gioioso. How much further do we have to go?”
“You must go as far as you need to. Don’t complain. Just keep going until you reach your goal.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You were taught that feeling happy is integral to being happy. You will learn that living a happy life involves sacrifice and pain. Watch your step.”
“Huh? Ah!”
Ack. I fell down a hole I didn't see. Where am I? This looks to be a dark sewer that isn't operable since there isn't any flowing water or waste around here. It barely even smells like what I would expect a sewer to.
“Gioioso? Where am I?”
“You’re in the place where you will find the truth. Persevere and you will find a treasure worth more than anything in the world. You will find the truth.”
“Which way should I go? I can’t see anything.”
“You followed your reason to this place. Keep following it. I will be with you before you know it.”
“I’d like you to be here now to guide me. Gioioso? Gioioso!”
There's no use standing around here. I might as well do as he said and follow my reason. Hopefully, I can find the truth and a way out. This doesn't look like the start of something good.

You've Got Me Waiting - (Song/Poem Attempt #76 from So I Thought)

Don't leave me now

I've been waiting for what's felt like an eternity
You've kept me in Purgatory
And I've been burning
To let you know that my love for you
Is pure and true
And to know if you feel the same too

You've got me waiting to hear you say
"I love you"
I've held onto hope, kept holding on
I lay down my heart and surrender it to you
You've got me on the edge of hope
To know if you love me too

I'll always remember our time together
I pray that it will last forever
And we would live together
Happily ever after
It's been love at first glance
So will you give me a chance?

You've got me waiting to hear you say
"I love you"
I've held onto hope, kept holding on
I lay down my heart and surrender it to you
You've got me on the edge of hope
To know if you love me too

You've got me waiting to hear you say
"I love you"
Please let this be the day

You've got me waiting to hear you say
"I love you"
I've held onto hope, kept holding on
I lay down my heart and surrender it to you
You've got me on the edge of hope
To know if you love me too

You've got me waiting to hear you say
"I love you"
I've held onto hope, kept holding on
I lay down my heart and surrender it to you
You've got me on the edge of hope
To know if you love me too

I need to know if this is the way you feel too
Because I love you

There's an infamous puppet show called Adventures Into the Forbidden that's meant to teach children while pushing the boundary in what is acceptable for them to see and hear. Everyone has something different to say about the show. Even the people who watch it at the same time are conflicted. What's common is that the show speaks to a personal issue of theirs and something dark typically follows.

