My Love, My Sweet Burden (Text Only) Chapter 1 – Unexpected Love and Lover

Chapter 1 – Unexpected Love and Lover

During one of my prayers in the chapel, I hear a voice tell me of the importance of my role in the next battle with a group of traitors who are siding with pagan beastmen. The others in the chapel including a priest tell me that I have a glow to me, ask me if I heard anything, and after I tell them, the priest tells my commanders to let me fulfill whatever God has planned for me without questioning or stopping me from accomplishing it.

I have to say that I never thought I’d ever directly hear from God since I thought that the privilege was reserved for great saints and heroes. Going up to my friend, Priscilla, I repeat the same sentiment because it’s still hard for me to believe.

“It’s not too surprising, Dominic. Of course, you’d be graciously rewarded after all your hard work and dedication. I just wish I could be there to see what God has planned for you in the next battle. The commanders want to keep me here for the time being, especially with our new elf friend around. Speaking of which.”

The young elf boy we are talking about shows up behind me cloaked in black to hide his sharp ears. Priscilla found him washed up on the shore with the bodies of other elves as he was being attacked by bandits and beastmen. After saving him, we tried to ask him where he was from and who he was, but all he’d said so far was that he misses his family and that he’s lonely. I feel bad for him being the sole survivor of the wreck and that strange cut around the edges of his mouth that the beastmen made. He looks at me as he passes by. I give him a friendly smile and he runs behind Priscilla and peeks out at me with one eye.

“I’m sorry. Did I scare you?”

“Don’t worry about him. He’s shy around everyone except me since I saved him.”

“Sir Dominic! We are about to deploy.”

“I better get going too. This little man and I have a fun day ahead of us. See you later!”

“See you!” As I join the other soldiers on the horse-drawn carriage as it starts to leave the city with the other carriages and knights on horses, I regret not asking Priscilla if we can spend some time together after the battle. I’m sure she’d want to after I accomplish whatever God spoke to me directly for.

She’s such an amazing person, so amazing in fact that I think that she should’ve been the one that God talked to instead of me. I mean she was the one who saved that elf boy from the beastmen and bandits in addition to her many other accomplishments that I was there to witness that landed her a chair with the commanders. Ever since we met in our first days of training as soldiers for the Church, I felt a special connection to her, unlike anything I felt with anyone else.

“Dominic, are you fantasizing about a girl? You have the look on your face as if you do.”

“He’s probably thinking about Priscilla again. You should’ve asked her out already.”

“I’ve tried, but she’s always busy with something. The next time I have a chance to talk to her, it’ll be the first thing I ask.”

“You better act quick before that elf boy gets to her before you do. Speaking about him, has she told you anything about it besides what we already know?”

“Nope, nothing.”

“That’s a shame. You never see many people from the East here. I’d sure like to know what’s happening on the other side of the world.”

“Do you want to be the next to volunteer on the next suicidal expedition? The people from the European continent only manage to get here by the skin of their teeth because of monsters in the sea and the wreckage of the space sailing ships of the past.”

I tune out the conversations in the carriage as we near our destination and pray to God for my instruction. Almost immediately, I hear that I should go by myself to the east side of the walls of the stronghold before the battle starts. Since my commanders already know to trust me, they let me do this, so I sneak up to the walls by myself as instructed. Okay, now what, Lord? Again, I am given my instructions almost immediately as I hear that I’m meant to be in a relationship with the girl with pink eyes and curly hair. Once she’s with me and we escape the walls, the Church will easily have victory over these traitors.

Did I hear that correctly? A woman up there is my wife-to-be? Then that would mean my plans to be with Priscilla were in vain and me being delusionally in love with a woman who I was never meant to be with.

Well, if you say so, Lord. You know better than I do so let it be so according to Your word.

Taking out a piece of metal from my pocket, I conjure my crossbow from it. I load in a rope bolt to it, fire it at the wall, and climb up. I take it easy and slow as I sneak around the walls and look for the woman with pink eyes and curly hair. Thanks to my special vision due to being born an archer I can see clearly across vast distances. This woman must be really important if the battle will be easily won without her. Perhaps she’s some tough commander or inspiring soldier like Priscilla. Maybe she’s only defending these traitors because she was forced to. I heard that some of the people living in this stronghold were faithful, but once the beastmen took over, they forced people to serve them or face a painful death or torture.

On the other hand, maybe she is a beastman or a willing servant of them. Please, Lord, give me the strength to convert her heart if that’s the case. Okay, okay. I gotta stop thinking about what she could be and concentrate on finding her. While looking around, I’ve only been able to find one woman with pink eyes and curly hair, but is that really her?

