Undertaker of Sorrows: Sorrowful Heart 2 – Money Can’t Buy Happiness

Sorrowful Heart 2 – Money Can’t Buy Happiness
Even though being rich is a more relaxing life than being poor, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t come with its challenges. As Christy will tell anyone, her riches are a burden. Because of the position she’s put in, she lives a simple and boring life. Her small but luxurious house has everything she could want. She has a car and personal airplane at the ready to take her anywhere in the world. If that wasn’t enough, she has various gifts and trinkets from her employees. In terms of awards, she has trophies and certificates from every major award event for her charity and efforts to help the needy of the world, however, she doesn’t have any recent awards.
The news she hears is the same as it was when Christy started her career of helping others. A few things might’ve been silenced, but that doesn’t mean she won’t be reminded about them in some way. Books and letters of causes, the history of conflicts and disease, along with ads for charities scatter her office. Her calendar has several days marked for public events that she will speak at while her social media pages are a free space for charities and causes to advertise in. After doing her normal morning activities, she sits to look over the flowers in her garden from her room. A person she assumes to be one of her assistants silently gives her a letter. It says,
“It's time to stop your mourning
It's time to wake to a new morning
Because this is a warning you should know
So you can be saved from your woes

You know what causes you despair
Your time for mourning has been fair
Now rise from your sadness
And taste the sweetness of gladness

The Undertaker of Sorrows is coming after you
He knows what you've been through
He wants you to succeed
But if you fail, he will do more than make you bleed

Your ways have caused others harm
And the state of your soul is cause for alarm
So let go of what causes you sorrow
Or the Undertaker will not let you live after tomorrow”
Before she can question the person who gave her the letter, she looks over her shoulder to see that no one is in the room with her. The room is large, and Christy is on the far end of the room. No one should’ve been able to get out of the room without making noise and it’s been quiet the entire time. The only explanation is that the Undertaker himself gave her the letter himself based on what is known about him. Christy looks around her house to find that no one is home. She checks the working schedules of her assistants to find that no one is working today to confirm her explanation.
Nervous about what she must get rid of, Christy looks through her possessions, gathers the ones that she has the most attachment to, and sends a message to a charity to pick them up. Moments later, she meets a man at the door who has arrived to pick up these possessions. He smiles, tips his hat, and picks up everything surprisingly easily despite how heavy they all are. Christy doesn’t see the man’s face, but when she turns around, she sees a similarly dressed pick-up man. She turns around again to see the Undertaker of Sorrows grin at her, tip his hat, and drive off with her possessions. Seeing that someone has already picked up her possessions, the pick-up man gets back in his truck and drives away too.
Feeling a bit of relief from giving away her possessions, Christy goes back to relax only to find the same letter on her bed in an unopened condition. After reading it again, she looks up to see the Undertaker watering her flowers. He looks up to her with his smile, which pushes her to action. She gathers resignation letters from her employees that note their sorrow in leaving her and gives them to the Undertaker. He shakes his head.
Going through her possession again, she finds letters from her family that detail their concern for her. The Undertaker rejects these as well. Next, she gives him letters from organizations that are about them wondering about her periods of recent inactivity and her meager giving. That isn’t what the Undertaker is looking for. How about a wedding ring? Nope. Past awards? No. Gifts from the deceased who she said she would help? Not even close. Everything in her gives reminds her of her grief. She doesn’t feel like she deserves it because of the people who suffer in the world while she lives in luxury.
There’s only one last thing she can think she could give. She lights her house on fire then gets a knife and cuts her throat in front of the Undertaker who shakes his head and waves his hand in concern as she kills herself and lights all her possession on fire as a sacrifice for those who are suffering in the world. What the Undertaker wanted is more figurative rather than literal. Nevertheless, he moves on from the sad scene to continue his work.