Adventures Into the Forbidden: Episode 5 – Few Escape

Episode 5 – Few Escape
Families go through rough moments no matter how wealthy or close they may be. Owen’s family is going through one as of late. His parents are having a serious talk while Owen watches TV in his room. While watching his usual shows, a show that he’s never seen on this channel starts to play. A show called Adventures Into the Forbidden. Owen has heard about this show before, but it’s never interested him. He watches it out of curiosity since there’s nothing else on.
A creepy puppet takes the stage with a completely white background. Its eyes, mouth, and nose seem hollow and there’s a swirl on its forehead. It wears a black sweater and has two hand puppets in his hands. One puppet is like him with a black sweater and a smiling face while the other is black with a white sweater and a frowning face. The name that appears above his head is Malek the Puppet Master.
“Hello, boys and girls,” the puppet says in a voice that sounds like it’s a mix of male and female voices, “You’re lucky to see this exclusive episode with me in it. My name is Malek the Puppet Master. The creator of this show and the voice behind every puppet you’ve seen. Since this is a special episode, I’d like to talk about a special topic. For the families who are currently going through hard times, know that everything will be all right in the end. Know that you will always have a friend in me.”
Owen feels strangely targeted by the creepy Malek. He considers changing the channel.
“Don’t change the channel yet. I have more to say to you.”
Convinced that Owen should turn off the show now, he switches the channel only to find Malek on it. He keeps switching the channel only to find Malek on all of them and he says different things on each one.
“You don’t deserve a dysfunctional family.”
“You should find a different family.”
“Abandon that silly faith of yours for a different one.”
“Why suffer for broken people?”
“You’re the master of your life.”
“Do what you want.”
Owen finally turns off the TV to shut up Malek only for the TV to come back on.
“Don’t you think I’m correct? I know you’ve all had thoughts like these. You should follow your feelings and do what you think is right. You have these senses and feelings for a reason. Follow them. Give in.”
The TV then suddenly turns off. Confused but thankful, Owen lies his head down. His parents then come into his room and tell them that everything is going to be all right now that they’ve settled things between them. He peacefully goes to sleep until his TV turns back on by itself. Malek is back on and this time, there’s something different about him.
Owen’s eyes are focused on Malek’s hollow mouth. In it, he sees the many parents who’ve led their children to Hell by their example. Generations and generations of families yelling out for relief fill Owen’s ears and he can’t find a way to shut them out or shut off the TV.
“Owen, you know the right thing to do. Your parents will fight again later and who knows how bad it will get. Do the right thing,” Malek says.
“I know,” Owen says as he takes out his rosary.
Once he starts praying his rosary, Malek writhes in pain. The screams coming from the TV get louder and more horrifying until Owen has finished praying a decade of the rosary. Then there’s silence as the TV turns itself off. Owen calms down and continues to pray. He asks why he had to see and go through all this horror.
In his mind, he hears a woman say, “Just like at Fatima, I showed the children Hell to show them why they should pray and make sacrifices for sinners who have no one that prays or sacrifices for them. Do the same for the sinful families who pass on the weight of their sins to their children who pass their sins to their children and so on.”
The woman’s voice calms down Owen. He goes back to sleep and makes a promise to dedicate his life to help the sinful families on earth while they still have time to change.