Even after waiting some time, I see that no other person who patrols the walls has pink eyes or curly hair so it must be. The woman I’m looking at is also an archer with a bow of her own, but she also doesn’t seem to be taking her responsibility seriously and looks to be talking to herself while looking up at the night sky. Well, maybe there’s something important about her such as being the daughter of an important leader here. She’s heading this way so I hide in the shadows until she reaches me, which is when I grab her and take her out of plain sight.

“Oh, thank you for the surprise hug. I really needed it.”

Huh? Is she serious? “No, this isn’t a surprise hug? I’m from the Church here to take you away from here. My name is Dominic.”

“Really? I’m glad you are since these beastmen are vicious and really mean. Why did you have to specifically get me? My name is Persephone, by the way.”

“Because God told me to since you’re my wife-to-be.”

“What?! That means you’re going to be my husband and we’re going to have children and we’re going to live together forever! Are you going to propose to me on one knee now?”

“Sorry, but this was sudden for me too, so I didn’t have a chance to get a wedding ring.”

“That’s okay. We can get that later,” Persephone says before kissing me on the cheek.

“Huh? What was that for?”

“It’s what couples do, don’t they?”

“Yeah, but we just met.” Something feels as if it was just stolen from me. No, no, no. I shouldn’t worry about who gave me my first kiss. It’s just a temptation from demons. This woman is going to be my wife.

“I’m sorry. I’ll hug you then since you hugged me.”

This woman is already starting to be a bit much for me to handle. I guess I have to be more patient than usual. “Let’s get out of here before someone notices.”

“Yeah! Let’s get out of here, but I’m sure someone already noticed.”

All the more reason to go then. Sure enough, as we’re leaving, beastmen and archers notice and start chasing after us. We both descend down the rope I climbed, run into the nearby forest, and keep running until we outrun and are a far enough distance from the stronghold.

“Hey, um. What are we waiting here for?”

“To get those defenders away from the walls so that my allies can easily overtake the stronghold.”

“Ah, I see! That was a smart idea!”

“It wasn’t mine, it was God’s and you played your part in it by coming with me. You must’ve been important to the beastmen’s defenses.”

“Really? I’m not that good of an archer despite being born one. Those people I see in the distance who are chasing us are better fighters than me.”

Are you serious? Anyway, I find a large tree and bushes for us to hide in and hold Persephone close to me so that she’s hidden as well. The beastmen that are chasing us do look tough. As they pass by us, I see even clearer that they’re heavily armed with large axes and clubs and wear heavy armor with very few weak points in them. It’s a good thing we can just wait for them to pass-

Before I even realize it, Persephone gives me another kiss on the cheek, which is loud enough to attract the attention of the beastmen who look in our direction.

“Are you serious?!” I loudly whisper as I lose my temper.

“I’m sorry, I just thought it was why you were holding me.”

“I-! Whatever, just get your bow out. We have a fight on our hands.”

“Yes, sir!” I watch as Persephone takes a piece of metal out of her pocket and conjures her bow. She then begins to wildly shoot her arrows at the beastmen that explode in mid-air after a few seconds. Her fire rate is that of fireworks during a New Year's celebration and just as accurate at hitting things. At least it’s a good distraction so I direct her towards certain targets so I can get good shots in, and thanks be to God that it works allowing us to defeat the beastmen with not too much difficulty other than Persephone almost blowing me up a couple of times.

“Good job. I wouldn’t have been able to beat them without your help.”

“Really? I’m glad to have been so useful for once!”

“It’s no wonder why God wanted me to get you off those walls. You would’ve done severe damage to groups of soldiers with that wild firing of yours.”

“Yeah, I guess I am just a good archer in my own way. Thank you!”

I didn’t really mean it as a compliment, but I’ll let her have it and she is right in a way. We don’t have much time to relax since the commotion caused by the fighting and Persephone’s explosive arrows attracted the attention of the other beastmen that we were running from.

“I know my way through the forest and the quickest way to the next town. Let me take the lead this time, husband.”

“We’re not officially married yet, but sure, take the lead.” While Persephone happily leads us through the forest, I begin to think about our future together. I’ll definitely have to be the one to steer us in the right direction most of the time, but I have a feeling I could get used to her ditziness, or at least I hope I do.

All the Salvation Through stories are now in one special edition!

In death, there is salvation. Blessed are those who wage war and hate the sin within themselves and others. The search for truth is nothing more than the search for the living truth that is God. These sayings are from the respective kingdoms of Corvus, Canis, and Polypus. Each story in this collection follows a character from these kingdoms on their journeys in a post-apocalyptic, dark fantasy world.

