Memoirs of the Mad Maids: Entry 2 – Gialla Vespa

Entry 2 – Gialla Vespa
I have so many plans that have failed, but I’m still not giving up.
“I will get that promotion, Ms. Nera!”
“That’s the spirit, Ms. Gialla! Let’s work hard today to move up the ranks!”
“Yeah!”
We head off in our separate directions for the days work and-no! I’m not worried about some stupid promotion. All that happens is that our rooms look better and we get more dresses. I don’t care about material goods. I only care about serving my masters! No! I don’t care about them! I-it’s still hard to regain control of my mind let alone my body that barely responds to my will. I guess I wasn’t completely lying when I said that I don’t care about material goods. I was making my own business as one trading and selling goods to reach some arbitrary limit of wealth and possessions I had in my mind.
This place attracts people like that who want that even for the purest reasons and it gives them what they want in a way. Urgh! It’s hard to concentrate with this place’s control over me. Sometimes it’s easier to let go to blend in easier, but I need to leave my notes for the next victim that comes in. I also need to fix my decorati-traps so that they don’t affect anyone too much. The other girls and guys struggle with it more than I do. Nera was unfortunate enough to get a promotion and eat the delicious-disgusting…meat that’s changed her. The meat itself changes people and makes people less and less able to control themselves.
When it’s in front of you, you find yourself unable to control yourself and it’s better to do so despite how disgusting it may be. Refusing to eat will make you starve to death within a couple days. The meat we eat, especially the fresh and seasoned kind, is the most potent. Since eating it, Nera hasn’t been as able or willing to help us since. She’s such a good and loyal girl who will rise above me at this rate! I better step up my game, so that-she doesn’t lose complete control of herself like Azzura. She betrayed us because of all the power the master-or whatever is controlling us and who owns this building. It got to her and she only thinks about herself now despite acting like a caring mistress.
Ack. I hate it when my head hurts and I start thinking things that sound silly. I’m one of the oldest members here and I should act like it. The other girls will be depending on me to do my job the best I can. I’m not that far away from reaching the top-I almost forgot about that so-I should do everything I can to get it. Here’s hoping that Ms. Azzura doesn’t mind a competing Mistress. I’ve heard that the master of the castle treats his mistresses very well though I don’t really know how he treats the male masters. Speaking about the mistress…
“Ms. Azzura! Is there something that you need?”
“Yes, Ms. Gialla. I need you to take care of something that only someone of your status and experience can take care of. It’s going to be a lot, but I hope you can deal with it.”
“Don’t keep me in suspense. Just tell me what I must do.” She’s coming closer to whisper it in my ear. This can’t be good. “One of the girls tried to escape and died outside near the gardens. Please remove her before someone sees her.”
“W-will do.”
“Hm? Is there something the matter?”
“N-no. Just a bit sad that one of us is dead.”
“You shouldn’t let it affect you in any way. You must be strong to set an example for the other girls.”
“You’re right, Ms. Azzura. I’ll get right to it then!”
“As you should.”
I give Azzura a smile before heading outside. Dang it. Which girl lost it this time? The other girls and I keep reminding them to keep pressing on and that if one girl falls behind, then the rest of us do. It’s difficult enough to convince someone new to continuously fight on while keeping it secret especially with the rumored consequences that are associated with us being freed. The consequences can’t be as bad as staying until we’re thrown out when we get too old and I’m guessing this girl couldn’t wait to leave I don’t blame her.
Now, where can she be. She’s supposed to be around the garden…There she is! Poor girl couldn’t handle the stress of working here. I have to be a better and more supportive big sister to prevent things like this happening again. It’s a good thing that no one else is here to see this. I don’t want the other girls to get upset at this. It’s also good that she’s hollow now that’s she dead, which makes it easier for me to carry her inside. Thanks to my athletic abilities, I carry the girl through the tight spaces and small tunnels. Oh! What’s that sound? It sounds like someone else here up with me. Oh, that’s right! I forgot that Ms. Bianca is just as athletic as I am despite her small size. She’s probably the fastest, but also the youngest of the girls here. I hope I don’t see her-Ah!
“Ms. Bianca, w-what are you doing here?”