The End

Adventures Into the Forbidden: Episode 4 – Only if You Get Caught

Episode 4 – Only if You Get Caught
Being the only child in his family is hard. Milo has to deal with being alone most of the time since his parents are usually at work until six. He is allowed to do anything he wants as long as he doesn’t cause his parents trouble, but with no one to hang out with and nowhere to go, he stays home by himself watching TV. Since nothing appears to be on, he decides to turn the TV on to Adventures Into the Forbidden, a puppet show that he saw his neighbors watching. The neighbors seemed like weird people, especially since they were talking about a puppet that Milo wasn’t seeing, but the show looked interesting,
Milo turns on the show to see the puppet he saw, Pal the Pirate. He sits on a ship docked in a beachside bay with his hands above his head where his name appears. The puppet has one extremely large eye and a pair of large teeth that both appear like they came from an animal or a human. One of his hands has a hook while the other has four sharp-looking fingers.
“Hello, boys and girls! I’m the Pal the Pirate, your best pal and favorite pirate. You may think that a criminal such as myself shouldn’t be out in the public like this, but the thing is that all of my crimes are only between us. The world knows nothing of what I’ve done, and they don’t need to. Did you ever wonder why pirates like me are the main characters in shows for kids? It's because us pirates know when to have fun and when to settle down.”
Pal’s ship starts to set sail and heads out into the sea.
“A little fun never hurt anyone. In fact, it’s historically kept them from going mad and doing worse things. Imagine it. If I wasn’t a pirate, then I wouldn’t be able to take care of myself, my family, and my friends. Everyone indulges in a little “evil” from time to time and that’s okay.”
Pal’s ship crashes through another and all the other ship’s riches land on Pal’s that is unharmed.
“Just like the legendary Robin Hood I steal from the rich and give to the poor. Who cares what I take from those who have plenty? They should be the ones giving instead of me forcing them to. Did you know that rich people typically steal more than the poor to stay rich and get richer?  These are the kinds of thieves that you shouldn’t imitate. You should knock these people down a peg or two, so they’ll come to their senses.”
Pal’s ship opens fire on the port town he was in. The town burns as people scatter to put out the fires.
“Don’t worry about them, kids. Hopefully, this will make them think twice about their actions. If not, then nothing of value was lost.”
The port town sinks into the water below.
“Thank you for listening to this old pirate and I hope to see you all again next time. Maybe I can scavenge for some goodies from this wreck, in the meantime. Hopefully, there was something worth saving on the island and I’m not talking about the people! Haha!”
The show ends as Milo’s parents come home. Milo reflects on what he heard on the show as he eats dinner.
“What’s on your mind, Milo?” Milo’s mom asks.
“Oh, nothing important.”
“Do you want to hear something exciting? Dad and I got a promotion?”
“Oh really?”
“Yup. That means we can get you more things and go to bigger places on our vacations.”
“How did you get your promotion so quickly?”
“Your dad and I know how to pull strings in the company. Other people in the company may have to be moved around, but it’s worth it so we can get by, go on vacations, and buy whatever we want. Don’t you think so?”
Milo remembers what Pal the Pirate said. He thinks it connects to how his parents work and how they take other jobs that people had and worked hard to get. To him, it makes sense that his parents could do whatever they wanted to because of their hard work invalidated the hard work of their coworkers. Inspired by this, he comes up with a plan for the next day at school. His targets are set on a boy who he thinks should be brought down a peg or two.
Raymond is a boy whose brother has recently run away without a trace. He’s hogging all the attention ever since he arrived and the sympathy he’s been getting only adds to it. To bring him down, Milo doesn’t have to do much. During a test, he sees Raymond cheating on a test. Raymond feels Milo’s watching eyes, panics, and exposes his cheat sheet. The teacher sends him to the principal’s office to punish him. At lunch, rumors spread as Raymond’s reputation diminishes.
It then comes out at the end of the day that someone who overheard the principle’s conversation that Raymond admitted to cheating on tests and giving people false advice so that he could remain popular and not be lonely. Milo feels like he had a part in Raymond’s drop in reputation despite not doing anything. He takes note of what Raymond in the hopes of using his tactics for his own use. When Milo gets home, he feels the need to hear what Pal says on the show today, so he turns on the TV to see the show beginning with Pal sailing across the sea. Pal the Pirate has a green iris instead of the brown one he had the last time, but it doesn’t raise any questions in Milo’s mind.