From the deadlands of Corvus, Dunmire travels to kill a part of himself that's weak. Freya, from the firey lands of Canis, travels to become a soldier while aided by her beloved teacher and Jigna from the icy, magical, and ever-shifting lands of Polypus studies and travels to find her place in the world.

The search for truth is nothing more than the search for God. Jigna is from the icy, magical, and ever-shifting lands of Polypus, which is also known for its many libraries and knowledgeable people. Just like everyone else, she reads, studies, and travels to learn about her place in the world and what role God has for her.

Salvation Through Surrender: Chapter 3 – Answers in Expected Places

Chapter 3 – Answers in Expected Places

The deepest depth of the library is mist and lit up by torches with blue cold flames on them. It’s strangely quiet and vacant down here. I’m pretty sure others were given the privilege to come down here since I wasn’t the only one who helped the librarians. Looking through the books, I find a mix of the books I've already read plus some other ones on the nature of truth, metaphysics, political conflicts, theories on magic, and some other random books. I wonder why this stuff is all disorganized compared to the neatly organized library above.

“That’s because all of these books are tailored towards you,” I hear a voice in the mist say.

A librarian who looks different than the others appears out of the mist. This one only has tentacles for his right arm and legs while his face and left hand is skeletal. Speaking of his face, it’s split open down the center with a singular large yellow eye in the center of it. The eye with a triangle for an iris on his left hand faintly glows.

“My appearance is due to all the knowledge I have obtained, which is far beyond that of even the librarians on the upper floors. My name is Najib.  As to the exact reason why God chooses to put me in this form is beyond my understanding,” the man continues to say.

Ah, of course, he can read my mind. I should’ve expected it.

“We can have this conversation entirely like this if you wish.” Or perhaps would you like it to be in your mind? I already know your thoughts such as the one about Ishank wanting to talk and get together with the rest of the librarians. Silly old fool should already know that the librarians know what the others are thinking.

“No, talking normally is fine. It feels rude to have you use your magic so we can talk.”

“Not at all, Jigna. I’ve heard what you’ve done and I thank you for helping to bring peace to this library. This place is empty to your eyes because you’ve been transported to a small pocket dimension where we can speak and show you the books that pertain to your interests in private. The others who came down here are in their own dimensions while those who come down here without permission are instantly transported back upstairs once their foot touches the floor.”

“Teleportation magic. I’ve heard the most skilled mages were able to use it, but I never found a book on how to use it.”

“That’s because the information is kept in the most secure places of the most fortified libraries in the kingdom. In addition, you’ll have to prove to the Church that you’re trustworthy enough to use it. I can see with this book selection that there are copies of the books in this library that you have an interest in learning about magic. It’s also very scattered, which is why it appears to be so disorganized.”

“I am unsure of where to take my life. That’s why I’m here.”

“Then let me see how I can help. There should be a common theme between all these books. Let’s see here. There are books on discernment of being in a relationship or consecrated to God and it looks like you’re leaning more towards being married. In terms of magic, there’s no specified field either than wanting to learn the nature of it, which is good.”

“Why’s that?”

“The power-hungry want to use magic for anything other than its God-given purpose. That is why they can’t always wield it properly, can’t use it at all, or aren’t able to use it in the way they wish. Those poor souls typically resort to selling their souls and using satanic spells in the end if their desires to use magic aren’t corrected. Anyway, back to you. Ah! Books on the current day and past mysteries are here too. They’re a personal favorite of mine as well.”

“Do you have any recommendations?”

“It looks like you’re reading most of my favorites. There are some that I haven’t gotten to yet such as a book on the Ignited, grace-starved, Hands of God, and…Lusty Lizardwomen?”

“Huh?”

“Let’s see here…beastmen, takes men, women, and children away by night, seductive, use magic through their voice…Men have such strange tastes.”

“What’s that book doing there?”

“It’s another mystery book and it’s about a particular kind of beastman. It must be a new book that got added to the library judging from me never seeing it and the publication date being this year.”

“So, what do you think?”

“I think there’s a definite direction you’re heading in, but if you want to narrow it further, I can show you to the most important room in this library which is the source of all the truth in it.”

“Yes, please show me to it.”

“Very well.”

Without even moving, the room shifts around us until Najib and I are standing outside a room. The door to the room opens by itself and inside of it is an adoration chapel.

“Of course it would be,” I say to myself.

“Of course. I sense some small bits of disappointment from you.”

“I’m fine.”

“Let God speak to you in the silence and you’ll know for sure what path to take in your life. I’ll leave you alone for the time being.”

I kneel in front of the monstrance, and say, “Lord, you’ve brought me out here for a reason to help me discover my role in Your plan. I am as ignorant now as I was before and know that no matter how much I learn, I will never know everything and forget the truth, especially when I sin. Fill my mind will Your presence and reveal to me the secrets of Your heart. As in all things, I surrender my will and pride to You. Make me humble. Make me wise. Make me Your faithful servant. Make me Yours.”

