The Spark of World Burning Love: Chapter 3 – Remnants of the Past

Chapter 3 – Remnants of the Past
While making small talk as they continue traveling the ashen wasteland, Lucus feels as if he should bring up what Silva said before, but in a way that isn’t direct.
“How was your life before you joined the order?” Lucus asks.
“Harsh. My parents worked with them and expected me to be one and when I did, they didn’t let up. They always kept pushing me to work harder while never acknowledging anything I did as an accomplishment. Everything was already done by other people and in a better way than I did., so I always had to do more and try to be more than everyone else.”
“That’s terrible. A parent should never do that to their child.”
“Other people had the same problem, so I had people to relate to even if they didn’t really care about me. Everyone had their sob story about how they got to be in such a prestigious order. We didn’t even do much because there weren’t many people who wanted to fight against us. There were very few who wanted humanity to be enslaved by their sins, but better to be safe than sorry.”
“Did you know the two lovers who you protected?”
“I got to know them well. A bit too well. The girl was pretty, but she had an attitude and an ego for being chosen to help save humanity from its sins. The boy. Whew was he a looker. Definitely the best looking guy I’ve ever seen. He was also the nicest. We were close-friends and were together even when we were supposed to be separate.”
“Sounds like you wanted to be in his girl’s position.”
“Yes-I mean kind of. We were just friends.”
“Close friends.”
“No, I meant just friends. Can we not talk about it anymore? It’s making me sad remember those few good memories”
“Alright, I understand. Do you know why their sacrifice failed?”
“Didn’t I answer this before? I don’t know at all.”
“Okay. Do you know what happened to the two lovers?”
“Turned to ash. An acceptable sacrifice to God makes the lovers burn like the sun with their flames dancing around and burning the earth free from sin or at least that’s what I heard.”
“These sacrifices happen once the last pair of lovers die, right?”
“That’s right. Their fire is taken, and the next lovers are prepared to be able to receive it.”
“How did the cycle even start?”
“From what I can remember from what I was taught, humanity was so sinful that God offered us a way to be free from one vice at a time if we showed that there was still such a thing as true love among us. That’s when a couple, who perfectly loved each other, showed God their love. This was pleasing and acceptable to God, so he freed us from a vice and the world was at peace for a time until the lovers died. To regain and keep the peace, this cycle of presenting true love was started.”
“Wow. I didn’t know that. The world seems like the was in the times before the sacrifice minus the ash.”
“What if it was? We don’t know. I don’t even remember it being mentioned. Maybe it’s the reason why the order and tradition were so emphasized and protected.”
“I guess you’re right. Also, it sounds like your life was nothing but boredom and stress.”
“It was, and it’s funny how I don’t miss it. Despite being stuck in this armor with two missing legs and my burned body, I prefer this life free from the order and everyone in it.”
“…”
“What about you?”
“I don’t know. I was thinking about whether or not I like it more. I miss having enough food and water. Having my face back to normal would be good too, but it doesn’t look too different from what it was before. Here, take a look.”
Lucus takes off his mask and shows his face to Silva who’s surprised to see a decent face damaged by fire. Her imagination sees an image of the boy he once was.
“You look better than most I can tell you that.”
“What about you?”
“Nah, you don’t want to see my ugly face. My sins have done some bad damage to it.”
“I won’t judge harshly. I didn’t judge you harshly when we first met, right? So why would I insult or lie to you?”
“…Okay, but I warned you.”
Silva shows her face to Lucus. It has a few holes in it that show her teeth through it. She struggles to look at him while he is looking at her and puts her mask on.
“You don’t look bad.”
“That’s not much of a compliment.”
“I can see the pretty girl you were and still are.”
“O-oh shut it! That’s a lie.”
“I’m not lying. It’s what I can see and imagine.”
“Your imagination is making you see things that don’t exist.”
“Well, when we turn the world back to normal, then I’ll see if my imagination was right.”
“Okay. Wait, why do you want to see my real face for?”
“Uh, no reason. I’m just curious.”
“Okay, then how about you tell me all about your past since I’ve been talking about mine.”
“I don’t know.”
“Come on. I even showed you my face.”
“What would you like to know about a blacksmith’s family? Nothing but work and play here and there.”
“Is that it? There has to be more.”
“Nope. The rest is personal details I’d rather not talk about.”
“Alright. If you say so.”
“Huh. Do you see that up ahead?”
“Yeah. It’s really dark and I could’ve sworn it was still the morning. Is it fog?”
“I can’t tell any time of day in this grey world. It doesn’t look like there’s a way around, so we have to be careful.”