“Hello, boys and girls! I’m glad that you’re back to listen to this scoundrel of the seas. The one and only Pal the Pirate, your best pal and favorite pirate! You must know a lot about those people who don’t deserve what they have. What am I reminding you all of this for? I know for a fact that you’re the smartest of the smart because you’re here listening to me. Well, you should do what I do and take whatever you want from them as long as you don’t get caught like Raymond here.”
Pal’s ship stops at a small island that barely fits a larger boy that looks almost exactly like the Raymond Milo knows. This Raymond has black hair, his hair partially shaved, no eyebrows, bandages on his face, and an eyepatch. He wears a striped black and white shirt with black pants as if he were a prisoner. His hands seem to be bound together with black duct tape; however, the camera shows it. Raymond’s face is terrified with tears running down only one of his eyes.
“This boy is one of our daily viewers. He was recently caught doing the wrong thing. How could you do it, Raymond? You were doing so well. Why couldn’t you be like your brother, Ray?”
“I-I’m sorry! I felt like someone was watching me and I slipped,” Raymond confesses.
“And now you’ve paid the price! Your eye, eyebrows, and patch of hair are doing me nicely. I hope you’ve learned your lesson.”
Pal sails away from a crying Raymond. Milo feels chills after seeing who he thinks might’ve been the Raymond he knew. How did he get on the show and what happened to him?
“That boy got what he deserved. Don’t you worry one bit about that, boys and girls. This is what happens when you go too far with your shenanigans. Remember that the next time to act mischievous. Above all, don’t get caught. You know you went too far when you get caught, so enjoy yourselves as much as you want until that day. Take what is rightfully yours. Take it from those who don’t deserve it. Thank you all for listening to this old pirate again. See ye all again later. Some sooner than later. Hahaha!”
Again inspired by Pal the Pirate, Milo heads out of his house with a large backpack. He puts on a mask that has a similar look and smile to Pal’s face. His parents are going to be home later because of their new job, so he has plenty of time to himself. Milo goes to several houses he’s seen to steal the valuables he wants. He’s passed these houses before on his walks and has admired his neighbor’s possessions for a while. Now, he doesn’t need to be jealous of them anymore as he takes what he wants.
While sneaking through a house, he sees that a family is watching Adventures Into the Forbidden with Pal the Pirate on.
“There you go, boy! That’s how you be a pirate!” Pal says.
Milo feels as if Pal is encouraging him, so he continues with his theft. Once his bag is full, he goes back home, drops off his stuff, then goes back out for more. Again, he finds another family watching Adventures Into the Forbidden with Pal the Pirate.
“Keep going, boy! You’re doing me proud,” Pal says.
This time Milo brings home a big bag of valuables. Milo has robbed dozens of houses blind. Since he’s on a roll, he goes out again to steal from a few more houses. In one of the houses, he tries to take more than he can carry and is seen by someone. He tries to hide but is found again, so he drops what he has and runs out of the house. While heading home, he becomes anxious as he feels as if someone is chasing him. To make sure no one is following him, he heads home and locks all the doors.
As Milo begins to calm down, something knocks him out from behind and kidnaps him. He wakes up to see Pal the Pirate on his face with Pal’s hands cutting at his face with his sharp hand.
“You got caught, boy,” Pal says before Milo is knocked out again.
Milo wakes up sitting a small island on the set of Adventures Into the Forbidden just like Raymond. Milo is also dressed and tied up like Raymond while an eyepatch on his eye that feels numb. Pal’s ship sails to Milo as a camera in the darkness records them. Pal’s one eye is blue now instead of green. The same color as Milo’s.
“This boy is one of our daily viewers. He was caught red handed in his crime and dropped all his valuable loot. How could you do it, Milo? You were doing so well. Why didn’t you stop while you were ahead?”
“I-I was getting ahead of myself. I thought I could do one more run,” Milo answers.
“And now you’ve paid the price! Your eye, eyebrows, and patch of hair are doing me nicely. I hope you’ve learned your lesson.”
Pal sails away as the camera follows him and leaves Milo crying in the dark. Milo is reported missing after his robberies. A week passes until he is found in the garbage can at his house. No one knows how he got there all bruised, scratched, and out of it with a missing eye. All that he kept saying was how sorry he was to a non-existent puppet named Pal the Pirate.