As I silently pray, I push out intrusive thoughts so that my mind is completely clear. After an unknown amount of minutes or maybe hours pass, I feel a revelation come to my mind as if I just realized something. I begin to hear the soft music that comprises reality and what makes all of reality work in tandem with one another. In my mind’s eye, reality tears apart until it is all nothing but words describing the truth of each object. It’s an almost maddening experience because of how much singing is going on along with the disruptions in it that are caused by fallen men and demons, however, the disruptions are ironed over by the heavenly singing and somehow enhanced by doing so. Everything continues to unravel until finally a singular truth is revealed to me between the lines of every truth that exists.

“I love you,” I hear in a voice that sounds almost familiar to me.

It’s a voice that I heard in my family, friends, and friendly strangers. These same two words are repeated over and over again in every good action and exist in every truth. Reality puts itself back together as I continue to hear “I love you” over and over again until I wake up and see that I’m still in the adoration chapel. I can hear a final “I love you” come from the monstrance before everything goes quiet. Najib opens the door and doesn’t say anything to me at first as he looks at me. He then conjures a mirror made of ice. In the reflection of the mirror. I see that all the eyes in my head have come together in the cross-shaped cut in my forehead to form a singular golden eye with a triangular iris.

“Congratulations on reaching enlightenment. I trust that you now know what you want to do,” Najib says.

“I do,” I say.

I go to the university back home and apply for the role of a librarian with the approval of the librarians I’ve met such as Najib and his fellow coworkers who gave me a glowing recommendation. Because of them and the fact that I helped protect a library, I am immediately accepted and stationed at a library close to home. My family is proud of what I’ve accomplished, throws a party for me, and promises to visit the library when they can. Thank you, God, for helping me to get where I belong. Now, I can contemplate You through knowledge and truth for the rest of my life.

While working one day, a visitor catches my attention. He’s a man from Canis. The man is dressed in heavy coats and armor and is warmed further through a flame spell. His skin is tan, his eyes are orange and yellow, and he’s middle-aged judging from his face. As he looks through the books, I fly over from one of the higher floors to him. My flying gets his attention and I seem to amaze him.

“Do you need any help?” I ask.

“No. No, ma’am,” he says.

“What’s a man like you from Canis doing here?”

“I was ‘honorably’ kicked out from my kingdom because I wasn’t worthy of any role in the army or as a blacksmith, so I came here because I heard it was a land of knowledge and truth.”

I smile and he smiles in return. In this man, I see my next learning experience, one that I’ve been preparing for and hinted at through my studying.

“I’ve done my own search for God’s role in my life so I can help you find yours. My name is Jigna. What’s yours?”

“Kevalin.”

“That’s a name that means seeker of the absolute. It’s a wonderful and fitting name for you.”

“Thank you.”

“Now, let’s journey through truth and knowledge to find your purpose together.”

Salvation Through Surrender: Chapter 2 – Studying Truth for Different Reasons

Chapter 2 – Studying Truth for Different Reasons

The library I need to get to is in sight, but I have to keep my distance from it for the moment, as an army of ratmen is assaulting the border. I am resting next to a tiger and a leopard who are also watching the battle with me. Thanks to my special eyes, I can clearly see the army using their defensive magic against the verminous invaders. They are lined up in a formation similar to that of a chess board with icy armor symbolizing their role in battle. The pawns and knights are front in line and fight using conjured weapons and create large icicles to impale the enemy with. As for the bishops, they pray for the army and strengthen their spells, armor, and strength through these prayers. The rooks, like the bishops, play a supporting role in that they use their magic to reinforce the walls, but like the rooks and knights, are actively fighting in the battle by shifting the land to open chasms that the ratmen fall into, raising the land to block their advance, or conjure large pillars of ice to break apart the army and impale the mutated ratmen that are range from building-sized multiheaded hydra-like abominations to monsters with abnormally large muscles that are the size of elephants and have various pieces of metal in their body.

Finally, the kings and queens in the army telepathically give orders while also using their own magic to create conjured animals and soldiers completely made of ice that aid in the battle. The battle seems to be all but won as the tide of black on the horizon is pretty much gone and the rest of the ratmen are retreating. I’m about to get up and continue on to the library until I hear something cracking the ice from below near me. As I watch more places in the ground form cracks, I ready my magic anticipating the ratmen to come out of it since they’re known to dig tunnels to get under cities and defenses, and sure enough, the ratmen do but the first ratman that emerges has their face bitten off by a tiger as the animals of Polypus have come to help defend it. The elephants stomp the ratmen into mush while the lions, leopards, and tigers tear at them with their claws and mouths. Meanwhile, the cobras go down into the tunnels and drive back whatever reinforcements that make it on land.