“Just cleaning this space. What are you doing?”
“Just-uh-doing something important for Ms. Azzura.”
“Can you tell me about it?”
“I’m afraid I can’t. It’s something that a big sister like me has to deal with.”
“Oh, alright. Well, I guess I’ll leave you to it and get back to work.”
“Thank you. Keep up the good work and don’t be a stranger to the other girls even though they’re older than you, okay? If you need help, just ask one of us.”
“Okay!”
There she goes speedily off to work. It’s a good thing the body of the girl was easy to hide. Ms. Bianca is a good girl who does her best every day. Because of her size, she’s typically overlooked by the other girls who sometimes forget about her. I wonder if she’s doing what I told her to. It’s unfortunate that a little girl like Bianca got dragged into this, but she is one of the most active and useful girls.
What am I thinking? I have to put this girl away and go back to my duties! After taking my little short cut, I throw the hollow doll-like body of the girl into the crusher, a giant mouth that eats the remains and nourishes the castle. At least her death will make things eas-har-easier for us, I mean. Ah! There goes the visitor’s bell again. I can’t wait to see who’s visiting us now. Hopefully, it’s someone who-is nicer than the last.
We all go near the door and give our greeting like usual and since Ms. Nera did such a good job last time, she’s showing our guest around the castle to give him a reason to work here before bringing him to Ms. Azzura. Don’t fail us, Nera. While that happens, I go back to my duties to keep me busy. Huh? Why is Ms. Azzura coming this way? I hope nothing bad happened again.
“Is there something wrong, Ms. Azzura?”
“No, Ms. Gialla. I’d just came by to remind you that Ms. Nera is doing a great job showing our new guest around. At the rate that she’s going, she could surpass you.”
“I hope not, but then again, the person who does their best should surpass their peers.”
“Of course, but a “prank” or two could even your power relation with her should she get ahead of you.”
“Thank you! I’ll keep that in mind.”
Ms. Azzura smiles at me then continues walking in the other direction. “Pranks”, as they call them here, are just traps we girls use to help ourselves move up the ranks at the cost of the other girl moving down in rank. These pranks could be anything ranging from an actual pie in the face type prank to messing up their decorations. This is especially bad if it’s their decoration that failed to-trap-a rude guest. If a girl is caught making a prank, then they are penalized for it, however, mistresses and girls of high rank can suggest them in whispers to girls of lower rank, so that they mix things up in the ranks of the girls to see how hard they’ll work to get to the top.
It's a sickening thing that has ended in the deaths of several girls because if one dies, then another can move up in rank. I’m not going to cause trouble for Vera. I’m going to see what trouble I can cause for Azzura. Since she knows I’m going to be doing something, she wouldn’t mind if I’m not at her station. I go straight for her office to find it completely empty. Her guards aren’t here for some reason. They’re usually here to prevent the higher-ranked girls from “pranking” her. She has a bookshelf here with various kinds of fiction and teaching books to help her be a better mistress. Another bookshelf has the files of all the girls that are alive along with those that are dead. There must be more here since her file isn’t here. Maybe one of these files is a secret lever. Ah! The file on the last mistress.
The bookcase moves aside to reveal a small room with more bookcases and a separate dress room next to it. These files detail the punishments and rules that all maids and butlers must follow. There are also these other files that blur my vision for some reason as I try to look through them. Where’s the dirt on Azzura? Oh, what’s this? This seems to be a personal diary of Azzura. Huh? Is that the alarm? Nera could be in trouble. What am I going to do? Dang it. I quickly head out to where the alarm sound to coming from to see…Ms. Nera has recruited another butler!
Everyone is cheering for her. This is a big promotion for her. Not many girls can convince people to work here on their own. Why is she doing this? Did she give up and lose control of herself? Ah! I’ve triggered a-trap! A pie hit me in the face when I passed by a jack in the box. Who set that for me?! These traps are only activated when certain people pass them whether they’d be workers or guests.
Everyone is laughing at me now, even the new girl.
“Hahahaha!”
I can’t-I can’t help but laugh too.
“Hahahaha!”
Huh? Ms. Nera is coming this way.
“It had to be done. Trust me,” she whispers in my ear.
“What? What are you talking about?”
“We’ll talk about it later.”
She’s walking away. What’s with her? What did she mean by that?