Adventures Into the Forbidden: Episode 3 – Short-Lived Pleasures

Episode 3 – Short-Lived Pleasures
Travis’ family is poor. Despite this, they try to travel and have as much fun as they can. This comes at the cost of having small meals, skipping lunch, and few gifts for special occasions. Travis has to share his possessions, bed, and meals with his brothers and sisters. He understands his situation while wishing for something better at the same time. Part of him wants his parents to work more and have less fun so that they can live more comfortably. He’s conflicted about this thought because his parents would be home less often and they would have less fun family moments, so he tries to appreciate what he has.
At the moment, his parents have gotten a small TV, an upgrade from their older much smaller one that you could barely see what was happening on the screen. The children were given control over the TV as their parents were making manual repairs to the house. They drew straws to decide who had control over what show they were going to watch. Travis wins and goes through the stations until he stumbles across a show called Adventures Into the Forbidden. He’s intrigued by the title and the look of the gray haired puppet on the screen with his exposed teeth and overall creepy appearance.
“Hello, boys and girls! My name is Grady the Gravedigger! Thank you all for coming to listen to me, especially all you first time viewers. As you can see, I am a gravedigger, a dirty job that few grow up wanting to do. You shouldn’t be ashamed if you get a job like this. It’s the people who do the basic jobs in the world that help keep it running. The job may not pay that much, but I still get by. Money isn’t even that valuable if you really think about it. Life is so short, and death is unpredictable.”
Grady starts to walk around while digging graves and filling them.
“When you die, you leave behind everything you had. The only thing you take with you is the consequences of your actions. That is why it is important to live life to the fullest. Have as many good moments in your life as you can while avoiding as much suffering as you can because you only have today as far as you know. On second thought, you might pass away today in a tragic accident that you don’t know is coming. Maybe someone or something is coming after you now and they’re going to be at your doorstep. Any. Second. NOW…”
Grady is silent for a few seconds.
“What? I was just trying to be funny! I hope I didn’t scare any of you and made you laugh instead. I’m sorry to say it, but this is the end of today’s show. I hope you enjoyed it and I hope to see you all again next time! Bye-bye!”
The TV show ends as another kid’s cartoon starts.
“That was a creepy show,” one of Travis’ brother says.
“That was weird,” his sister admits.
“Grady was scary,” another brother notes.
“What he talked about was dark,” another sister tells.
“We loved it!” Travis’ brothers and sisters say.
Even though Travis feels the same, he can’t help but feel like his siblings are overreacting.
“I wish we could watch another.”
“Yeah, another with Grady!”
The TV suddenly switches from the cartoon show to the start of another Adventures Into the Forbidden episode with Grady. Travis looks at the remote and wonders if he hit a button while his siblings are excited to watch another episode.
“Wait, wasn’t another show playing?” Travis asks.
“It doesn’t matter! Our wish was granted!” one of his sisters says.
Unsure of how to explain what happened, Travis watches the show. Grady is standing above graves with coffins in them. This time besides having a shovel, he has an unopened music box in his hand.
“Hello, boys and girls! It’s your old friend Grady the Gravedigger here again to teach you a thing or two about life. We all have to enjoy it to the fullest because no matter what we will all end up like the people in these graves. It’s important to do everything you can to make even the worst situations bearable. When I’m alone and no one else is around, I play my little music box that I found in a lakeside hotel to keep me relaxed.”
Grady opens the music box that reveals a small ballerina that spins as he turns the box on. The box plays a soft and slow melody that chills more than it soothes.
“Ah, this brings back memories of my past. Bad memories. My mom tried to kill me because people in the mirror told her to. After her death, my dad also died of grief and left me by myself. To stay close to them, I decided to work at the grave they’re buried in.”