Soon after, the animals of the land walk away as no more ratmen emerge though some of the animals stay to fill the holes that were created while the cobras slither out of them. The events of the past couple of hours are why the ratmen have never had a foothold in Polypus, unlike the other kingdoms. Even more militant kingdoms like Canis and Bernhard have ratmen somewhere in their borders, and the undead lands of Corvus also have their own issue with the ratmen despite having similar wildlife to ours. I pray that their problems are solved one day, but for now, I have my own responsibilities to attend to, so without further delay, I continue to the library. Before I can even enter the building, I approach the walls that surround it. An eye appears on the gates, looks at me, and shines a light blue light on me.

“Jigna, a citizen of Polypus,” a voice in the gate says. “You are allowed to enter. Please enjoy your time here and may you find the truth you are looking for.”

The eye on the gates disappear as they automatically open for me. Now that I’m closer to the library, I see that the buildings around it are mostly military and guard bases, tailors, blacksmiths, food vendors, and some houses that are apartments for workers, merchants, and soldiers. This settlement’s citizens are mostly comprised of those from Polypus, which isn’t surprising since we take guarding knowledge more seriously than other kingdoms. There are few people from Draco and even fewer from Phasianus who act as common workers and helpers. Phasianus has always been reluctantly subservient to Draco and it’s obvious with their behavior as I see them working with their masters.

Turning my attention to my own priorities, I look to the library and I see the tall spiraling building that seems to reach beyond the clouds. There are walls around the library that are guarded by the chess-like soldiers that I saw guarding the border and these gates have a similar security eye that shines a light on me to identify me again before letting me in.

It again says, “You are allowed to enter. Please enjoy your time here and may you find the truth you are looking for.”

I go through the gates and finally enter into the library. From the entrance, I can see most of the floors of the library with the top and bottom floors being blurry even for my vision because of how high and below they respectively are. The librarians all have tentacles for limbs, have the heads of octopuses, and have books levitating around them.

As I approach one of them to ask a question, the librarian immediately turns to me and says, “Hello! It’s so good to see another visitor who’s here to learn. What is your name, young lady?”

The man’s voice is that of a jovial old man which reminds me of my grandfather’s voice and demeanor who was always happy about something.

“My name is Jigna,” I say.

“That’s a wonderful name. Do you know that it means curiously intellectual?”

“I’ve been told.”

“Of course, of course. You appear to be a very smart young lady growing into a fine woman. My name is Ishank. What can I help you with? Can I help you find something you are looking for or are you just browsing and allowing God to guide your curiosity? There’s nothing wrong with either.”

“Now that I really think about it, I guess I’m just allowing God to guide my curiosity. I’m simply trying to learn what role He has for me to play.”

“A noble goal and one that everyone should seek if they haven’t already. May I suggest the lower levels of the library? The lower you go down the more you’ll find books on self-discovery and don’t go up unless you want to learn more about sciences, politics, history, and metaphysics.”

“Okay. Thank you for your help, Ishank.”

“Anytime. Oh, and if you talk to any of the other librarians, they’ll be happy to help you as well, tell them that I said hi and that we really need to share what we’ve learned from the floors we’ve been assigned to again.”

“I will.”

As I go down the floors, I find the sections on self-discovery I was looking for. Some of the books are written by saints, priests, psychologists, and laymen who write from their personal and professional experiences. Other books on self-discovery give their lessons through fictional stories in various different genres such as romance, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and so on. None of these hundreds of thousands of books feel as if they are calling out to me. Maybe it’s not self-discovery that I’m looking for or maybe it’s a different kind of self-discovery.

Further down, I find books on discernment. For example, there are books on how to know that you’re meant to be a parent or priest if you should be a writer, the signs that you’re meant to be a soldier, and more all of which range from nonfiction to fiction just like the other books above. I have thought about becoming a mother though I don’t have a man in mind that I’d like to marry. While reading one of the books, I see that it says men will see themselves as the priest on the altar and both men and women will see themselves in the roles of the families they come across. Maybe I am meant to be a mother because I have seen myself in the role of the mothers I come across.

Another book that I find on consecrated virgins does make me question becoming a mother since it mentions that this role is for those who know that they should neither become a mother nor a nun but should still dedicate themselves to God in a special way. Hmm. Maybe I’m jumping to conclusions because I don’t know for sure what’s right for me. Didn’t I just think I could be a mother because I saw myself in the role of the mothers I saw? My mind is starting to scramble because of all the reading I’m doing so I take a seat on a nearby bench. While resting, I smell food further down the library and go down to find a cafeteria of sorts with people eating and reading inside of it.