“You’re right. It could be another demon up to no good.”
Lucus and Silva ready their weapons as they enter the dark fog. As they enter it, they see they’re in a dark town with signs of a struggle with cut marks and arrows on the buildings, ground, and piles of clothes.
Silva examines the clothes and says, “There was a fight here and dozens of people died. When people die nowadays, their body turns to ashes.”
“I know. I’ve seen it happen before.”
The two then hear what sounds like whispers in the fog. They cautiously walk forward as they hear different sounds.
Lucus hears, “Stay back.”
“Be careful.”
“What are you doing?”
“Don’t do that.”
“Stay close.”
“Don’t talk to anyone.”
“We have to move.”
Silva hears, “I’ve missed you.”
“They can’t separate us.”
“Why don’t we run away?”
“I love you.”
“They don’t know anything.”
“Why don’t you do more?”
“You’ve failed. Again.”
Both hear different things coming from different voices in different directions. These are voices they recognize and hearing them brings back memories that they try to block out as they look around the foggy town for the source. That is when they see shadow figures approach them. They perceive different figures that look different to them. Lucus sees two headless figures while Silva sees two imposing figures, one that brings back feelings of love, and the other being figures in armor. Slicing the figures apart only intensifies the feelings they felt.
“What were those two figures?” Lucus asks.
“Two? I killed more than two,” Silva says.
“This fog is doing something to us. We have to get out or stop the source soon.”
“Let’s hurry and find an exit first. I can’t think straight here.”
“Yeah, let’s do that.”
Lucus and Silva go back the way they came only to find themselves in a different part of town.
“What? This doesn’t look anything like what we passed when we first came here,” Lucus says.
They keep walking around and find themselves walking in loops.
“The fog is making us loop around. We have to destroy the source if we want to get out,” Silva says.
“That’s fine with me. These voices and fog are getting me aggravated,” Lucus says.
While going around, the voices intensify along with the feelings they bring. Lucus and Silva begin feeling sad as their faults are brought up by their memories. They come across more shadow figures they avoid to not intensify the feelings they feel.
“I told you before, I’m sorry. How many times do I need to say it before I’m forgiven?” Lucus asks.
“What are you talking about?” Silva asks.
“Huh? It’s nothing. I’m just talking to myself. Are these voices bringing up bad memories for you?”
“Yeah.”
“Hang in there and don’t let them get to you. Remember what I said about being positive.”
“I am. Thank you for the advice. I don’t know how I can deal with this without them.”
“Don’t mention it.”
What Lucus fails to tell Silva is that his feelings of sadness intensify to despair when his feelings made him apologize. The two keep searching the town as they struggle to find the source of the fog. Eventually, they come across a real dark figure that runs away when they near it. Lucus tries to catch it with his arm chain but misses.
“That was it!” Lucus says as they run after it.
They run after the figure, but they lose it after a short chase. Silva falls to her knees and struggles to get up under the weight of the past reminding her of her sins.
Lucus tries to help her up as he says, “Come on, Silva. It couldn’t have run far.”
“I’m sorry we can’t be together. I tried everything I could. It’s not meant to be,” Silva says in a delusion.
“What? Snap out of it!”
“I want to be with you. I’ll do everything I can.”
“Silva!”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Lucus. I don’t think I can keep going.”
“Of course you can. If a well trained assassin like you can’t continue, what makes you think a blacksmith can?”
“I barely even fought anyone. I got my butt kicked more than anything.”
“Don’t think about that. Just think positively.”
“I just realized that some of the clothes we found have daggers and swords in them. That means that there were people who killed themselves because of how they felt. Maybe I should…”
“Don’t think about that!”
“But no one believes in me. No one likes me.”
“I believe in you and I like you. We’re friends, remember, so get up! I’ll help you.”
“Okay. Okay.”
Lucus helps Silva up as they continue searching for the real dark figure. They eventually come across it and manage to corner it in an alley. The dark figure is a demon that has dark fog coming out of its head that makes it look like it has horns. Dark fog is also coming out of its eyes and mouth. Its arms are thick and protecting its heart while its legs are thin. Lucus slashes the thick arms of the demon and gets his sword stuck in it while Silva sticks her arm blade into the demon’s head and gets it stuck. The demon releases more fog to overpower them with their feelings to try to defend itself.
“This isn’t working,” Lucus says, “We have to get its heart.”
“Let’s get it then,” Silva responds as she takes her blade out of the demon’s head.
Lucus stabs the demon’s head and pins it down and uses his arm chain to restrain its legs while Silva reaches into it as she tries to pull out its heart. She manages to grab onto it and begins to pull out the heart, but it only makes the demon pour out more dark fog.