As Grady recounts his memories, decayed puppet hands with black wires reach out to him from the grave before going back down.
“To cope with my stresses, I’ll drink some adult juice, go to parties with friends, and spend time with some nice women. Your parents will probably know what I’m talking about, but don’t ask them for specifics until you’re older.”
“He’s totally right!” one of Travis’ brothers says.
“We should get them to tell us after they drink their adult juice,” a sister suggests.
“Fun moments are what keep us alive,” Grady continues, “Without those, there really isn’t a point to living. Can you believe that there are people who intentionally suffer for others? It sounds strange, but it’s true. What good can come from it? Whatever you do, don’t suffer for anyone no matter how good it may seem. Instead, try to have fun. Enjoy as many good moments as you can in life even if you have to pull them out of the bad ones. Thank you for listening again, and I hope to see you all next time. Bye-bye!”
The TV show ends, but the sound of the music box can still be heard even with another show starting.
Picking up on it, Travis asks, “Do you still hear the sound of Grady’s music box?”
“Does that mean another episode is going to start?” one of his brothers ask.
Right after Travis’ brother asks, another episode of Adventures Into the Forbidden plays. Travis’ siblings cheer and clap their hands while Travis is completely weirded out.
“Wait, we all saw another show about to play. What’s going on?” Travis points out.
“It doesn’t matter! Just watch the show,” his brother says.
Uneased by what is happening, Travis continues to watch the show against his better judgment. It doesn’t help that sound of the music box plays despite it not even being with Grady on screen. Grady stands above several graves that appear to have been unearthed with the bodies of decaying puppets exposed. All the dead puppets have frozen smiling faces on them that appear to be looking directly at Travis and his siblings.
“Hello, boys and girls! It’s your old friend Grady the Gravedigger here again to teach you a thing or two about life, or rather or lack of it. This may be frightening for younger viewers, but if you’re watching this, you’re already an adult in my opinion. Look at these dead puppets. Do you see how happy they are? They lived happily so they died happily. Just take a real good look at them.”
The camera slowly goes up to the face of a decaying puppet. It appears to be alive and moving. Noises that come from its mouth that sound like it’s screaming or about to scream. The camera quickly goes back to Grady before it gets louder.
“This is how you want to look at your passing, kids. Not like puppets, but happy. Satisfied that you lived life to the fullest. What else could I tell you, smart kids? I can’t tell you to spend your life and have fun. Only you can. Don’t let the world tell you what you can or can’t do. It doesn’t matter if they think you’re doing something wrong. If you can pull good out of it, then it’s good. This may be my last episode, so I sincerely hope that you’ve learned something valuable during your time with me. Thank you for listening again, and I hope to see you all again soon. Bye-bye!”
The show ends in static. Another show doesn’t start this time and the music box has stopped playing on the TV. Instead, the sound of the music box is stuck in the mind of Travis and his siblings who are possessed by its melody. They decide to have the best day ever with their parents and break out the adult juice. Not wanting to upset their kids, the parents indulge in food, drink, and partying. The family parties for the entire day until the parents are knocked out cold from exhaustion and drink. In contrast, the kids are still up and hyper due to the supernatural forces of the music box still powering them.
Knowing that things can only go downhill from here, they decide to end everything. They bury their parents alive along with each other until Travis is the only one left who hasn’t buried himself.
“Nah, I make my life into a never-ending adventure of fun,” he tells himself.
Travis grows up to be a truck driver who does what Grady did in his spare time until the thrill of it all wears thin within a short while. Needing more excitement in life, he tries to be a daredevil and soldier, but these can only thrill him for so long. The music box plays in his head and he remembers that Grady said he could do anything as long as he took some good out of it. With this information, he dabbles into darker thrills.

