Sample of: Society's Monsters Prologue + Chapter 1

Prologue - The End of Innocence (and I don’t mean someone’s virginity)
Ok…so how the fuck do I begin this?
“Try telling us some exposition first!” says someone somewhere.
Good idea! My name Michael and I was born in a family that doesn’t care about me. I’m just some tool that they want to use end their life and give them the life they can’t afford. They say I should become a doctor to do that, but I don’t want to do that, I don’t even know what I want to be yet and it doesn’t help that they try to guild me into being a doctor.
“Don’t you want to make sure your family stays alive? Don’t you want to make us happy?” they say all the time in front of everyone.
I respond with silence because I don’t want to say no out loud, but me being quiet gets everyone to hate me because they think I don’t appreciate the things my parents do for me. But what they don’t know is that all the gifts, all the hugs, kisses, and loving words are just things I have to pay them back for.
“I give you all this so you have to give me double it later,” is what they’re really saying to me.
I don’t have any friends to support or pick up for me. Hell, I can’t even do that for myself. Plus, I don’t even think it’s possible to make friends in this world. Damn it, I’ve got to get these depressing thoughts out of my head, otherwise I might try to kill myself again. I’ve actually made two friends or at least I think they are. Their names are Shawn and Michele and their stories are like mine.
“Oh my God! First we hear his back story and now we’re going to hear two more?! Screw this!” someone says as they get up and leave.
Well…I’ll try to keep this short, which is going to be easy since they didn’t give me a lot of details. Michele was sold to some mafia when she was four years old to pay her parent’s debt. She was raped and forced to be a prostitute for those who liked little girls. They would beat her till she bled and if she resisted or didn’t want to do anything the customers wanted, she would be maliciously tortured until she said she wanted to do her “job”. She went through all of this for years, until she snapped when she turned fourteen years old, which is how old all three of us are. It was an event where prostitute was going to be traded and once the thoughts of having to go through more what she was going through, she lost it and killed everyone in the building. She managed to do it by being stealthy and by tricking people with her looks before she killed them. Even after killing everyone there, she went outside to kill a family of three who had a little girl. She told me she did it because she was jealous of their happiness.
Shawn was apparently born on the streets. All he remembers from his childhood, was that he was homeless with no one to care for him besides himself, which forced him to steal and sometimes eat things out of the garbage in order to survive. A gang who needed members eventually picked him up and even though they dragged him to join them, he didn’t mind because at least he had a roof over his head, food to eat, and women to please him. What he liked and eventually became an expert at is using various guns. He liked the way they felt and he practiced using them until he became the gang’s expert gunslinger. Shawn would eventually get out of hand, since he was a shoot first and ask questions later kind of person when it came to dealing with people and because of this the gang he was in tried to kill him, but they failed leading to a massacre of the entire gang.
All three of us have been gathered by the devil himself, Satan, to do his bidding in a group called Society’s Monsters. He found us on different occasions and gave us the opportunity to help ourselves and to change the world. He found Shawn and Michele after their back stories that I just told you, but for me, it was different. Satan had to a couple favors for me before I joined him, favors I have to pay him back for, but at least I actually want to pay him back. He killed my grandmother with cancer and killed three sisters, who I thought could be my friends, with disease carrying insects that killed them slowly, which was my idea that Satan wholeheartedly agreed with.
He brought the other two and myself to this gray, dark basement where he told us to wait here and to get to know each other. He also told us to not worry about the tingly feeling in our backs because that will come into play later. Now, after all of that exposition we can finally begin.
“Finally!” says someone.