“It all happened in the past!” Lucus says as he fights his guilt and the voices, “This is the present and I’m going to make up for what I did!”
“I’m going to fix my mistakes!” Silva says as she’s strengthened by what Lucus said, “Together, we’re going to undo all our mistakes!”
Silva pulls out the demon’s heart and with it, the demon’s body turns to ash and disperses into the ground along with all the dark fog. Silva begins to cry along with Lucus who holds in his tears as he hugs Silva to comfort her. She hugs him back as the sadness exits her body.
Lucus then takes Silva’s hands then says, “To avoid that from ever happening again, we have to be honest with one another and get our past off our backs. This might not be the best time, but we have the time to do it, okay?”
“I understand.”
“Then tell me. Was it you who started all this?”
“…”
“Silva tell me the truth. You being close friends with the boy who was supposed to be true lovers with his girl. The relationship you had together did something to the sacrifice, didn’t it?”
“…”
“Silva. You can be honest with me. I won’t hate you.”
“Fine. I did it. I spoiled the sacrifice of true love. I made him fall in love with me and that’s why the sacrifice of true love didn’t work. I made God burn the entire world to ashes! Okay?! I’m a monster…”
“No, you’re not. You’re trying to make things right. If you weren’t, then you would be an evil person. Do you understand?”
“Yes, but I don’t completely believe you.”
“Okay, how about this then? The worst thing I did that has been haunting me was that I killed my parents. We were on the run because my parents had a bounty on their heads. They never told me why and they told me never to ask because they were so paranoid that someone would hear and rat them out to someone. We traveled from town to town and never got to settle down because they were scared that someone would eventually claim the bounty on their heads. Their fears were realized when a group of bounty hunters tried to knock down our doors. They told me to escape, but I hated them so much that I killed them as they were blocking the door. The bounty hunters celebrated what I did and gave me enough to survive on, but I didn’t feel accomplished, relieved, or happy. I just felt sad.”
“Lucus…”
“That’s why I can never clean my blade. That’s why it’s always broken. This is why I always try to be positive. I can’t make up for my mistakes and what I’ve done if I always dwell on the past.”
“I get it.”
“Well? Do you get it now? You’re not a monster. Even the worst mistakes, the worst sins, can’t make you into a demon. You’re a flawed person just like me and we’re going to set things right. You ready?”
“…I’m ready.”
“Okay then. Let’s go.”
Before they go, Silva hugs Lucus then says, “Thank you, Lucus. For everything.”
“Heh, don’t mention it.”
They embrace each other for a little while before heading out again with the weight of their past feeling significantly lighter.

Here's another song from Red's amazing new album that I think ya'll should listen to. I was going to post one on the previous post, but I forgot.

The Spark of World Burning Love: Chapter 2 – Past Vices Brought to Life

Chapter 2 – Past Vices Brought to Life
“I’m still not completely getting your positive attitude,” Silva says as they continue walking to their destination, “It has to be more than having the glass is half full mentality.”
“How about viewing things from God’s perspective then? We’re all sinful people, but God didn’t burn us all to ash, so that must mean there’s something in us still worth saving. At least that’s what I was taught in church when we still had them around.”
“Ah, that’s right.”
“You know I’d expect someone from your order to know that since they were so close to God.”
“Let’s just say that current and some past events shook my faith until recently.”
“I can understand that. A lot of faithful people I know lost their faith. Some even killed themselves, drowned themselves in drink, or turned to terrible lives.”
“For me, it feels even worse because of what I was and how so many people hate me and try to kill me because of it.”
“I think you’re a good person if it means anything to you.”
“You-you do?”
“Of course. You are trying to correct the mistake that caused all of this, so I think you’re a good person despite whatever you might’ve done or not done.”
Silva can’t help but giggle to herself and blush beneath her iron mask to the extent that her burned face will allow her.
She then says, “That’s the nicest thing anyone’s said to me for a while. Heck, I haven’t even thought anything good about myself for a while.”
“You should try to. If you hate yourself, then you aren’t going to live for very long because why would you take care of someone you don’t really like?”
“I guess that’s a good way of thinking about it.”
Before the two know it, they’re low again on food and water so they stop by a shantytown that appears to be populated with normal people or rather as normal as the ashen world can be. The people in the town wear masks with designs of hearts and other symbols associated with love on their masks. Its farms consist of a strange looking fruit that’s appealing to look at. In the food market, every farmer is selling a variant of the strange fruit. Lucus and Silva go up to it to have a better look.
