Maggots and Ashes (Song/Poem Attempt #91 - From Horror Before Happily Ever After)

Ivy was taking a walk through the woods,

Taking stock of nature’s goods.

She’s a princess whose entire world is her inheritance.

Everything will be hers to use for her benefits.

One day, she hears a voice

That presents her with a choice.

“Leave behind this crown,

Or else your soul will be hell-bound.”

Hearing this voice confuses her.

She asks it, “What are you talking about, sir?

This land is full of beauty and roses

What is this threat that this crown imposes?”

“All who inherit the world, are rewarded with maggots and ashes

Know this or your fate will be tragic.

Those who live eventually die

This is plain to the eyes.

Therefore, look to the Heavens.

This will be your salvation.”

The voice sounds convincing,

So she asks it, “Convince me of the lie that I’ve been living.”

In an instant,

Ivy is teleported to her castle that was far in the distance.

Her castle is made out of a living tree

With people playing and working in glee.

The veil is then lifted

And now everything has shifted.

Every person who was clothed in flowers is naked.

Their bodies filled with holes, with maggots, their skin degraded.

The tree is made of living corpses.

A sight that could least be described as morbid.

The corpses in the trees do their masters bidding

As their skin gets torn and ripping

From the work they do and the mouths they feed.

Their serve to suffer and bleed.

The masters eat and spend.

They celebrate and work without end.

They too will share the same fate

As those they manipulate.

A seed is placed within their servants and children

So that what is obvious is hidden.

Even as the maggots eat their decaying bodies,

They ignore it and continue with their hobbies.

Ivy asks the voice, “Why do they do this?”

And the voice responds, “Because ignorance is bliss.

The happiness and wealth of the world are blinding.

Pleasures and gold are mesmerizing.

They enslave the weak to their will,

But no matter how much they consume, they will never get their fill.”

Seeing the holes and maggots within her,

She wonders why she is special to this divine whisperer.

Knowing her thoughts, the voice responds,

“Everyone should know of the great beyond.

I have talked to everyone here in one way or another.

I do not pick favorites one or the other.”

“What should I do then to fix this horror?

Watching this is no less than torture.”

“First, allow me to cleanse your mind, your ideology

Then you will be able to speak without apology.”

“Do as you will with me.

You, who have allowed me to see.”

Then Ivy was put on the path of salvation

Rather than the path of damnation.

Though she would rise and fall in her quest,

She reasoned and saved without rest.

Ivy served Heaven with passion

Because what is the use of worldly things when all will be nothing more than maggots and ashes.