=
Chapter 1 - The First One
Satan appears out of the darkness of the room and says, “Hello, children. I trust that you have acquainted yourselves with each other and your weapons.”
Oh yeah I forgot about the training we did, while down here. I should probably talk about that-
            “NOOOOOOOOO!” says someone.
Ok, fine. Satan then continues by saying that.
“You have been gathered here so you can help yourselves and change the world for the better. Your first target is a war veteran whose name is Joseph. He has taken advantage of the deal we had and is now controlling a city his with weapons and influence on the people. Kill him and his followers and return my power back to me. Understand?”
            “Yes, my master,” we say.
“Good. Now show these mortals what true evil is like!”
We leave the gray basement and go to a car with a driver who takes us to the city where our target is located. On the way there, the driver informs us about our target’s followers, their families, where they live, and what they do.
“Wait, I thought we were going straight for the target,” I said.
“No man, we have to know our target’s patterns, wear down their defenses, and when they’re weak, we go in for the kill,” says Shawn.
“And speaking about killing,” says Michele, “We’ll have to teach you how to get used to it. Don’t worry,” she put her hand on my shoulder, “It won’t be too hard.”
“Yeah, especially when the people we kill are just like we are, if not worse, people that don’t deserve their happiness that they didn’t work for. Trust me, we’ll make you into an agent of death in no time,” says Shawn.
The two of them both have weird smiles on their face, as if to be welcoming, but what they said makes them look psychotic. It’s true I’m not used to killing like they are, but it’s something I have to do in order to change the world.
“Ok, I trust you guys,” I say as I shake their hands with a smile on my face as well.
We make it to the city and take our weapons and supplies out of the back of the car. I take my high caliber sniper rife, Michele takes her two pistols, Shawn takes his pump shotgun, and we all receive a wallet with two hundred fifty dollars in them. We also receive a note that says, If you need any additional supplies, then feel free to take them from the city.
“Let’s get started,” Shawn says as he starts walking forward.
“Come on. This will be fun!” says Michele as she takes my hand and leads me along with them.
We follow our driver’s information and go to several houses that belong to our target’s followers and torture them to get the information to bring him down, but really, it is Shawn and Michele who do all of it while I “watch and learn”. Shawn has a brutal style of torture. He’ll cause his victims quick and immense pain with the removal of people’s eyes, teeth, fingers, and toes. He’ll even kill people close to the victim in front of them without a single thought. Michele is different because she takes her time when she tortures her victim. She’ll cut them slowly, carve into certain body parts, and take immense pleasure in sexually molesting them and causing them pain.
“Man she’s into some kinky shit!” says someone.
I know right? But now…it’s my turn to do the dirty work. They’ve been trying to get me to kill and torture people ever since we got here. They say that it’ll help me help myself and that I’m helping to improve the world by doing this. Finally, after all the peer pressure, they get me to do it. The person I’m killing is someone who has an eighteen-year-old daughter, who Michele has already softened up. Both of them are heavily injured and have already given us the information we need. All we need to do now is get rid of the trash. I approach them, grab the man by the collar, and slowly drag the knife across the man’s face making him scream and bleed.
I then drop him and say, “I can’t do it!”
Shawn walks up to me, slaps me in the face then says, “Yes, you can! Maybe you need a little more context to this situation,” he says, “This man has given guns to people so they can murder and control innocent people including children and newborn infants and his daughter, uses her beauty to trick people into thinking this is right.”
“Really?” I say to the man.
“Why? What is so wrong with that? It helps me support my family and friends and keeps us alive,” he says.
Something about what he said makes me violent, so I grab him again and slowly began to dig and cut into his throat.
“Do you think the safety of your loved ones is all that matters? Don’t you think that other people will suffer because of what you do? Don’t you think that they’re trying to accomplish the same goal as you?!”
In my rage, I managed to cut all the way through his neck, which makes his head fall off. I then move on to his daughter who I kill by jamming my knife into her eye.
“Great job Michael! You really know how to kill someone,” says Shawn.
“Well I learned from the best,” I say to them with a smile and blood on my face.
“Oh we’re just grunts like you are, nothing special. But thank you for the compliment,” Michele says while smiling back at me.
“Ok, now we’re ready to face our target,” says Shawn.

I’ve never been so ready to kill in my entire life. It’s exciting knowing what I’ll be doing will change the world and it’s even more exciting knowing that I’m doing it with two people that I can actually call my friends.

*This is probably going to be the next story I'll publish. I'd say it would be out around late May early June.

My "Sword Art Online" / Trapped in a game book, Trapped: Body and Soul Tutorial/Part 1