Bright Moon, Burning Sun: Chapter 5 – Bringing Light to the Darkness

He who sings well prays twice.”
-          St. Augustine
Chapter 5 – Bringing Light to the Darkness
“Were you expecting us?” Luna asks.
“Maybe not you exactly but a couple, who loves each other, with the sun and moon in their eyes.”
“We came here for answers. Can you tell us why you were expecting us?”
“Of course, it’s the least I can give you for risking your lives to come here. I was expecting you because God told me in a dream that the last couple who loved each other would come to me, so I can help you save the world.”
“We’re not a couple.”
“Oh, but you are. The world was more sinful than it was before the first flood, so the devil said that if you two were to forget each other then stop loving each other, then God would be free to execute the rest of humanity and send them to Hell so that the saved can inherit the earth.”
“We were chosen to see if humanity was still worth saving?”
“Yes, and it looks like God chose right, as if He could’ve ever chosen wrong.”
“We also forgot that we were together?” Solare asks.
“Yes, that was to see if you would still love each other when you would meet again, and it looks like to me that you still do. You’ve probably even shown it to each other without knowing. Have you sung to each other without knowing? You two sounded very experienced in singing with each other when you sang those two times.”
Solare and Luna look at each other for a few moments.
“I know this must be a bit shocking for both of you to hear all of this, but it’s true.”
“I guess. Will we remember our past with each other? I don’t remember being with Solare.”
“I assume so.”
“What about our abilities? What do we have to do with the sun and moon?”
“The powers of the sun and moon were put into you. You had to be put into a deep sleep so that your body and mind could adapt to it. With the love you have, you must sacrifice your eyes so that the moon and sun can reappear in the sky and stop the endless rain.”
“Sacrifice our eyes? Why that?” Solare asks.
“It’s something of extreme value and a way to show your love for the world.”
“Why would we show our love for the world if it’s their fault for doing this to themselves and to us?”
“Because we both live in it,” Luna says, “If we’re supposed to sacrifice our eyes so that we can continue to live with each other, then I’ll do it.”
“…I almost want to wish I didn’t have a weakness to your hopeful attitude. Okay, we’ll do what is asked of us for the love of God, others, and each other.”
“I knew you would say that! You two are truly blessed!”
“What part do you play in all of this?” Luna asks.
“I was one of the worst sinners in the world. Before I become a priest of God, I was a slave of Satan that used rituals to give worldly power to the country I served. That was until the flood happened and almost killed me. This was when my eyes were open, and God gave me my mission of surviving to tell you of your purpose and do the ritual to remove your eyes.”
“You’re going to cut out our eyes?” Solare nervously asks.
“Oh, no, I’m just going to say the prayers in Latin. Your eyes will be removed after the ritual is complete.”
“What do we need to do?”
“We need to get to the surface and be on top of a building. There you will sing a song and dance together as I conduct the ritual.”
“Won’t we be attacked by the black birds?”
“Your music and dance will debilitate them. They won’t be able to touch you.”
“What about the black birds themselves? Where did they come from?”
“I assume they’re demons born from the darkness of mankind’s sin. That’s just my guess though.”
“Well, that’s all the questions I have. What about you, Solare?”
“I’d just like to get this over with.”
“That’s good. Let’s get moving. Who knows how many souls we can save if we move quickly?”
“Oh, what’s your name?”
“You can call me Father Popov.”
Father Popov takes his weapons as he leaves his shelter with Solare and Luna.
He then asks, “Did you come across any trouble in the sewers?”
“Yes,” Solare says, “There was this giant crow with eyes on its back and it shot out acid from its stomach.”
“Oh yes, that beast. It’s one of the deadliest black birds out there as it soaked cities in acidic rain back when it still flew in the skies.”
“What’s it doing down here?”
“It must’ve gone after me because it knew my purpose. Thankfully the military forces of the world managed to damage its wings to the point where it can barely fly. It can no longer spew acid from its mouth thanks to me when I threw all of my explosives down its throat.”
“Wow. All I can do is push it back with my heat beams.”
“Heat beams?”
“I can shoot out beams of heat out of my mouth.”
“And I can control running bodies of water.”
“God has truly given you the abilities you need to survive this drowned world.”
“We only recently discovered them. It’s not like we knew we had them. We weren’t even told or given a hint that we had them.”
“Still, it’s a great blessing.”
“If you say so. Are there any exits out of the sewers?”
“Did you come from the hole in the skyscraper?”
“Yes.”
“That’s the one I’ve used the most by climbing it with a grappling hook, but there is another that we can use thanks to your blessings.”
“What about the crow?”
“It will be dealt with soon enough. Luna, clear the sewer water below. Solare, use your heat to cut an entrance through the large sewer grate.”
“Won’t the crow come after us?”
“If my plan works out, then it shouldn’t be a problem. If not, then we should be able to push it back to the exit, but that will be incredibly difficult.”
“Okay, we’re trusting you. Right, Solare.”
“I don’t have any other plan, so I do.”
After doing what Father Popov says, the two are led into another section of the sewer. They then hear the crow coming after them.
“It’s coming!” Solare says as he readies his heat beam.
“We have to run ahead. Hurry!” Father Popov says as he leads them down a large sewer pipe.
The three defend themselves from the crow until they reach a dead end with a large sewer grate blocking their way.
“Blow open that sewer grate and the ceiling above us!” Father Popov says.
“But the water pressure will kill us! I can’t control two streams of water at once!”
“They’ll become one stream of water when they combine, won’t they?”
“Um, I guess you’re right. Are you ready, Solare?”
“I’m only ready if you are. I may be able to blow open the ceiling and grate, but I can’t handle water pressure.”
“Okay, I’m ready! Do it!”
Solare shoots a heat beam to destroy the ceiling. The large flood of water goes over the three and hits the crow dead on, but the crow wades through the water. Solare then shoots a heat beam at the sewer grate to form one large torrent of water that crushes the crow and overflows the sewers and causes damage to the rest of the city as a result.
“Wow! That worked out great, father!” Luna says.
“It worked out better than I expected. It’s a shame the city suffered so much damaged, but that is something we’ll have to deal with later.”
The rubble has created a way up to the surface that Solare, Luna, and Father Popov use to climb to the street level.  They make their way to the nearest building to reach the rooftops. On the rooftops, Father Popov opens his prayer book.
“Do you two know any song you would like to sing?”
“Does it have to be anything in particular for the ritual to work?” Luna asks.
“It has to be a song of love. I have several here if you need one.”
“Hmm. I think I know a good one.”
“Okay. Just remember to keep up your singing and dancing because the birds are coming.”
“Right. Are you ready, Solare?”
“I’m ready if you are.”
“Okay. Here we go.”
As Father Popov begins the prayer, Solare and Luna feel a familiar and strong connection that allows them to sing in sync.

