Define Horror (short story)

What is horror? Is it something that makes you scared? A monster? An idea? A situation? Many things can be horrifying, but few things are truly scary for various reasons.
The unknown can be very scary. Not knowing what's around the corner or ahead in the future can freeze a person in their place. Certainty creates comfort while the unknown creates a number of things that can go wrong. Everything that you know might not work against the unknown and it might not be able to be fought against. Though it might be exciting, the unknown terrifies many people daily.
Psychological horror is another topic of horror. Things that appear real but aren't. The laws of reality shift, bend and twist. You are at the mercy of things that might know you very well and use that against you. Your mind will bend and you will question the basic fundamentals of reality you once knew. Nothing will truly be known to most while the few take advantage of the rewards between the lines of illusion and truth.
There are some other things that scary people like bodily horror. Who can truly stomach seeing a body bend and twist in unnatural ways while still being able to live? What about seeing gore or the torture of common people? Complete darkness or a slow death can frighten most. Do monsters and killers get beneath your skin? Eternal damnation is another such subject that many horror stories can be written on.
Some of these things exist in the real world. Killers, the unknown, torture, slow deaths, and complete darkness are just a few things. Other horrors like; inevitable death, the suffering of loved ones and innocents, being alone and unloved, the possibility of life having no purpose, and evil people in places of power. Yes, there is much more horror in daily life than there is in fiction, but do you see it? What do you think is the scariest? A fake but entertaining story? Or the inching, inevitable death that awaits you at any moment?