Tutorial – The Decay Begins
The current year is 2100 and the next step in virtual reality is here with the VR game Rule Humanity Online. No it isn’t a slave simulator or anything like that. It’s a hack and slash RPG where players of different skills and play styles fight to rule over the online world they play in called In Mote Homines Fluctantur or The Floating Mountain of Humanity (FMH). The player or players that make it past all fifteen challenging levels get to rule over these castles where they can do things like change the difficulty of the game, spawn rates of the enemies, and drop rates of items. Now there are limitations such as you can’t make the game too difficult or easy and this applies to drops, spawn rates etc. There are also multiple castles and the higher your castle is on the mountain, the more influence you have on the game like changing the level layouts, switching enemies types, and level gimmicks all of which are balanced but there’s enough change that it forces you to play the level differently. The player(s) at the top are also given a stat and money bonus however if another player(s) overtakes them, they will get half of the previous player’s money and bonuses.
This game started out as a crowd funded project, but was then funded by many international governments after they saw how big the project is and the historical significance it brings as it creates a virtual world that you could live in and move around unlike prior VR games that were just games where you could only stand in place. The alpha of this game was admittedly pretty shitty since you could only use swords and physical weaponry, but you have to start somewhere I guess. So after that, they put in magic, bows, crossbows, and other kinds of special weaponry and classes that you can use in trade of your normal class. Now the game is going to be fully released with extra features not put in the beta versions and about nine hundred and more people are estimated to play it at launch since the tech required to play it is so expensive, though others are expected to join after launch week. You would think more people would be more excited to play as the first one to get to the very top castle gets ten million USD. That’s right ten million dollars! That’s enough to set someone for more than a lifetime!
My name is Kaylen and I’m going to be the first one to beat the game you can bet on that! I’m an eighteen-year old senior high school graduate who’s been playing all kinds of games since I was a kid ranging from shooters, RPGs, sports, and yes even hentai games. You aren’t a truly experienced gamer unless you try those out. I’m pretty good at all of them and despite winning tons of money at gaming tournaments, my family doesn’t believe I can make a living this way, I’ll show them! I’m living comfortably by myself anyways on the money I’ve made…in an apartment, but that’s beside the point! I’ll be living in an actual house with a wife and all in a few short days. I’m going to dedicate my life to this game to reach the top, with breaks of course so I don’t kill myself, but full devotion none the less.
I relax sitting up in my bed, put on my VR headset, turn it on, and say, “Begin!” to enter the game.
Everything around me turns white then a few seconds later the game prompts me to enter my name. I enter Cazzuto Salvatori then the game shows me an intro cutscene explaining the story of the game. Humanity started out on this mountain and couldn’t really get along with each other so God lifted the mountain to the sky and will keep it here until humanity learns to get along with itself. I’m then prompted to choose my primary class. I choose sword and shield, aggressive type, then the Town of Ferrum or the town that specializes in swords and up close and personal classes. You see in this game there are five different towns you can choose as your starting area; Ferrum, Magus for magicians and sorcery, Furcifer for bows, crossbows, and thief/stealth classes, Pugno for martial arts, and finally Clypeus for defensive and support classes. If you chose mage then chose to spawn in the sword city, then you’ll have skills pertaining to both classes, but you won’t have as many mage or sword skills as someone who chose the same class for their city. You can still change and fix your character to your liking later in the game, but choosing a particular city can give you a head start in making that mixed build that you want. It feels like there’s so many options for different playstyles and yet it’s also limited so the devs can balance everything. Sure you can become a mage with martial arts (element bender) that can shoot fire or whatever magic you please out of your hands and feet (probably should make that character later) if you want, but you can’t master everything. From the way it looks, it would probably take years to build a class that can master every single skill and ability from every class. I’m not doubting someone will try, I’m just ruling out that character build in my head.
After I finally finish customizing my character to look like myself and loading into the game, I see the town of Ferrum and all of its medieval glory. Though the town looks somewhat gloomy, the lively people in it, and the shinning sun brightens it up. Man I saw gameplay of this and didn’t think everything would look and feel this real. Without further ado, I go to the training area to test out how to play the game along with other people then go to the quest board, which is packed. After managing to get enough quests, I go out into the field out the city.
Someone puts their hand on my shoulder and says, “Hey, do you mind helping me with my quests?”
The man has crimson red hair, a short beard, brown eyes, and an average body size. He has a big buster sword on his back so he might be compensating for a tiny dick. He’s pretty much your average twenty-year old if I leave out that last detail. He appears to be going for a swordsman who can enchant his weapons.
“I’ve been following you to see what to do…. Sorry if I seem creepy.”
Ok…
I respond to the awkward man by saying, “Naw man it’s cool. I can be creepy to others to. It’s probably why people like us can’t get girlfriends.”