“What kind of fruit is this?” Lucus asks, “I’ve never seen it before.”
“It’s a fruit that’s come out of the earth as a result of it being burned by Divine fire,” the farmer explains, “As a result, this fruit is also Divine and healthy for both your body and soul.”
“Really? How much is it?”
“You can’t put a price on Divinity, especially during these times, so they’re free. Take as many as you want. Here, try one.”
“Might as well.”
Lucus reaches to try the fruit only to get his hand dragged away by an older woman who says, “No, boy. You shouldn’t try that. Try my own.”
“Why makes yours so special that you have to pull me away from trying his?”
“Stop trying to always steal my business, cougar. You know I can’t beat your good looks to help me sell my food,” the farmer says.
The woman pulls Lucus in to whisper, “You’re in danger here.”
“What’s going on?” Lucus whispers.
“Follow me and I’ll tell you.”
The woman then takes Lucus’ hand and is about to lead him away but is stopped by Silva.
“Where are you two going?” Silva says with an aggressive tone in her voice.
“She’s going to show me her farm where she grows her fruits. Come on,” Lucus says.
“Okay,” Silva says with suspicion.
The woman leads the two to her ranch and into her house.
She begins to explain, “You two came to the wrong town to stop for food at.”
“Why’s that?” Lucus asks.
“Because it’s under the influence of a demon of ash.”
“Are you talking about those black monsters made of ash?”
“So, you’ve faced them before?”
“Dozens,” Silva adds, “I find them everywhere I go.”
“You do? I thought they were few and far between from my travels. As far as I know, these demons came to life because of us not giving God a sacrifice of true love. The demons are made from the sins he took away from us.”
“How about you start answering our questions first? Who are you and why are you here?” Silva says.
“Okay, I should tell you that first. My name is Sapera and I was just a traveler in search of a place to settle down. When I got here, I thought everything was normal until I saw the effects of the fruit that people sell. They won’t force you to eat it unless you try to leave town and when you eat it, you become a slave to the demon. I’ve seen it sneaking around in the shadows.”
“Where does the fruit come from?”
“I think it primarily comes from the demon, but its slaves who have eaten the fruit puke it out into the ground to grow more.”
“Ekk,” Lucus and Silva react.
“I know. It’s good that they don’t know about my secret stash of food. I’m beginning to run low, so we have to find a way to kill that demon to free the town.”
“Are you sure that will work? I’ve tried to kill them before and failed with my weapons being nearly broken.”
“What? Are you kidding me? Here I thought we had a fighting chance. Aren’t you an assassin from that order from years ago?”
“Yeah, but even I have my limits.”
“That makes a whole lot of sense. You and your order are nothing but useless.”
Silva is struck by Sapera’s words and takes a step back and turns her back away.
“Silva…” Lucus says as he puts his hand on Silva’s shoulder.
“She’s right, Lucus.”
“No, she isn’t. Sapera, Silva here knows how to fix the world.”
“Does she?”
“She does. I believe she does, at least.”
“Well, I guess someone in her order would have a plan in case something went wrong.”
“Right and that doesn’t make her useless.”
“You’re right. I’m sorry, Silva.”
“It’s okay. Maybe if we all came up with a plan in attacking the demon then we’ll succeed.”
“I know how it moves around and some of its tricks. We have to be careful in how we do this since there are people under its control.”
A pair of sneaking eyes catch Lucus’ attention as he sees them looking at them through the window. When he makes eye contact with the eyes, they move away.
“Hey, I think it might’ve already found us. I saw a pair of eyes looking into the house,” Lucus says.
“Ah heck. We have to move now!” Sapera says as she picks up a sword in her house and goes outside.
Lucus and Silva follow her outside to see people converging on their position with the demon retreating.
“The demon is making those people come after us. We have to push through them,” Sapera says.
The trio pushes through the crowd of civilians while trying to kill any of them. They keep pushing and run after the demon until they see it stop in the town’s center. More people come in, but they don’t fight. They just stand guard around the exits.
“This was part of its plan!” Sapera says.
“Watch out!” Silva says as the demon spits a liquid out of its split head.
Silva pushes Sapera out of the way and gets hit. She wobbles on her feet as she holds her head.
“Silva! Are you okay?” Lucus says.
As Lucus nears Silva, she lunges at him. He manages to grab her hands to stop her from grabbing him.
She says, “I love you! You’re the only person who accepts me with my flaws. Let me embrace you forever!”
“Get a hold of yourself, Silva! Sapera! Get that demon while I take care of Silva!”
“I’ll try!”