“With you, I'm the best person I can be
You complete who I am
Even in this dark and dreary world,
We can make it together

The two of us are like two pieces of a puzzle
Separate we are nothing
But together we make a beautiful picture

We are like the heat and cold
Light and dark
Without you, there's no reason for me to exist

With you, I'm complete
Without you, I am nothing
Stay with me forever
And I'll forever dedicate myself to you”

The black birds are unable to attack much less concentrate with Solare and Luna’s singing and dancing and Father Popov’s prayers. Some even fall out of the sky and few barely make it to the building they’re on.

“The two of us are like the light and dark
Heat and cold
Nothing is right when we're apart

Holding your hands like this fills me with hope
Dancing with you makes my heart dance with joy
Being with you is all I need

With you, I'm complete
Without you, I am nothing
Stay with me forever
And I'll forever dedicate myself to you

With you, I'm complete
Without you, I am nothing
Stay with me forever
And I'll forever dedicate myself to you

To you, I'll always be united
To you, I'll always be dedicated
To you, my heart will always be
With you, will always be my reason for living”

Once the song and prayer end, the black birds disintegrate into ash. Solare and Luna’s appearances change back to their normal ones as they regain their old memories. The sun and the moon reappear in the sky as a new dawn arises. The rain in the sky ceases as the clouds disappear and the raging waters below dry up. Despite not being able to see each other, Solare and Luna can feel each other’s presence and kiss each other.
“True love comes to purify the world again,” Father Popov says aloud.