We both laugh at our struggle in the friendzone.
            “So what’s your name? Mine’s Kason543.”
“Cazzuto Salvatori, just call me Cazzuto. Is Kason your real name irl?”
“Yeah. I thought someone would pick up on that. Is Cazzuto your real name?”
“Nope, but since we’re being so formal, it’s Kaylen.”
“Alright. I’ll still call you by your gamer name.”
“Cool. So do you want to do the quests now? I’d really hate to fall behind everyone especially with that reward waiting at the top.”
“Oh shit I totally forgot about that! Let’s hurry up!”
Once we do our quests, grind some enemies, find some secret equipment and items, we go back to town to turn in our quests.
“That was a fun start to the game wouldn’t you say?” I ask Kason.
“Yeah, but I still gotta practice my sword skills.”
“It’s like I told you. You just do the correct movements the game shows you then the system will do the rest.”
“Alright, but I still need practice.”
“How’s this for practice? We’ll be the first to beat the first boss.”
“What? People are still getting used to the game like us so what makes you think we can beat the boss? Were you a beta tester or something?”
“Nah I just watched videos of the alphas and betas. It doesn’t matter if I was in the beta or not since the devs changed a lot in the game.”
“You guys are going for the first boss?” a girl says.
A girl with dual axes and heavy armor approaches us. Boy she’s cute.
            “That’s his idea.”
“It is. You want to come with us cutie?”
“Sure, but don’t call me cutie. I like being called sexy instead.”
“Ok cutie, do you want to join us?”
Despite her somewhat looking baby face, her voice is pretty mature. I’d say she’s around my age and she’s got attitude. I like her already.
“Sure. I’d like to see my name on the Wall of Firsts.”
“What’s that?” Kerano asks.
I tell him, “It’s a wall that shows the players who did things first like first players to beat the boss, first players to find a secret, and first players to beat the game.”
“Ah alright.”
“So now do you feel confident in beating the boss?”
“Uhhh I guess so.”
“Let’s go then before other people get the same idea,” says the girl.
As we go to the boss room, we kill enemies along the way to get some extra XP to level up a bit.
“You’re pretty good with those axes,” I say to her, “You like being aggressive in games?”
            “I like being aggressive everywhere.”
            She winks at me.
“I’d like to fight you to test how good you really are later.”
“And I’ll kick your scrawny ass. Hahahaha!”
“Oooooh hahahaha!”
We finish off the enemies at I stop us at the boss gate.
“So what’s your name cutie?”
“Temere La Cagna. What’s yours? BangedYourMom69?”
“That was actually my name in a different game, but not this time. It’s Cazzuto Salvatori and I see you did the same thing I did with your name.”
“It’s fun putting a language you learned from your family to good use, isn’t it?”
            “It is.”
So she took Italian from her family too? This girl is way too similar to me to be true. She even knew that I used a second language of my family. Is that just a thing that’s commonly known from where she’s from? I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.
“My name is Kerano543 by the way. Do you want to tell us your real name irl too? Cazzuto and I already exchange ours.”
“Maybe if we win after the fight. I’ll even add that fight you want with me afterwards as well.”
“Let’s get this shit started then.”
I open the doors. We go through the boss fog and see the first boss of the game. It’s a giant hollow giant with holes in its face and body. The lore that I read for this boss says that he used to be a human that tried to become big enough to safely fall to the bottom to reach the planet and pull the mountain down to put humanity back on it as well. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for him as there are limits to human strength and him surpassing them turned him into a monster and lead to him being imprisoned here. The area around him is a huge cave with parts that we can run up to, to plunge attack him, but it’s only one spot so we have to work together on this one.
“Maybe we can bring it down by cutting at one of its legs?” Cagna asks.
“That’s a good idea, but I was thinking we could plug attack it from those ledges over there,” I say, “What do you think Kerano?”
As Kerano finishes enchanting his weapon, he says to me, “Temere and I can bring its down by its legs while you go to the top and ready for the attack.”
“Good idea man.”
We enact Kerano’s plan and I watch Cagna and Kerano attack the giant while avoiding its attack with well-timed dodges and even countering the attacks with their own. I’m starting to think that I got the boring part of the plan. The giant goes down by the time I get to the top and I immediately jump down and plug my sword into its spine, finishing off the boss’s HP. The body disappears, we get XP and money rewards, and displays in big golden words ‘VICTORY’.
“That was great!” Kerano says.
“See? Told you we could do it,” I say.
“With my help of course,” Cagna says.
“It’s true Cazzuto. I don’t think we would’ve won without her.”
“I admit it, but we’ll see how good you really are when you 1 v 1 me.”
“Yeah we’ll – Oh I almost forgot!”
She poses at a light in the cave. What is she…Oh that’s right! I do a little funny pose in front of the light.
“What the hell are you guys-”
Kerano looks in time for the picture which is taken after every first moment. Something we probably should’ve told him about so I guess now’s a good time.
“No it’s not!” he yells at me, “Everyone’s going to see me with that dumbass expression on my face and it’s always going to be there!”
“And that makes it a special photo!” I say to try lessen his embarrassment.
“Ugghhhhhh. Fine.”
We make it back to town and set up our dual. For players to fight each other, they must both agree to the fight otherwise players cannot harm one another. During the fight, an invisible barrier forms around the players so no one can run from the fight. The barrier also keeps the players not too far away from each other. There are also some PVP locations in the world for bigger groups so any number of players can fight each other at one time. Cagna and I decide to have our battle in town to be show offs and for the loser’s humiliation. The countdown for the fight begins and a crowd gathers around us.