Silva lifts her mask and almost pukes the same liquid the demon did onto Lucus, but he manages to dodge it. Meanwhile, Sapera struggles to fight the demon that’s fast on its long legs that look like its wearing high heels. The demon jumps and slides all over the place and even uses the people under its control as shields. She is unable to hit it and the demon takes advantage of her situation to spit its liquid at her face. Now everyone but Lucus is under its control.
“This is a big problem, but I think I have a solution. Sorry about this Silva,” Lucus says before he kicks Silva away.
He switches one of arms out for another that shoots out his hand with a chain attached to the back. Lucus manages to wrap around his hand and chain around the demon. With the demon in chains, he throws it around to knock down the crowd around him that’s closing in on him. He then brings it closer to slash at it and hits it several times as he tosses it around to slash it and hit it into the walls. The agitated demon manages to stand up and charges at Lucus with its mouth open. It shoots out its liquids at him as it charges at him, but he manages to dodge it. When it gets close enough, Lucus dodges the last projectile and does one large swing at the demon that decapitates it.
The death of the demon makes its body turn to ash that blows in the wind and frees everyone under its control. Those freed from its control puke out seeds onto the ground as they wake up from the demon’s control.
Lucus runs to Silva and asks, “Silva, are you okay now?”
“Yeah, I’m sorry I lost control of myself.”
“Don’t be sorry. You saved me,” Sapera says.
“Only for a little while.”
“But you still helped me in saving this town. I think that if you keep this up, then you can save the world.”
“Really.”
“Yes, I do.”
Both Sapera and Silva smile at each other behind their masks and can feel a mutual friendship between them.
“Are you going to come with us, Sapera?” Silva asks.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t. I want to help these people recover from what the demon happened to them. Besides, you don’t need me. You two seem good together.”
“What makes you say that?”
“You fight well together, and don’t you remember what you said to Lucus?”
“Th-that wasn’t. I wasn’t in control of myself!”
“The demon may exaggerate feelings, but there’s no doubt that you have feelings for him.”
“We’re just friends. Right, Lucus?”
“Right and oh, before I forget, can we please have some of your food before we go, Sapera? It’s why we came into town.”
“Men. Always thinking about your stomachs.”
“That’s not-”
“I’m just joking. Of course you can have some of my food. It’s the least I can do to help you in your adventure.”
After taking some food and refilling their water a bit, Lucus and Silva say goodbye to the people of the town and Sapera and continue onward.

The Spark of World Burning Love: Chapter 1 – From the Ashes

Chapter 1 – From the Ashes
In the ashen wasteland of the world, a lone girl wanders in the armor of an old order. She comes across a town filled with few people. It struggles to survive as people farm what little they can from the ground that brings up barely edible food. The people in the town look at her as she walks in and through the town wary of her intentions. She finds a small house with a sign that has a sword and shield on it and goes into it. In the house, she finds a boy in a steel mask who’s working on swords, daggers, axes, bows, and shields. There’s a large broken sword in the back of the house that’s partially covered.
The boy turns around and puts his work down before saying, “Hello. What are you looking for?”
“I need my blades sharpened and fixed,” the girl says as she puts down a bag of coins.
“Sure. Let me see them.”
The girl takes the two blades off her left arm and her legs and gives them to the boy.
“I can work with these. It shouldn’t take too long.”
“Thank you.”
The boy takes off his hands and replaces them with a sharp pair of hands.
As he works on the weapons, he says, “So, where are you from?”
“Nowhere special, why?”
“That’s a fancy set of armor you have. Metal is hard to come by these days since most of the earth is ash. I actually remember seeing it before.”
“Where?”
“There was an order of soldiers and assassins who protected the next couple who were supposed to present their love to God. I think the order was called the Order of Divine Swords and Love or something weird like that. Their love was supposed to be an acceptable sacrifice to Him to take away one of humanity’s many weaknesses to sin, but that’s not what happened. Do you know why that is?”
“No, why?”
“I don’t know. I’m asking you. I can only guess that the sacrifice was offensive to Him because the entire world burned as a result. Your armor and weapons make me think that you are one of those people from those soldiers of legend.”
“What if I was?”
“Then I hope you could answer my question instead of asking me more. It’d be nice to know why the world the way it is and why everyone got burned.”
Silence fills the house until the boy reaches for a dagger and tries to slash the girl with it. The girl defends herself with daggers that come out of her right hand.
“You are from the old order. An assassin to be exact. No one else uses or can even make a hand that daggers come out of,” the boy says before backing off, “I’m sorry if I scared you. Why didn’t you say who you were to me?”
The boy goes back to fixing the girl’s weapons.