Food sounds like a good idea so I buy a meal that consists of chicken and tomatoes. It also comes with a glass of wine and ice-cold water that complement it well. While eating, I look around at what everyone is reading. One of the books that catches my eye is a book on magical spells. Perhaps I’m meant to be a soldier, guard, or one of the people who keep the kingdom in one piece. I’ve always been interested in expanding my repertoire of spells but then again, who doesn’t? Besides, the more powerful spells a person knows, the more they are tempted to use them for their own selfish gain.

Still, my interest in knowing more spells makes me head for the section of the library containing them, which is the most crowded place in the entire library and doesn’t surprise me in the least bit. The magic section of every library I’ve visited has been the most crowded because both natives of Polypus and foreigners are interested in the arcane to learn how to cast spells or just read about them. Since it’s too crowded for me here, I head deeper down the expansive section on magic until I reach a practically empty area. While browsing through the books I find several on how the children of interracial unions can use magical spells unique to certain races. For example, if someone from Polypus were to be with someone from Canis, then that child would be able to use fire and ice spells.

This is interesting to me even though the books don’t give a definitive answer as to why interracial children are capable of this beyond a variety of convincing theories. In fact, most of the books go back to the question of why is humanity capable of using magic in the first place when we weren’t able to use it for hundreds of millions of years. Wait, does my sudden interest in it mean that God wants me to marry someone who is outside of my kingdom? I was previously interested in books about being a mother and knowing if I should marry after all. Putting that thought aside for now, I keep reading through and skimming certain books until I come across a well-dressed man from Draco who appears as if he is royalty because of the golden jewelry that adorns him, his armor, and his weapons.

“What are you doing here? This section was locked off for today,” the noble says.

“I wasn’t told,” I say.

“Then you should leave at once. I am conducting private and important research for the kingdom of Draco.”

Both the noble and I turn our heads when we hear someone walking behind me and see a man from Phasianus who appears to be a servant because of his basic coat and leather armor.

“That goes for you too unless you have an important message for me,” the noble says.

“I’m not a messenger nor am I your servant. None of the men, women, and children of Phasianus are servants of the tyrants of Draco and they will no longer serve you!” the man says before transforming his arms into blades and charging at the noble.

I freeze the man’s legs with an ice spell and then say. This, however, isn’t enough to stop him as he spits out a crossbow bolt that almost lands in the noble’s head, instead, it just cuts his face as he dodges the bolt.

“Kill him already!” the noble says just as I encase the assailant in ice. “Why didn’t you kill him to begin with?!”

“We in Polypus try not to kill in libraries, which are just as sacred to us as churches. You wouldn’t kill someone in a church, would you?” I say.

“I’m sure God would be fine with it in this situation.”

As we are talking, we notice the sounds of conflict echo throughout the library and run to the source of the noise to find people from Draco and Phasianus fighting each other. The librarians and citizens of Polypus freeze those fighting against each other while those who can’t fight are seeking shelter or running away from the fighting. Even as most of the fighters are frozen, the fighting soon escalates as those from Draco transform into animals such as wyverns, bears, monkeys, and tigers all of which have their armor morph with their bodies so that it stays on. The noble that I’m with does the same, transforms into a dragon, and flies up to help his allies.

“Attention, all loyal servants of God and Polypus,” a voice says in my head, “Pour your magic into the orbs coming up and down to your respective levels so we may quell the violence that taints the sanctity of our library.”

A blue orb floats down to my level and I do as the voice says along with the librarians and others who use ice magic. The orb convulses after absorbing so much magic and turns into a large octopus with a singular eye in the center of its big forehead. My vision blurs as I begin to see out of the eye of the octopus which gives me a sight of everyone on every floor around me as if I have multiple eyes. In addition, the power within me feels as if it’s been multiplied and shared, and it has since I can cast spells through the octopus along with those who have poured their magic into it. We can freeze both parties with our magic and attack with the tentacles of the octopus to knock out the people from Draco who have become dragons and wyverns who transform back into their human form once knocked out leading to a mostly easy victory for us and peace being restored to the library.

As the people from Draco and Phasianus are being taken out of the library by the guards, I wonder why this happened. I know tensions between the two kingdoms are shaky, but I didn’t think it would result in open hostility, especially with what’s already going on in the world with the ratmen, beastmen, and other conflicts. Those from Draco do remind me of the high elves from Oron since they are the defacto leading kingdom of the Holy Land over the other elven kingdoms of Abaddon and Matias despite them being a singular land and kingdom.