“Don’t cry when I knock you on your ass,” she says.
“Same to you cutie.”
The countdown reaches zero and she charges at me. How predictable. I counter her attack with my shield and parry her resulting in two major slashes to her health bringing it down to near half. I manage to take some damage myself because of her piercing skill that comes with her being an aggressive class of warrior. She then almost instantly goes back on the attack with a dual heavy hit with both of her axes that pushes me back a fair distance. Our health is now pretty much the same.
“You were right about you always being aggressive…I like it,” I say.
“Ha!”
She comes at me again and I use my shield skill which makes it like a brick wall to lower or even leveled attacks, lessens piercing damage, and makes her attack bounce off it. I move with a straight stab. She tries to use the mid-air back step, but I manage to hit her which leaves her with only about one more hit left to her HP.
“Damn!” she says.
Cagna recovers and comes at me again and keeps hitting my shield with a series of fast and hard hitting slashes until the skill reaches the maximum amount of damage it can take. She then backs up and charges at me for one last hard hitting attack that may end the duel. I back up and press a small button on my shield.
“Watch this Kerano,” I say to him.
The shield’s spiral turns and stops Cagna’s assault as it makes her dizzy. Kerano and I found this shield in a secret area in the fields. It can make an enemy or a player dizzy for a few seconds and it has good parrying abilities. I might as well finish her off now that I have the chance, so I go for a lunge attack skill. I pull my arm back and lunge forward. The game propels me forward and my sword goes through her chest and impales her to the ground. ‘VICTORY to CAZZUTO SALVATORI’ is displayed above us and the crowd cheers for my victory. I give Cagna a helping hand up and she accepts it.
“Wow. If you could feel pain, that would’ve really hurt,” says Kerano.
“You can feel pain in the game,” I say to him.
“You can? So I guess it wasn’t my imagination when I took small amounts of damage.”
“You can adjust the levels of pain in the menu. Just think about which option to want and a slider will appear to adjust how much pain you want to feel ranging from real to nothing.”
“I’ve got mine close to real,” says Cagna, “I’m not a bitch.”
“Contrary to your name. Speaking about that, you told us you’d tell us your real name irl,” I say.
“It’s Angel.”
“Angel huh? My name is Kerano,” says Kerano.
“Mine’s Kaylen.”
“You got a cute name you know?” says Kerano.
“I don’t do pretty. So did you adjust your pain levels?” Angel says.
“I think it’s good.”
“Let’s test it out then.”
Angel sets up a one hit duel with Kerano and she kicks him in the nuts. Unfortunately, Kerano set his pain levels to what Angel said so he’s in bad pain right now. After he gets up, we go to look at the Wall of Firsts to see our names, sell extra equipment we found, buy better ones, and go to the town square to relax.
“That was a fun few hours of the game,” I say.
“It was more than I expected,” says Angel.
“Same here,” Kerano says as he goes through the menus to get used to using the thought controlled and the hands on one.
“This is definitely going to be one of the best games of all time. Welp, I’m going to take a break for now. It’s time for dinner. I’ll be back in a few.”
The two say bye to me, but then something strange happens…the logout feature isn’t working. I try to manual version and it still doesn’t work.
“What’s wrong? Don’t know how to use a menu?” asks Angel.
“No I do. See if you can logout, I can’t.”
Both of them try to logout and can’t manage to.
“What the hell is going on?” Angel asks.
“I don’t know. I swear this button was lit up a few minutes ago,” says Kerano.
Everyone around us try to log out as well and can’t which starts a panic in the city. I can even hear screams of panic and fear coming from the other nearby town. The sky turns a dark purple and red color before several figures in cloaks come down to each town.
One that hovers above our town says, “Do not panic as this is now your reality.”
What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Are we really trapped here?
“If you want to escape and know the real why you are trapped here, you must reach the top of the mountain otherwise your body will die of thirst in three to five days a little bit longer if you have loved ones nearby.”
Well I’m fucked.
“The people on the outside are told that the first people here are going to speed run the game to reach the humongous prize at the top and because of that hundreds and even thousands of people will be here shortly to give you support. However, beating this game won’t be easy as you only have three lives. Lose them and you will be put into a permanent coma unless someone frees you from the top.”
At least we won’t die, but then again, a permanent coma sounds worse than death. Escape one prison just to be put into another you can’t escape from.
“Be sure to use each other and extras hidden throughout the land to survive. Do be sure to inform new players about the situation. Ut felix sit in te”
The figures disappear and the sky goes back to the what it was before, but the sunset as been replaced with the night sky.
“May luck be with you?” Kerano says.
“You know what that meant?” I ask.
“Yes, it’s Latin.”
Angel runs away to the fields.
“Angel, wait!” I say as I grab her arm.
“Let me go! I’ve got to finish this before I die!”
She must be living by herself like me.
“I know, but we should go with you. It would be easier with a group don’t you think? Even the figures said it.”
“…Ok.”
“Besides what idiot goes into a game like this alone? Besides you.”
“Kaylen!” Kerano yells at my attempt to lighten the mood, “Don’t say th-”
“No Kerano, I understand what Kaylen was trying to do however mean it was.”
“I apologize anyways since I don’t know how to lighten the mood in any other different way.”
Angel laughs a bit.
“I guess you’re the idiot then if you know so little.”
“Hey I don’t claim to be a genius. We should probably get going.”