“Because people attack me if they know where I’m from. They think the order failed them and they hate us for that.”
“Can you answer my previous question now? Can you tell me why God burned the world?”
“No, but I can tell you that I need your help.”
“What does an assassin like you need from a blacksmith like me?”
“I need your help to get back to the place where the couple whose love was supposed to keep the world safe. If we get there, I think we can fix all of this.”
“But why me?”
“Because I’ve asked other people and they’ve either tried to kill me or denied me. They think God abandoned them and there’s no reason to try to be good anymore.”
“And you think we can fix all of this?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Just trust me. I had a vision that God gave me of the world being fixed from there.”
“The order did supposedly have a special connection with God.”
“Please, can you help me? I’ll-”
“Sure.”
“Really?”
“I’ve got nothing better to do than starve and slowly die of thirst. It’s not like the town needs me or anything when I’ve already made all the weapons they need. Let me finish with weapons first and get my essentials.”
“Thank you so much.”
“Don’t mention it. Life was getting too boring here anyway. What’s your name?”
“Silva.”
“My name is Lucus. Heh, both of our names mean wood or forest in Latin. Did you know that?”
“No.”
“Well, it’s an interesting detail. Do you think our meeting has anything to do with God’s plan?”
“I don’t know.”
“Hmm. I hope it does.”
After Lucus finishes up his work on Silva’s blades, he gives them back and gets his stuff that includes another two pairs of hands and the large broken sword in the back.
Silva asks him, “Why are you bringing that with you when you have so many other sharper blades?”
“Don’t let its appearance fool you. It’s my best blade. I only need to fix it up a bit.”
“How long have you been working on it?”
“I work on it a little bit every day.”
“That’s surprising since you got my blades done pretty fast for how dull and chipped they were. That blade isn’t cursed by your sins, is it?”
“Is your armor cursed by your sins? Is that why you haven’t changed it to keep your past a secret?”
“Okay. I won’t mention it again.”
“Thank you.”
Lucus locks the door behind them when they leave and tosses the key to a neighbor as they walk away.
“Watch the shop for me. I’m going on a bit of an adventure,” Lucus says to the neighbor.
“O-okay. You got it, Lucus,” the neighbor responds.
“Who’s that? A friend?” Silva asks.
“Not really. Just a neighbor.”
“What? Don’t you care about your house?”
“No, not really. I could build another one if I wanted to.”
“O-kay.”
“Now, lead the way.”
Silva leads Lucus out of the town and into the ashen wasteland.
“Man, I haven’t stretched my legs in months, Lucus says.
“Do you miss being in the wasteland?” Silva asks.
“No, I just miss having a reason to do something different. It gets boring cleaning and fixing weapons in a town where nothing happens. Sure, troublemakers come every now and then, but they’re not much trouble.”
“Do you have any training in using a sword?”
“Of course I do. My parents taught me.”
“Where are your parents?”
“Dead, unfortunately. I’d rather not talk about it.”
“I understand. My parents are dead as well.”
“Okay, let’s leave the sad talk there. The world is sad enough as it is. It’s better to be hopeful. Let’s play I spy. I spy with my little eye something black.”
“Ash.”
“No.”
“The sun?”
“Nope.”
“The sky.”
“It’s kind of black, but I’d say it’s a dark grey.”
“That’s basically what black is.”
“But it’s still not what I spy.”
“Okay, then let me think…”
Lucus and Silva play little games and make idle conversation as they travel across the ashen wasteland. In their travels, they come across the ruins of a small city with a castle in the center surrounded by small houses and walls.
“Wow. I knew some places burned to the ground, but I didn’t think a place like this would,” Lucus says.
“All of the towns and cities with castles I’ve passed by are burned to the ground,” Silva says, “Your town was the most intact place I’ve been to.”
“That’s surprising to hear because that place is falling apart. Let’s see if this place at least has some water.”
The two search around the ruins and find a small pond where they refill their water canisters with what little water they can.
“We’re blessed to find water here. Maybe God did put you up to this task if we found water here of all places,” Lucus says.
“I hope so,” Silva says before she hears a noise that gets her attention.
“What is it?”
“We’re not alone.”
Lucus readies his sword as he says, “If anyone is out there, we’re leaving now. There’s still enough water here to quench your thirst if you want it.”
“We don’t need that water when you have something else we need,” a man says as he leads his group of ten people to where Lucus and Silva are.
The group is all wearing armor like Silva’s and masks that barely cover their burned and hollow faces.
“And what might that be?” Lucus asks.
“That assassin you’re traveling with is responsible for what happened to the world. I think she needs to pay with her life.”