“The reason for both Draco and Phasianus fighting each other today was the same. For the love of their kingdom,” a nearby librarian says to me. “I read your mind because the connection we shared while we were connected to the octopus is still somewhat here despite its fading.”

“How did you know why both peoples fought each other then?” I ask.

“The ice that I’ve encased them in allows me to.”

“I see. I’m only able to sense their feelings, but not so much their thoughts.”

“You’ll eventually develop that skill if you have to. Those from Draco were looking at ways to gain more magical powers to push back the ratmen from within and outside of their borders while those from Phasianus were doing the same but wanted to push out those from Draco who abused their power. Both had good motives but took out their outrage on the wrong parties. The Draco wanted to kill those who dishonored them and could undermine their plans and the Phasianus wanted freedom but targeted those who weren’t the tyrants that ruled over them and even if they killed their tyrants, their situation would’ve worsened or stayed the same because Draco has no tolerance for rebels and traitors.”

“What will happen to them now?”

“They’ll simply be kicked out of the country for breaking one of our most important laws and handed over to the law enforcement of their respective countries.”

“I see, and I assume those from Phasianus will be dealt with severely for instigating the conflict while those from Draco will get a slap on the wrist if anything.”

“Correct. Still, I hope both sides will be punished for their own sake to learn from the errors of their ways. It’s also tragic for both sides since the search for power and knowledge to be used for a good purpose is a narrow road that could lead to the kind of senseless violence that you have seen today. Regardless of that, I and the other librarians are thankful for your help, Jigna. The librarians below will know of your help and you’ll be allowed to access our most treasured collections.”

“Thank you.”

With that bit of excitement out of the way, I head down into the deepest depths of the library and hopefully closer to the truth that I seek.

Salvation Through Surrender: Chapter 1 – Learning and Searching

Chapter 1 – Learning and Searching

While looking through my books, I realize that I’m getting nowhere new with them so I look outside the window of the library and reflect on my next step. I look at the grey and white skies as it lightly snows before looking down at the towering buildings, libraries, some of the other buildings on the ground, and those that are suspended in the sky. In the sky, those proficient in magic fly around on wings of ice or flying birds, chimera, and giant insects made of ice. I’m going to have to go to a different library if I want to learn more. The search for truth is the search for God since He is the living truth after all and the more truth that I know about the world, the closer I’ll be to God.

Looking through a book of libraries, I see that the next closest library that I haven’t visited is one that sits on the border of my kingdom, Polypus, the one I’m currently in, and another kingdom of the east called Draco. Since it’s on the border, it may be dangerous, but I’m sure the magical spells I’ve learned are enough to meet whatever foe I may face. Besides, nothing worth doing is easy. Going to the nearest mirror, I fix my long dark hair and look into my dark blue and light blue eyes which have two pupils and irises each, and then into my third eye in the cross-shaped cut that’s in the center of my forehead. My third eye is continuously looking up at Heaven to contemplate God’s will for me.

Despite all the knowledge I know, I don’t know where I should be going in my life. I could use my magic to keep the ever-shifting lands of Polypus together, use it to become a soldier or a guard. Maybe I should be a librarian because of how much I know. There is the life of a nun, that of a wife, or of taking care of the frost-born animals and vegetation.

“Lead me in the right direction, Lord,” I say before kissing my cross necklace.

Next, I walk up to the nearest open window, jump out, and then activate my gliding spell that allows me to safely float down from the floating library. On the ground, I see other people like me dressed in blue flowing outfits, that have pale white skin, and have octopus-like tentacles for limbs, some of which also have the heads of an octopus. My arm is that of a tentacle with an eye in the center of my palm as well since it acts as a catalyst for my magic. Those who are born octopus-like or who train to be through constantly practicing magic, absorbing knowledge, and meditating on the truths of God can use more advanced magics more easily and are more intelligent than even the most learned people inside and outside of Polypus. It’s not a goal of mine to become a complete octopus person like some are since I don’t even know if I should yet.

On the outskirts of the city, the ground lifts and descends thanks to those who are adjusting the land to keep it together. It’s said that the war that ended the future caused the lands of Polypus to be this way, and as far as we know, that has to be the case since this land was never noted as ever-shifting in the ancient letters that have managed to survive generations of decay. Because we try to learn from the lessons of the past, Polypus tends to stay out of the politics and conflicts of the world and just keep to ourselves unless we absolutely have to such as when we lend aid to those who are facing the scourge of beastmen, ratmen, and other traitors who have formed their own factions against the Church. Our land is mostly peaceful with the wildlife typically sleeping in hibernation or appearing statue-like as if they are meditating. The vegetation is all frozen, and yet, it grows to have crystal leaves that look like snowflakes.