They both agree and we head off to a race against the clock in this fantasy world turned horror. Man, someone should hire me to write headlines!

Sample of: A Glimpse of Light: Psychological Survival Story 1

Story 1 – Guilty
Walter is a teacher who has killed people before, kids in particular. He thought that this was the best way to avenge the kids that killed themselves. Walter taught at a local high school and was the history teacher who was very popular with the kids. Since the teen suicide rate in the country was increasing, Walter gave extra support to his students, especially the quiet ones and even though he did make them all feel better and outgoing, a suicide still happened in the school. The student that killed themself wasn’t one of Walter’s students, but he still felt guilty because he didn’t pay as much attention to other students. Walter automatically blamed the kids that picked on the others. He followed the bullies after school and killed them in a secluded area then threw the bodies in a nearby river that leads to the ocean. No one found the bodies of the kids and couldn’t even find clues to their current location or even where they disappeared from, so the detectives working on the case have long since given up. It’s been a few months since then and Walter has forgotten about what he’s done, but part of him hasn’t.
Summer vacation started about a week ago and Walter is working at the shore. He serves ice cream, pizza, and other foods and sweets at his own restaurant, which is one of the most popular places on the pier. Walter takes a lunch break and overhears a conversation take place between two people who also own restaurants on the pier.
“Rumors are starting to spread about people being eaten by zombies,” says one of them.
Walter joins in the conversation by asking, “Where did you hear that from?”
“From one of my buddies from further down the pier. Did you hear anything Walter?” says the other guy.
“No, but something does feel off about today. I mean the air smells different then it usually does.”
“I was thinking that too, but I didn’t really hear anyone else talk about it, so I kept it to myself.”
Screams can be heard in the distance approaching them. It takes the three a second to pick up on it, but once they look to see where the screams are coming from, they see a crowd of people running from what looks to be a horde of zombies.
“Oh shit,” one guy says as he watches the chaos in complete shock.
The other person has long since run away like an Olympian runner. Walter sprints back to his restaurant and warns everyone about what is currently happening. Some people go outside to see if what Walter said is true and others stay to finish their meal before checking. Walter goes back outside to see the rapidly growing and approaching zombie horde and the people running away from the. Walter runs away from the shore and about ten blocks after that, he finds a connivance store being barricaded by its owner.
“Hey!” the man says, “Help me barricade my store! You can stay here for shelter if you’d like!”
Walter helps the man barricade his store with metal tables, wooden planks, and other nearby objects. The two then go inside the store before the zombie hordes reach their area.
“Thanks,” says the man, “What’s your name?”
            “Walter, what’s yours?”
            “Chris, where are you from?”
“From out of town. I work as a history teacher, but I own a restaurant at the pier. What about you?”
“Oh, I’m just your normal connivance store owner. Nothing special.”
Small footsteps are heard from the back of the store, causing Walter to heighten his guard.
“Calm down man. Kids, come on out and introduce yourselves to Walter.”
Three kids walk out from the back of the store. There are two girls; one has tan skin while the other is white. There’s also one boy with tan skin like the young girl’s.
“Hi…I’m Clementine,” says the girl who is wearing a little red dress.
“My name’s Crane,” says the boy with shorts and a tank top on.
“And my name’s Sherry,” says the girl who is wearing a school like uniform.
“Well I’m Walter and it’s very nice to meet you. Now since we’re going to be here for a while, you wanna play some games?”
            “Yeah!” the kids say.
“There’s a lot of games in the back of the store,” says Crane, “Can we play one of those?”
“Well…they’re suppose to be for sale so wouldn’t we be stealing-”
Chris interrupts Walter by saying, “It’s fine. You can have anything in the store for free. This is a zombie apocalypse after all and I don’t think money will help me at all.”
“Yay!” the kids say as they instantly go for the sugars and snacks.
“Jeez these kids don’t really care that a zombie apocalypse is happening,” Chris says to Walter as they look for a game to play.
“It’s all these movies, comics, and games that get them used to it.
“But as soon as they experience it for real, they’ll lose some of that courage.”
“True, but it’d be worse if they didn’t know what was happening. Fear of the unknown is one of mankind’s biggest fears.”
“You’re right, you’re right. Hey, you wanna play blackjack?” Chris says as he holds a pack of cards.
“Sure though I must warn you that I have really good luck when it comes to cards.”
They play cards and board games with the kids for a while with Walter winning most of the games, only letting the kids win once in a while. Chris doesn’t win at all, but he doesn’t show the defeat he feels to the kids, but Walter sees it plain as day. Later in the night, Chris talks to Walter about their situation in the back outside of the store.
“We should take care of the zombies outside. I’m afraid that the kids might go outside and run into one of them or the smell of them might make them sick.”
“I get what you’re saying. I’ll get rid of them while you keep the kids safe. I don’t want anything happening to the both of us and the kids being alone without any adults.”
            “Fine, but take this.”
Chris gives Walter a survival knife.
            “Where did you get this?”
“Some guy tried robbing my store a while back and lets just keep the story short and say that he failed so I took his knife as a prize.”
“Wow you’re tougher than you seem! You sure we shouldn’t trade places?”
“Nah I’m not as good as I was before and you’re better built than I am.”
            “Alright then.”
Chris walks back into the store as Walter sneaks to the front of the store and starts to get rid of the zombies. Since they’re slow and their flesh is soft and decaying, they’re easy to kill as Walter stabs their heads and slashes through their throats, decapitating them with his knife. After killing the eight or so zombies outside the store, Walter catches his breath then cleans up the area by hiding the bodies of the zombies in the trash bins of the nearby houses so the kids don’t see or smell the stench of the corpses. Walter then goes back inside the store much to the relief of Chris and the kids.
“Wow you’re so cool Mr. Walter!” says Crane.
“But you really smell!” says Clementine.
They all share a laugh together as they celebrate Walter’s job well done. On the next day Chris talks to Walter about another important issue.
“I know we have an entire store full of food and stuff, but we’re eventually going to run out, so we need to expand our territory before then you know?”
“I know, but there’s too many zombies around here and I can’t do this alone.”
“Yes, there’s a lot of them and they’re all spread out. But all we have to do is get most of them away from here and we can clean up the stragglers.”
“That actually sounds like a great idea, but how do we pull it off?”
“I got a stash of fireworks that I sell and use for New Years. How about that?”
            “Sounds great. Let’s do it!”
The two shake hands and get to work. They put the fireworks in a location far away from them, but not too far so the zombies can still hear them and they set off the fireworks. The horde of zombies starts to move to the location of the fireworks as Chris and Walter go back to the store via a longer, but not zombie infested way. They rest up a bit before taking care of the remaining zombies and after that they go to Walter’s restaurant to celebrate.
“Here we go!” Walter says as he brings out his specialty made pancakes with syrup, “Let’s eat!”
Everyone starts to eat Walter’s pancakes.
“Wow! This is delicious!” says Clementine.
“You gotta give us more Mr. Walter,” says Crane.
“More please!” says Sherry with her plate already clean.
“Haha! I’ve always heard about your restaurant Walter, but I’ve never actually gone to it. I now know that was a mistake and I should’ve visited here more often!” says Chris.
The weeks go on and on as the group survives the zombie apocalypse with travelers taking shelter in the area. Walter and Chris make agreements with these people so they can all live peacefully and hopefully make a community. After a routine killing of zombies around the area, Walter stands on the pier and looks out into the ocean.
He sighs and thinks to himself, Man…the sun doesn’t shine like it used to since the apocalypse started, but at least we’re safe.
He then notices three bleeding corpses in the water, three corpses he now remembers. They stand on the water laugh at Walter as they walk towards him while staining the ocean with their blood. Stunned and disturbed by what he is seeing, Walter stands in place, motionless, until Chris walks up to him and puts his hand on Walter’s shoulder.
“You ok man? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“Yeah I’m fine I…I just need to lay down,” Walter says while rubbing his eyes.
“Get some rest then, you deserve it. I mean you should leave some of the zombie killing to some of the newer people so they can get some experience instead of you doing most of the work.”
“I know, I know. Maybe next time I’ll let them do it.”
“Good,” Chris pats Walter’s shoulder, “Now get some rest.”
Walter walks away and into the convenience store to find a snack and something to drink before going to sleep. He finds what he wants and as soon as he opens the door to leave, he sees the previous three corpses he saw before standing in front of him still laughing. He quickly backs away and in the blink of an eye, the three corpses he just saw become Clementine, Crane, and Sherry.
“What’s the matter Mr. Walter?” says Crane.
Walter sighs as he calms down then says, “Nothing, I’m just a little tired, so don’t worry about me. Just go back to whatever you were doing.”
They look at him for a second with concern on their face then Sherry speaks for them by saying, “Ok.”
The kids go into the store looking for a game to play while Walter walks into a nearby house to sleep in. He eats and drinks the things he got from the store then lays on a bed upstairs in the house and slowly falls asleep. As he sleeps, he feels eyes watching him and wakes up to see the three corpses from before, standing above him with smiles on their faces. He jumps back and falls off the bed and down a hole then lands in a school. The school is dark with only red tinted lights to illuminate the void. There are desks stacked unnaturally on top of each other and bodies hung on the ceiling by nooses.
“Do you really think you can escape guilt?” says a dark child like voice.
“Wha-What are you talking about? Who are you?!” says Walter.
“We didn’t forget. Guilt punishes the guilty obviously. You can’t run from it. You can’t hide from it. You can only accept it.”
The three corpses appear in front of Walter, sitting on the desks with wide smiles.
“I killed you bastard children! Why are you alive?”
“Bastard children? Are we really what you say we are?”
“You made those kids, your friends! Kill themselves.”
“Did we really?”
“You picked on them all the time and were rough on them!”
“But that’s how best friends act with each other and don’t tell us that we’re wrong. You act the same way with yours.”
“…Shut up.”
“You killed three innocent kids and you know it.”
“Shut up!”
Walter lunges at them and slices them with his knife.
Despite being cut open, the three corpses are unaffected and they say, “And now you’ve killed three more.”