“What makes you think that will change anything?”
“I don’t know, and I don’t care. All I want to do is see her suffer for what she did.”
“Lucus, these are some of the people I told you about,” Silva whispers.
“Yeah, and? Maybe I can negotiate a deal,” Lucus whispers back, “How about this?” Lucus addresses the group, “How about you let us go and let the wasteland kill us, eh? We’re already running low on food and water and there are many more people out there more dangerous than you. Just assume that we’re dead when we leave your sight.”
“Why would I even consider that when I want to kill her myself? How about you help us in killing her and we can pay you with whatever you want? Do we have a deal, boy?”
“Eh…”
The ground starts to shake around them. When the ground stops shaking, a large arm reaches out of the ash and pulls a person from the group into it. Other arms start reaching out for people and pulling them down until it gets slashed enough. That is when a large black monster emerges from the ash with several arms and mouths on its body. It has four legs and a large mouth in the front of it that makes it look like it has demon horns. The group starts attacking the monster as their members are being eaten and tossed around.
“Come on Lucus!” Silva says as she leads him away.
“Have you seen monsters like that before?” Lucus asks.
“Yeah, and too hard to kill. One of them was the reason my weapons were in such bad condition.”
“Then let’s hope this is the last time we see one.”
“I doubt it.”
“Then our adventure is going to be an even more exciting one.”
“If you say so. I’m surprised you can be so positive.”
“Like I said before, the world is sad enough as it is. It’s better hopeful.”
“You have to teach me your mindset.”
“We have enough time and we’re finally far enough from that monster, so let me give you some tips on how to keep your head up high.”
Lucus begins to tell Silva of how to be hopeful as they continue on their adventure.

Check out this amazing new song by Red that shares the name of this chapter. I'm listening to their new album as I write this story.

Another dream that's going to be a book

Here's another cover I've made for a story that's been on my mind. I've had a dream where a group of freedom fighters fight for a right that they think they deserve, get it, then realize it was a mistake when another group fights for a different right.
At first, I didn't see the point of writing this until I recently realized what the point of the dream really was. There are people who try to make their sins into laws so they can feel justified in doing evil. This story follows three people who try to get the right to vote in their own political leaders at first but then they start adding on more things and only realize they started the wrong kind of revolution when they're in power and face off against a rebellion inspired by them.
This will be set in the Good vs Right universe as the dream was set in a sci-fi setting and the setting itself will be useful in connecting government laws to the Law of God to make people question what laws are lawful and which are just unlawful excuses to sin.

This collection contains several short stories about people who go to great lengths for the people they love. Two of the stories feature the Only for You mask that changes the wearer's personality and looks into whatever they want. Another two stories are about a father that races to save his daughter and a girl who is psychologically tortured by a voice in her head.

The Horrors of Separation: A Lost Choice and Consequence Story

The Horrors of Separation: A Lost Choice and Consequence Story

Why do I still have him in my mind? It’s been what? A little over a month since I last talked to him and he still takes up a place in my mind. The last time I talked about him to my family and friends they said to not worry about him and if he wanted to be with me, he wouldn’t have stopped talking to me. Other guys have tried to be with me, but I’ve turned them all down. I feel like I just want to let him go. It’s just that I can’t. My heart can’t let go of its past feelings for him. My memories won’t stop bringing him up.
“Admit it. You still lust over him. When you get a boyfriend, you should take out all your frustrations on him,” a voice says in my head.
No. That isn’t right. I’m not going to listen to you. These stupid demons in my head won’t stop bothering me. They’ve been a pain from the start of the week and have been infiltrating my dreams with perverse and violent visions. Praying and talking to a priest usually help, but not this time for whatever reason. I’d hate to think that I have that Human Mirror condition or whatever it’s called.
“It’s okay to think the things you do. Imagine if he comes back to you. Do you remember the day that you said goodbye to him? Do you remember how he tried chasing after you as your parents drove you away? Imagine putting that precious face of his into the dirt for what he did. What a liar. Imagine him crying for forgiveness at your feet.”
Stop it, stop it! I don’t want to think about that!
“But you do. You can feel the pleasure rising inside of you. You can feel the hatred.”
How did pop-pop deal with his anger issues? I look up to his mask that I have on the wall. My dad made it after finding the design that pop-pop hid. Apparently, he used to be a vigilante of some kind on top of being a boxer. Pop-pop was a hero who killed people with his bare hands to subdue the anger in him or at least, that’s the story he told dad. The only reason why pop-pop stopped being a hero was because he didn’t subdue his anger. He only made it burn more and his first wife was brutally killed while he was out.