Bright Moon, Burning Sun: Chapter 4 – Searching for Hope

Chapter 4 – Searching for Hope
“These sewers are bigger than I expected,” Luna says, “I can’t even see the ceiling. It’s a good thing you’re here with me otherwise, I’d be in complete darkness.”
“Thanks for thinking of me as your candle.”
“I’d like to think of you as my light in the darkness in more than one way.”
“What do you mean?”
“You give me hope. Everyone, besides the man from before and you, have either ignored or abandoned me. You’re probably the only nice person left in the world.”
“I’m the nicest person? You’re the one who goes out of her way to help others and is always hoping for a better future.”
“I’m just doing what I’m supposed to.”
“Yeah, I know. It’s better to hold onto hope than give into despair. I’ve heard you say it before.”
The echoing sounds of something stomping in the sewers interrupts them.
“What was that?”
“Maybe there are black birds down here. Dang it, I stick out like a sore thumb. Sorry.”
“It’s fine. It’s better to see than to not. We just have to hurry. It’s a good thing the way forward is straight.”
“Yeah and it’s a good thing it doesn’t smell too bad in here.”
“I hear the stomping getting closer. It sounds like there’s only one bird in here.”
“That’s good, but it sounds big.”
The sounds of stomping stop, so Solare and Luna stop walking too as they wait to hear what the bird will do. They can hear the bird breathing and smelling its surroundings. It then makes a hissing noise before going further away from them. Solare and Luna don’t move until they feel comfortable. They stay silent and move slowly while continuing forward and watching their surroundings. The sounds of something scraping against metal. It’s faint but worrying since the two don’t know what is happening. The noises are inconsistent then completely stop. The two keep looking around until they finally see what’s causing it.
A giant crow is hanging from the ceiling. Its wings have claw-like bones at the end that it uses to help it stick to the ceiling along with its claws. Eyes line the back and wings of the crow that are looking around in the dark until they all focus on Solare and Luna. The crow then falls to the sewer water below to reveal the boils on its skin that pops to squirt out acidic liquids. Luna blocks the acid with the sewer water and Solare counterattacks with a heat beam that pushes the crow back, however, it doesn’t cause it any physical damage.
“We have to run!” Solare says.
The crow then flies up into the air and rains down its acid on them. Solare covers Luna and himself with his fiery cloak for protection. The acid doesn’t melt when it gets near him unlike the rain outside and it starts to burn through his cloak. Luna adds an additional layer of cover with sewer water that she uses against the crow that makes it fall. Solare then fires a heat beam at it that pushes it far away. Still undamaged by their attacks the crow pushes on. The two use their distance to their advantage as they run as fast as they can while keeping back the crow together. They keep running until they reach a single door that the crow is unable to go through. It then uses its large beak to try to pull them out and tries to spit out acid, but only spits out a bit. Solare fires a constant beam at it until it gives up and goes away.
“Yeah, that’s right. You better run off,” Solare says in a tired voice.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah. That last beam of energy took a lot out of me. I guess I can’t push myself too much.”
“Of course you can’t.”
“Right. Let’s keep going.”
The hallway they find themselves in leads to a singular reinforced door with another microphone with a message to sing a song again, but this one mentions singing together.
“What’s it with this guy wanting us to sing?” Solare says.
“I don’t know, but we have to do it. You seemed to enjoy singing last time. We even danced together even though we didn’t need to.”
“Yeah-well, I don’t know what I was doing. Do you know something that we could sing together?”
“I have something in mind. Are we going to dance again?”
“Uh, if you want to.”
“Okay then. Follow my lead.

The rain soaks you through and through like your pain
Who can blame you for feeling weak?
The neverending storm of life seems unbearable
Who can blame you for your tears?

Everyone eventually falls
Everyone eventually makes mistakes
When no one is there to pick you up,
Hope seems distant and impossible

I am here for you
To love you when no one else will
When you feel alone
When you feel lost
Take my hand and I won't let you go

I will show you hope
I will show you love
I may be like everyone else
But I won't let you down

Even the strong eventually fall,
The wise are left clueless,
And the dedicated lose their sense of purpose.
When the rain is endless like the pains of life, even the best of us lose ourselves

I am here for you
To love you when no one else will
When you feel alone
When you feel lost
Take my hand and I won't let you go

Hold tight and don't let go!
Don't let them get to you
Stand strong!
Be the better person

I am here for you
To love you when no one else will
When you feel alone
When you feel lost
Take my hand and I won't let you go

Take my hand and I won't let you go
Take my hand and I won't ever betray you
Take my hand and I will always protect you
Take my hand and I will always be with you”

After they stop singing, they can’t help but hug each other. The door opens to reveal a dimly lit room with an armored man with crosses and other Catholic imagery on his armor sitting with a shotgun and assault rifle in his hands.
He drops his guns, removes his mask, stands up, and says, “Alleluia. You’re finally here!”