Adventures Into the Forbidden: Episode 2 – Replaceable

Episode 2 – Replaceable
Most people are more accepting of others nowadays. Parents will tell their children that they can be whatever they want if they only put in the time and effort necessary. Ray is one of those children who was told to be accepting to his adopted brother named Raymond. They’ve been getting together well so far, but there’s something about Raymond that makes Ray feel off. He is great at everything he does and fits in almost too perfectly into the family when he arrived.
Raymond was adopted because he was the only child of a recently deceased friend of the family. Ray has heard of Raymond before, but never thought their first meeting would be under these conditions. Before he came into the family, Ray heard how much of a blessing he was to his mother who relied on him in her last days. Despite her recent passing, Raymond doesn’t appear to be sad or slowed down. Both children and adults admire him for his strength except for Ray who is uneased by it.
Regardless of his feelings, Ray accepts Raymond into the family and just brushes off his feelings as silly feelings though he can’t help but still feel them, especially now. After another day of school, Raymond helps clean up after dinner and spends time with his parents while Ray relaxes by the TV. He feels separated, which is a feeling he tries to get rid of by thinking to himself that he wouldn’t add anything meaningful to the conversation. Right now, he’s going to watch a show he hasn’t heard of until now. It’s called Adventures Into the Forbidden. He heard of it from the others in school and from what he heard, he thought it might be interesting to watch. Even though he thinks the puppet and teaching elements are childish, he wants to hear the deeper lessons and see the darker things that show up in the show for entertainment.
The show starts with the name of the puppet appearing on the screen. Sage the Soldier, a green puppet dressed in a green shirt with a helmet. It has brown patches on its face, shirt, and helmet that are supposed to be dirt. In its right hand is what looks to be a toy version of a Tommy gun.
“Hello, boys and girls! I’m Sage the Soldier,” the puppet says in a cheery girl voice. “For first-time viewers, it must surprise you that I’m a girl.”
The puppet seemed to have read Ray’s mind as he is surprised about exactly what she said.
“Appearances can be deceiving. That is why you shouldn’t let what you have now define who you are. You can be whatever you put your mind to! The army is a male dominated job, so women don’t usually go into it. My parents told me that I should try something else, but I wanted to be a soldier for my country, so that’s what I did. Despite all the challenges and doubts, I became a soldier! Now, don’t think that just because I became a soldier means that you should too if you don’t want to, this isn’t an advertisement for them. I’m just here to give you encouraging advice on doing what you want to!”
Sage moves to a shooting range. She aims her gun at the targets.
“There will always be challenges in life, but you can get through them with the right answer.”
She shoots a target.
“Doubts.”
She shoots another.
“Bullies.”
And another.
“Fear.”
And another.
“Competition.”
This target appeared to have the face of Raymond before being shot.
“Other people will be your biggest obstacle, but always remember that anyone can be whatever they want. Anything at all.”
Sage shoots again only for the bullet to ricochet back to her and tear off her arm to reveal a human finger.
“Sage! Are you okay?” a nearby puppet soldier asks.
“Of course I am! Puppets don’t feel pain, silly!” Both puppets laugh. “That’s it for me, boys and girls. I’ll be back with a new arm next time you see me. Thanks for watching!”
The show ends with Sage and the other puppet waving goodbye. Ray thinks to himself that the show wasn’t too bad and plans on watching it tomorrow. During the next day of school, Ray watches as Raymond gets more attention than him. When Raymond makes a mistake, people laugh with him and gently correct him, but when Ray makes a mistake, he is corrected normally, and no one says anything. Because of all the attention given to Raymond, no one talks to Ray as he is isolated from everyone else; however, Ray chooses not to let his feelings get to him.
“Raymond has had it rough. He deserves some love and attention,” Ray says to himself.
When they get home and eat dinner, Raymond is asked about his day while Ray is barely asked anything.
“It’s okay. He deserves it now,” Ray mutters to himself.
“Hmm? Is something the matter, Ray?” his mother asks.
“Huh? No.”
“Okay. I want you boys to know that both your dad and I have lost our jobs.”
“What?”
“The company thought two other workers were better suited to our position, so they replaced us, but you shouldn’t worry. We still have jobs though they won’t pay as much, which means we won’t be able to give you as much.”
“That’s fine. You’ve given me more than enough by allowing me to be part of your family,” Raymond says.
“Aww. That’s so sweet.”
“Brown noser,” Ray mutters.
Not wanting to hear Raymond talk in fear of hating him, Ray goes to the TV to turn on Adventures Into the Forbidden. He hopes to catch another Sage episode and that’s exactly what appears to happen.
“Hello, boys and girls! My name is Sage the Soldier!” the puppet says in a slightly deeper female voice, “As you might’ve noticed from my voice, I am not the same Sage that you know and love. Unfortunately for her, her injuries were too great, and she died from her wounds. It’s a shame that we don’t have any doctors on this show. There’s no reason to worry though because I’m here! I was inspired by Sage’s lessons and here I am! Even you can be like your heroes if you put your mind to it. You can even be better than them and replace them!”