Walter snaps out of the hallucination and sees that he’s killed Clementine, Crane, and Sherry. He falls to his knees as he cries for seemingly hours. The dead bodies of the kids get up, zombified, and limp towards Walter. He notices this, but is too racked with guilt and shame to do anything, so he accepts his punishment and gets eaten by the three kids.

Sample of: Dreamless Prologue + Chapters 1 and 2

Prologue – A Painful Start
Have you ever had a dream? Most of us do. Some dream small while others dream beyond the logical limits. Adam here is one of those people and others mocked him for it. He dreams of being an archangel of sorts to the people he cares about. He vowed to protect them from anything that would harm them, even the devil himself. The problem was that no one cared about him. His family died after he was born and the other people in his life, well, let’s just say that a speck of dust meant more to them than Adam.
Right around the time Adam was about to take his own life, Eve appeared, seemingly from the highest place in Heaven, and gave Adam a reason to live. These two became as close as you can to a person, without fusing them together, and were very happy as a result. You see, Eve was always doing her best to keep everyone she knew happy, but because of this she never made herself happy and this is where Adam came in. He always reassured her that she was the most important person in his life by being with her that she was the most important person in his life by being with her, having fun conversations, buying things for her and even fighting for her when she needed it. Adam didn’t mind any of it.  He enjoyed it as a matter of fact. His dream had come true making him feel like he was on top of the world. Nothing could bring him down, not even a kick to his nuts. This was when everything fell apart. Eve was taken from him from the one thing he couldn’t fight, death itself. Mortals only have a short time to live before they are either taken to Heaven or Hell and the time they spend on earth should not be wasted, but unfortunate events like disease, accidents, or selfish individuals can make these shorts lives even shorter. Adam was devastated and fell head long back into sadness, but then he remembered a stairway that exists that connects the Heavens to earth. The only problem is an obstacle called, “The Passageway of the Seven Deadly Sins” exists solely to test whoever dares to attempt to walk up the stairs to Heaven to achieve their dream. Those who fail the test become Dreamless, people whose dreams are clouded by the evil that exists within them and must wander the forest for an eternity until or even if they fix themselves. Adam doesn’t care because he has a new dream now, to be with the one he loves so much, so he set out on his journey to accomplish his dream. An impossible dream that only someone with incredible strength and a clear mind can achieve.