Bright Moon, Burning Sun: Chapter 3 – Conflict Builds Character

Chapter 3 – Conflict Builds Character
The man, Solare, and Luna quickly walk away from the scene of the fight while making their way through the ruins of the city.
“Come on you two, we still have a ways to go,” the man says.
“How come we’re moving so fast?” Luna asks as she struggles to keep up.
“The black birds tend to not let their prey get away from them. They retreat, regroup, and come back with more birds to get what they want.”
“Where do they come from?”
“I don’t know, but I’m sure if the military was still alive, then they would’ve done something about them if the birds didn’t destroy them.”
“Are there any in the sewers?”
“None that I’ve heard of, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any. The birds like to follow their prey and I know people tried to live in the sewers because it provided shelter against the birds in the sky.”
Behind them, a black bird catches sight of them and screeches.
“They found us! We’re going to have to take a longer way to lose them.”
The man, Solare, and Luna run deeper into a crumbling and connected series of buildings as a swarm of black birds descends upon them. The buildings give them cover since most of it is destroyed, but this rubble also makes it difficult to navigate for the three. Its structure is also crumbling due to the constant rain and the previous fights that have happened here, and the damage being done to it by the black birds is making it fall faster. Solare uses his cloak of fire to light up everything around him.
“Why are you doing that for?” the man asks.
“To burn the path behind us so they can’t follow us.”
“Good idea!”
The fires begin to consume the buildings and kill whatever black birds are trapped within them, however, the fires also break down the building even more and make it tilt over to the side.
“Hurry before the building collapses!”
Once they’re outside of the building, they see eight or more black birds going into the previous building they were in with more flying in that screech to notify the others that their prey is outside. As the connecting makeshift bridges begin to fall, the three make a jump to another building. A black bird from behind them manages to grab onto the man and take him away with a couple others so he doesn’t escape.
“The entrance to the sewers isn’t too far from here! Agh! It’s below that skyscraper! Hurry!”
Luna turns back to watch him be carried off as Solare grabs her hand and urges her forward.
“There’s nothing we can do for him!”
“I’m sorry!”
“Don’t worry about me! Just go!”
Solare and Luna try to escape the birds, but they are quickly surrounded. Unsure of where to go, Luna moves around to look for an opening and accidentally steps on a fragile part of the roof that starts to fall when she steps on it.
“Don’t move!” Solare says as he starts firing arrows at the approaching black birds and moving towards Luna to pull her away from the collapsing roof.
The roof is unable to stay together and makes Luna fall to the raging waters below. Solare reaches out and jumps after her.
“Luna!”
Luna braces herself for the fall, however, the water catches her and gently lets her down to the ground.
“Oh, great…” Solare says as he’s plummeting to the ground.
Luna reaches up ready to catch Solare when her veins suddenly become blue as the waters catch Solare and gently let him down on the ground.
“Ow, ow, ow!” Solare says as the water touches him.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, it’s just that when a constant stream of water touches me, I feel pain. Look out!”
The black birds begin descending upon the two, so Luna uses the water to catch them in the sky and drown them. Seeing what happened, the other black birds retreat.
“Wow. I thought you’d just hit them with it, not drown them.”
“What? Too much?”
“No, not really. Just remind me not to mess with you.”
“So, if getting hit with a lot of water hurts you, then why did jump after me?”
“I don’t know. It was reactionary. I didn’t want to lose you.”
Luna reaches out her arms to hug Solare.
“Wait, you’re going to hurt yourself!”
But when Luna hugs Solare, she isn’t harmed by his flames.
“Thank you, Solare.”
“Yeah, don’t mention it.”
Solare hugs her back. The two then walk towards the skyscraper as the water clears around them. Along the way, they find a sewer grate.
“Maybe this could be an easy way in,” Solare says as he opens it to find the sewers flooded. “Figures. Can you get the water in the sewer to stop running?”
“I can try.”
Luna tries to get the sewer water to recede. The sewer water does recede, but the water around them starts to close in.
“Hey, hey, stop! It doesn’t look like you can control two different flows of water. We’re going to have to use the skyscraper entrance.”
“That’s probably better and not flooded.”
“I hope it’s not.”
Getting closer to the skyscraper reveals that the front entrance is blocked by flood-resistant barricades that Luna’s water cannot break through. Solare tries to melt the barricades with his heat, but the barricade refuses to break.
“That’s some strong pre-flood metal,” Solare says, “We’re going to have to enter through the bridges that go into the buildings.’
The two are forced to go through a nearby building that’s blocked by rubble, but Luna’s water is able to remove it. After making it through the mess in the building, they make it into the skyscraper. It’s a dark place with barricades covering the windows. Despite the damage it’s suffered on the outside, the skyscraper is mostly clean. Going deeper into it, Luna and Solare find black owls against the walls. They have their wings and eyes closed and appear to be immobile.
“These must be the black birds guarding the entrance. I wonder what makes them so special,” Solare asks as he thinks about what to do about them.
Luna takes a piece of food she has and throws it near the owls. One suddenly wakes up, opens its wings to reveal the mouth in its body as a tongue catches the food, and quickly draws it in and closes in an instant.
“It looks like they sense when their food is close by then immediately catches it and eats it,” Luna says, “All we have to do is keep our distance from them.”
“That’s easier said than done. We don’t even know if they’ll move and they’re blocking certain ways forward.”
“Well, we’re just going to have to be careful.”
Solare and Luna make their way down through the skyscraper while avoiding getting close. They get to a certain point where the owls are blocking every way forward, so they go back only to find that the owls have changed their positions.
“They’ve moved,” Luna notes.
“I had a feeling they would.”
The two continue their way through the building only to have the owls block the way forward again and for them to go back and find the owls in different positions again.
“I’m getting sick of these stupid birds,” Solare says before he uses an arrow against an owl.
The arrow bounces off the owl as if it hit metal. All the owls then turn their heads towards the two and follow their movements. When they look behind them, the two find the owls behind them are closer.
“We’re cornered!” Solare says while Luna tries to use her water-powers to break into the building.
“I can’t do anything, Solare. You have to use your power.”
“What power? All I can do is burn everything I touch.”
“You have to be able to do something more.”
“Argh! I’ll try. Come on!”
Solare builds a heated energy within his chest before moving his mask up to release a beam of heat out of his mouth and at an owl that shatters it.
“Wow! That was amazing, Solare!”
The owls then begin to mobilize with their exposed mouths after what Solare did.
“We have to move!”
Solare clears the way forward with his heat beams as the owls chase them. The two eventually come to a hole in the ground that leads to darkness. With no other way to go, they jump down and land in the sewers with the water surrounding Luna catching her then Solare. The owls look down the hole and decide not to follow. Instead, they close themselves up and stand guard over it.
“That’s bad. The only exit we know about is blocked off,” Solare says.
“Maybe the guy we’re looking for knows another way out.”
“I hope so.”
Luna and Solare climb out of the place where the sewer water ran and follow a path that leads to a mechanical gate. It has a communication device with the words, “sing a song to activate the door”.
“What’s it with people wanting us to sing songs for them?” Solare asks aloud, “Do you know any songs to sing?”
“I do. Do you want to sing it with me?”
“I don’t know. What’s it called?”
“I forgot the name, but maybe the lyrics will help you remember.”
“Okay. Then sing it.”