“Why don’t you fight for yourself like pop-pop did? There are people in school who get on your nerves. Fight them. Your parents get on your nerves. They tore you from the love of your life. They gave him a reason to stop talking to you.”
No, I won’t. Stop talking to me!
“Stop thinking about it then. Stop letting the thought bother you.”
Going for a walk should help.
“Where are you going, Alexa?” my dad asks before I go out.
“Oh, I’m just going for a walk.”
“Alright. Just be careful and bring an umbrella. It looks like it’s going to rain.”
“Okay. I won’t be out long.”
It does look like it’s going to rain outside. I have a bad feeling about it, but I don’t know why. Maybe it’s just the weather. After I take an umbrella, I go out and walk to the park.
“Remember when he used to take you to the park? Remember when he saved you from falling off a tree? Remember when you called him a hero?”
Shut it. I don’t want to think about it. That’s why I’m out here after all.
“Oh, but you do. Admit that you still have feelings for him.”
Stop it.
“Admit it and I might.”
What’s going on? Am I walking in circles in the park? Even when I cross the street, I’m still walking in the park.
“You’re thinking in circles in your mind. Admit it.”
Okay, fine. I admit that I still have feelings for him, but that’s not going to fix anything.
“You’re going to find a fix soon enough, trust me.”
Why would I trust anything that you say?
“Because I know how you feel. I know all your desires and passions.  I know all your sins and weakness. Do you see me?”
What are you?
“Can’t you see? I’m you.”
N-no! You aren’t! You can’t be!
“See? I can control your hand. Stop hitting yourself. Stop hitting yourself.”
Stop it!
“Why don’t you touch yourself now? You’ve tried it before.”
Get away from me! I see you for who you truly are. You’re a monster with four arms and three heads. One with a mouth, one that has two faces, and one that looks like pop-pop’s mask.
“This is just nonna, pop-pop, and you gave me. The perverted side is from her. You remember the way she dressed for pop-pop in those old photos. It’s a good thing she still looked beautiful in her old age.”
That doesn’t mean she was a pervert! She was a great doctor and writer who helped hundreds of people!
“You don’t know as much as you think. At least you’ll agree with me about pop-pop, right? His wife died because he wanted to go out to kill people to pretend to be a hero and let out his stress.”
Shut up! He was a boxer who was an inspiration for lots of people!
“Oh, they were such saints, weren’t they? It’s a shame they died before you got to talk to them. If dad got to them in their dying moments, they may have held on for a little longer.”
It’s not his fault. Besides, I talk to them in my prayers.
“If you say so.”
Hey, where am I now? Ack. It’s starting to rain.
“Oh, look at who’s laying over there. It’s him.”
What? Isn’t that…it can’t be. Michael…It can’t be him.
“He’s a little worse for wear but it’s definitely him.”
Stop tricking me!
“This isn’t a trick. How could I come up with an imagination of him in a torn black dress if that image of him never entered into your mind?”
What happened to him? How did he even get here?
“I don’t know, but you know how God punishes people. He must’ve fallen into the sin of lust in a terrible way that made him end up on the streets like this.”
I don’t even know what I should do.
“I know what you should do. You should take him into the alley and have your way with him.”
No!
“Oh, you’re right. We should be more civilized about this. Take him home and have your way with him when mom and dad are at work.”
Shut up.
“Pleasure is too good for him. You should inflict all the pain you want on him. He’ll understand. Just look at him. I’m sure he feels pathetic already. He deserves it, doesn’t he?”
I’m not going to do that either.
“What? Are you actually going to bring him to your house and be nice to him despite everything he’s done to you?”
Yes.
“Why?”
Because it’s like you’ve gotten me to admit. I love him.
“If you say so, but don’t blame me if he comes after you instead.”
Shut up.
“Don’t tell me that you want him to do that.”
I’m not talking to you anymore…Good. It’s finally quiet. Okay…here we go. I hope this is actually Michael and not a figment of my imagination.
“Michael, is that you?”
“Uh. Yes, I’m Michael, but who are you?” he asks.
He doesn’t remember me? Something really bad must’ve happened to him.
“I’m Alexa. Remember? I moved here a couple of months ago with my family. You…look like you’ve been through a lot. Do you want to come over my house to get cleaned up?”
“Yeah. I’d like that.”
It’s him. It’s really him and I can’t help but smile because of it. As we walk together back to my house, I can’t help my feelings of gladness. I don’t feel mad at him anymore. I’m just glad that he’s finally back with me. Don’t worry, Michael. I still love you no matter what and I’ll help you out of whatever you’ve gotten into.