Ray can’t help but think about his parents getting replaced in their jobs. He remembers them getting gifts and parties for their hard work.
“How easily people are replaced nowadays. Isn’t it amazing that people are becoming who they want to be? It may be at the cost of someone else’s job, but it’s that other person’s fault for not doing enough for their career. It’s just common sense that the people who replace others are better than them at a fundamental level.”
There’s a deafening silence that fills the air as what Sage said sits in Ray’s head.
“Am I saying that I’m better than the original Sage? I am. I’m better than everything she was at. Just watch me shoot.”
Sage shoots all the targets behind her with pinpoint precision.
“Did you see that? I can even shoot without looking.”
Sage shoots a target without looking, but the bullet ricochets and shoots off her head. Ray is shocked by this until he sees her head move its way back to her head.
“Didn’t even feel a thin-”
Her head then falls apart before the TV cuts to static. Ray is shocked by the conclusion until he turns around to see Raymond watching the TV.
“What did you think of that?” Ray asks him.
“I thought it was really dark. I didn’t like how they presented loneliness in such a harsh way,” Raymond says.
“Loneliness?”
“You’re pretty brave to watch a show like this. I could barely handle it.”
“The show wasn’t about loneliness. Sage was talking about people replacing each other because certain people work others than others.”
“What?”
“It-nevermind.”
Not in a mood to argue, Ray walks away to his room to sleep. His mom walks into the room and stands above Ray.
“Are you okay, Ray?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“I don’t think you are. What’s the matter? Does it have something to do with Raymond? You’ve been acting strange ever since he came here.”
“Nothing’s the matter. He’s okay. He’s better than okay. Everyone seems to like him more than me.”
“He does do a lot. He gets good grades, makes lots of friends, and gets people to laugh. Raymond has been through a lot, but he came out stronger because of it. Maybe you should do the same, okay?”
“…okay.”
Ray’s mom kisses Ray on the head before leaving the room. Ray then shoves his head into the pillow and tightly grips it.
“Raymond this. Raymond that. He’s such a great person compared to me. Everyone loves him and he hardly ever makes a mistake. He’s everything that my parents want and more!” Ray screams into his pillow.
After a few hours of steaming with his anger and sadness, Ray goes to sleep. Even in his dreams, he can’t escape Raymond being loved by other people while he is pushed to the side. It doesn’t help that when Ray wakes up he goes through almost exactly what he went through in his dream. His mind races with anger and sadness at being ignored and disregarded in favor of his adoptive brother. When he gets home, he quickly eats his dinner to watch Adventures Into the Forbidden to take his mind off this and maybe learn something good.
“Hello, boys and girls! My name is Sage the Soldier!” the puppet says in a noticeably deeper voice, “I’m sorry to inform you all, but the last Sage died. You can’t heal a shattered head after all! Unlike the other two Sages, I’m a boy. Sage is a unisex name, which means that either a boy or girl could have it.”
Ray isn’t too shocked by seeing another Sage on the show. Instead, he just wants to see what’s going to happen.
“With that out of the way, let’s talk about today’s lesson. As you can see, when one soldier dies, another replaces them. The army doesn’t have any use for a dead soldier so why bother keeping them around. It’s just like useless people in real life. When they’re replaced, what’s the point of keeping them around? What’s the point of having a person around who isn’t as good as the others? They just hurt their families, friends, and everyone around them because they’re weak.”
Targets start popping up behind Sage.
“Weak, weak, weak, weak, weak!” Sage says as he shoots the targets into pieces with his Tommy gun. These targets appear to have Ray’s face on them.
Once things settle down, he turns back to the camera before shooting it.
“Weak.”
Sage slowly approaches the broken camera.
“If you’re weak and aren’t useful to the people around you, you might as well disappear or better yet, leave this life because it would be better if you didn’t exist.”
The show then abruptly ends as things become much clearer to Ray. He shouldn’t hate Raymond. He shouldn’t even try to get to his level. Instead, he should just leave. If his parents are okay with being replaced in their jobs, then Ray is okay with being replaced as their son. Raymond got what he wanted. He did everything he could and became a son to Ray’s parents. He doesn’t look at them as he exits the house while Raymond and his parents are having another fun conversation. While walking his neighborhood’s streets, he feels like he’s doing the right thing.
That is until he thinks he sees a life-sized version of Sage in the darkness. Sage reaches out to him and despite seeing his hands, he feels as if he’s touching him with a longer pair of invisible hands.
“It would be better if you didn’t exist,” Sage says before disappearing.
Feeling colder than ever, Ray keeps walking away from his home. He considers taking his own life as continues further into the dark night.