“I was wrong from the start
I tried to make everything fit my own truth
Now it's all different
You've given me a new view on life

Good things in life are hard to find
So I refuse to lose you
Can we rekindle what we lost?

Let's try again and do it right
You can fail and I'll always forgive you
Let's try again but better
I can rely on you to be strong when I'm not

The weak part of me is dead and gone
This love may kill me but it kills the selfish me
Let's try again and Rekindle Our Love”

Solare remembers the song after hearing the chorus of the song and begins to sing along with Luna much to her delight.

“Before I used to be selfish
I pretended to be strong and smart to make up for my weakness
Now it's all different
You've erased that part of me

Don't let the past weigh us down
Don't let our mistakes be what we remember
Don't let a misunderstanding be your view of me
Good things in life are hard to find
So I refuse to lose you
Can we rekindle what we lost?

Let's try again and do it right
You can fail and I'll always forgive you
Let's try again but better
I can rely on you to be strong when I'm not”

Before they know it, Solare and Luna are dancing together almost instinctively. They enjoy dancing and singing, so they continue.

“The weak part of me is dead and gone
This love may kill me but it kills the selfish me
Let's try again and Rekindle Our Love

I won't let you go
Let's try this again, let's work this out
Don't let me go
Let's try again and do it right
You can fail and I'll always forgive you
Let's try again but better
I can rely on you to be strong when I'm not

The weak part of me is dead and gone
This love may kill me but it kills the selfish me
Let's try again and Rekindle Our Love”

Once the song is over, they embrace, and the door opens. The intoxication of the song wears off and they let go and stare off to the side awkwardly, but with smiles on their faces.
“Umm. We should go,” Solare says.
“Oh, yeah.”
The two continue on with a warm and weirdly familiar feeling they are now taking note of.