After leaving the city gates, I use my magic to fly to get to my next location faster and then rest under a tree to replenish my strength. As I conjure a snowflake the size of my hand and look at it as it rotates in midair, I think about the nature of this amazing gift. Very few cultures are capable of using magic such as the elves and the kingdoms of Corvius, Canis, Onocrotalus, Noctua, Phasianus, and Draco. Every other kingdom besides them is incapable of even casting the most basic of spells that hardly use any strength such as the conjuring one I’m using now. As in all miraculous things, we don’t know the particulars for this reason other than being a mutation as a result of the war that ended the future, however, both the ratmen and beastmen are both mutated peoples and can’t use any magic other than the satanic kind that all men can use if depraved enough. It’s also theorized that the kingdom of the far west is capable of it, but since no one besides the beastmen that walk across bridges that appear and disappear in a mist is capable of getting to the Americas, no one can say for certain if this is the case. No one even knows if the continents over there still exist or if it’s just a series of large and small islands now similar to Polypus.

Seeing that the sky is beginning to darken, I decide to close my eyes for a bit to take a quick nap before continuing on my journey. No time seems to pass until I hear someone talking to me and shaking my shoulder. When I open my eyes, I see that it’s a group of travelers wrapped up in heavy coats, wearing armor and weapons, who have horses, and a carriage. The one who woke me up appears to have been slightly startled for some reason.

“Um, are you okay?” the man asks.

“Yes. Is something wrong?” I say.

“Aren’t you, uh, freezing out here?”

“Not at all. I’m fairly comfortable.”

“Told you she was a native of Polypus and didn’t need our help,” one of the travelers with the man says.

“How was I supposed to know? I’ve never been here before.”

“I told you. The dress, pale skin, and tentacle arm are dead giveaways.”

“Is it true that you people only eat ice?” another one of the travelers asks.

“No. The vegetation and animals nourish us the same as the vegetation and animals from your kingdom despite being made of mostly ice,” I say.

“Huh. I’d prefer a mostly hot meal.”

“I’d like one too, so come on, you two. Stop bothering her with stupid questions. We’re the only ones who need help getting warm in this freezing weather.”

“Stay safe. The city down the road has a place that makes hot foods for foreigners like you,” I say before closing my eyes again.

I am again awakened by something nudging me. This time it’s an ice lion that curiously looks at me. Next to the ice lion is a tundra elephant that has smaller lions playing with its trunk and another large lion lying on top of the elephant.

Not knowing what to say to it, I ask, “I’m sorry. Is this where you usually sleep?”

The lion tilts its head curiously again before nudging my face with its own, licking me, and getting on top of the elephant as it starts to walk away. That was strange. God acts through the creatures here so I wonder what that could’ve meant. Again, I go back to sleep since the sky still looks dark and my strength is still not at its fullest, and again, I am awakened by someone touching me except this time I feel a blade cutting at my arm. In an instant, my tentacle arm grabs the blade and my fingers stretch so I can grab my assailant’s arm before even opening my eyes that now see that I’m surrounded by five armed masked bandits. They cautiously look at me with their weapons raised and eyes darting from me to the other bandit I have in my grasp. Using my magic, I cast a spell on the bandit whose arm I’m holding to make him talk and answer me honestly.

“Why are you attacking me and why did you try cutting off my arm?” I ask.

“Be…because we know that your weird tentacle for your magic and that even if you didn’t have anything valuable on you, we could sell the arm to the ratmen who use it for research,” the bandit says as he resists my influence on his mind.

I don’t need my magic to tell that he still wants to kill me despite already being caught. Casting a subtle mist spell, I can feel that the others feel the same. They think their advantage in numbers will scare me or win them the fight, however, they are mistaken. Using my ice magic, I turn the blood of the bandit whose arm I’m holding to ice and make sharp icicles impale him from the inside out. He dies in an instant and I push him over as I face the four other bandits now charging at me at once.

They don’t know it yet, but they’ve already been beaten since they’ve unknowingly been breathing in the magical mist I used to read their emotions and that’s been blending in because of the frosty weather. I use the mist to choke the air in their lungs and bodies, which immediately makes them keel over and suffocate, and then I immediately turn the mist into icicles to impale them from the inside just like the first bandit to bring a swift end to their suffering. Thank you, God, for giving me the knowledge and expertise to use these spells to protect myself. It is my hope that you gave these ignorant sinners a chance the clarity to repent in the moments before their death. May this icy weather, that You bless this kingdom with, preserve their bodies for whatever use You have in mind for them whether it’d be food for the animals or an example for others like them. My rest has restored my strength and this warm-up for my magic makes me feel ready for the road ahead, so I cast my flying spell and continue on my way.