Chapter 1 – Can there be another?
Adam makes his way to the passageway and sees signs warning those of little wisdom and strength to turn back now or suffer becoming dreamless. Adam acknowledges this and continues into the passage, which leads him to a colorful forest. Reds, blues, pinks, and purples are among the many colors of the flowers and plant life. The water flows in small creeks that go through the forest and is so clear you can see the fish swimming in it. Birds, mammals and insects live in harmony with one helping the other to survive.
One of them notices him and transforms into a fairy that playfully asks him, “Who are you, handsome? Hehe.”
“Adam”, he says, “Who are you?”
“Evelyn, follow me Adam.”
“Were are we going?”
“To my house. You’ll like it there,” she says with a smile on her face.
Adam curiously follows her and thinks to himself, she seems nice. Maybe she’s one of the people who can prepare me for my journey. They arrive at her house, a large tree with weird fruit hanging on the branches. He enters the tree and looks around the house to see that it is decorated with colorful furniture and paintings.
“Sit down and relax,” Evelyn says.
Adam does as she says and she sits with him on a couch made of flowers. “What are you doing here around these parts?”
“I’m on a journey to meet my beloved Eve who died not too long ago.”
Evelyn smiles and says, “Aww poor Adam.”
She gets up and sits on his lap.
“Eve is gone. You have to let her go”, she says while caressing his face.
Adam had thought about being without her before, but the idea feels like it can burn his very soul.
Evelyn then says, “Stay here with me. I can be your new Eve.”
She starts to kiss Adam, which gets him to think that maybe he should let her go. Evelyn is just as pretty and nice as Eve, but then it dawns on Adam.
A flashback appears in his mind to the moment he met Eve. Adam had a knife to his throat in a back alley with trash surrounding him because he felt like this is where he belonged. As Adam was about to cut his throat, Eve saw him, ran towards him and knocked the knife out of his hand.
“Adam!” Eve says as she hugs him, “You’re better than this! You’re not some piece of trash, I can show you how important you really are.”
Flashes of memory remind Adam what he did for Eve and how they both needed each other and this gives Adam the strength to push Evelyn off him and then he says, “I’m sorry, but Eve is the only one for me. No one can replace her.”
He walks out of the house and once he does, his eyes open to what it really is. The colors dry up and turn into disgusting grays and browns along with the creeks that turn blood red with flesh and piranhas eating whatever come close to it. The weird fruit hanging from the branches are really people with something logged in their throats to keep them hanging. The wildlife turns cannibalistic, eating and mutilating each other seemingly for fun.
“Wow,” Adam thinks to himself, “That escalated way too quickly.”
“Congratulations Adam,” he quickly turns around to see Evelyn who sheds her skin to reveal her true succubus look. “You passed the first test. Most mortals don’t realize how important and unique each of them are, but you do. The next few tests won’t be as easy. Now if you’ll excuse me. I have another customer.”
She snaps her fingers which teleports Adam to the next forest. How convenient for him. It sure saves him a lot of filler walking through the dangerous forest.

Chapter 2 – Starving for a purpose
A new forest presents itself to Adam. This one is greener with trees with bigger trunks and branches bloated to sizes that Adam had never seen before. Even the leaves are bigger which let only small rays of light pass through them. He eventually finds his way to a castle in the middle of the forest with someone who looks like a butler walking out of the castle and towards Adam.
The butler says to him, “Hello sir. Would you like to join us for supper? You seem to be absolutely famished.”
Adam thinks about it and realizes that he didn’t bring anything to drink or eat just in case he gets thirsty or hungry along the way.
‘I’m such a dumbass,’ he thinks to himself, ‘This is probably one of the reasons people don’t like me.’ So he says to the butler, “Sure, I’ll join you.”
“Very well then. Follow me.”
The butler leads Adam into the castle and as he enters it the gates close behind him. The inside of the castle is filled with different paintings of angels, demons, and many different forests. There’s a huge living room and library with equally huge doorways as their entrance. Instead of statues in places where you’d think there’d be, there are these bloated round objects with appendages sticking out of them. Some of these things are replaced by several people who move them somewhere unknown while several other people move another in its place. The butler opens a door for Adam that leads to a feast with chef putting food on the table for the people sitting there.
“Come,” the chef says, “Sit down and eat. There’s plenty for everyone!”
Adam sits and starts to eat and the food is delicious! Meats, vegetables, bread, and whatever the purple stuff is, is delicious and there is more coming.
“Everybody ready for seconds?” says the chef.
A thunderous roar of approval rings throughout the hall as seconds came wheeling through the kitchen doors. The food and drinks keep pouring into the room one round after the other. Seconds turn into thirds and thirds into fourths with Adam’s hunger and thirst never seeming to end, but then something starts to bother him. He stops eating and looks around the dinner table and remembers the kids at the orphanage he was raised at who would continuously eat and become fat blobs. This allows Adam to connect the dots and jump out of the chair and back into the chef who is right behind him and has a smile on his face.
“Congratulations,” he says, “You finally snapped out of your almost uncontrollable hunger. Some mortals think that the more they have the better that are. This applies to both food and your next challenge, but before you go, do you want to know the secret to my cooking?”
Adam nods his head and the chef hands him a pair of glasses to put on. With it, he sees that the food that he was eating was human flesh and the drinks were blood. Arms, heads, legs, and what looks to be someone’s genitals are among the many things the people are eating. This sure gives the insult “Eat a dick” a literal meaning, Adam thinks to himself.
“Follow me,” the chef says, “your journey continues this way.”

With no other place to go, Adam follows the chef to a door that the chef opens and holds for Adam as he goes through. The chef waves goodbye and wishes him luck as he closes the door behind Adam. Now with a full stomach, Adam continues on his journey and who will probably never be hungry again because of what he just witnessed and tasted.