A Flip of the Coin: Chapter 4 – Trapped with Tough Choices

Chapter 4 – Trapped with Tough Choices
“AAAAHHHH!!”
How did this mask full of wasps get on my head?! I can barely see through the eye holes. Breathing is another difficult thing because the wasps keep getting in my nose as I try to breathe in, so I have to breathe as softly as possible. This mask is locked on my face with a key lock on the back of it. Vic? Vic! Where are you?! I can sense him, but it’s faint. It feels like he’s asleep or kept asleep because of all the stabbing I feel. The wasps are probably keeping him asleep so he can’t help me. Where are Eerie and Benedict?
Right now, I’m sitting at a table with other people at it. Everyone but me has their hands, feet, and neck locked to the chair. Some are trying to escape, others are panicking, and there are a few who are just lying still. They can’t be dead, so they must be trying to bear having the wasps in their mask. The room is filled with a weird sticky substance, wasp nests, and dozens of wasps flying around. Since I’m the only one who’s free, I try freeing the closest person to me, but the locks are too hard to break. It doesn’t help that the wasps in my mask keep walking all over my face to obscure my view. There’s nothing I can do in here, so I exit the room as a couple of people trapped in it beg me to say. Sorry, but I can’t do anything for you.
I exit the room to find myself in a hotel that is filled with the same sticky substance and wasps everywhere. While walking around, I find people lying on the ground. They appear to be sleeping while some twitch on and off. The way some of them are makes it look like they escaped only to be put in this state.
“Hello,” I hear a girl’s voice say.
I recognize her. This is the girl I saw before I passed out. How am I hearing her voice?
“I have to thank you again for getting rid of Sybella and Shea, especially Sybella. I could never get past her spiders and my wasps couldn’t break her webs. It’s a good thing you defeated them when you did because I was getting lonely. You see, I’ve been trying to get a real friend and these people that I’ve found aren’t good friends at all. They won’t stop fighting me and won’t even try to be friendly with me even when I have their assistants held at gunpoint so to speak. Oh, excuse me for talking so much. It’s been a while since I’ve last talked to someone. Please, ask whatever you want.”
I must be careful with the things I ask her. Getting her upset will probably make me end up like these people.
“How are you talking to me? Who are you? My name is Val…erie.”
“My name is Ziva. I can communicate to you through my wasps. It’s one of their many quirks.”
“Why did you put everyone in masks and have our assistants the way you do?”
“I want to be sure that you won’t do anything dangerous or something you shouldn’t.”
“Where are my friends?”
“They’re in their own room having a nice little sleep.”
“Can I leave here?”
“Why would you want to do that?”
“I have to do something important with my friends. It’ll help you get more friends and you won’t need to what you’re doing anymore to become friends with them.”
“Really? That’s great-but wait! I’ve been fooled before and I won’t be fooled again. People have said similar things and haven’t come back…willingly. You have to prove to me that you’re my friend first by making your way up to me.”
“That should be simple. Where are you?”
“I’m three floors above you. I’m in my room right now commanding my wasps to look for more people to make friends with. I know it sounds simple, but it isn’t. You have to beat three challenges I have for you to prove that you’re my friend.”
“Why three?”
“It’s more satisfying. Ever hear the rule of three? You don’t think it’s good enough? I could add more fun challenges if you’d like.”
“No, it’s okay, I get it. It’s pretty clever of you to think of three challenges.”
“You think so? I like you already. Get up here quickly so I can hug you.”
“S-sure.”
Something is really wrong with this girl. Did she have some kind of tragic past or did something similar to Kitsune happen to her? Well, I’ll find out soon if I can pass these challenges. I walk up a set of stairs, but the next set is blocked so I enter the hallway. This enter place is filled with knocked out people, wasps, and the sticky substance that I now think the wasps make their nests out of. It all looks the same though there is a clear path to follow, however, the sameness doesn’t make it any more comfortable to be in.
A swarm of wasps comes together in front of me and forms a humanoid wasp with pincer hands.
“Is this the first challenge?” I ask.
“Yes! He’s one of my soldiers that I can make. You don’t have to fight him or anything. Just give him a big hug!”
“…Give him a hug?”
“You don’t have to worry him hurting you since I control him. Go ahead!”
“O-okay…”
The wasp soldier holds out his arms. I slowly walk towards him with my arms open. He pulls me forward and hugs me tightly. My body is shaking because of how tingly and nervous I feel. Slowly I get as comfortable as I can until the soldier lets go.
“Good job! My soldier says he feels so much better now that you’ve hugged him.”
“I’m…I’m glad he says so. What do you use these soldiers for?”
“Besides battle, they can help me test out opponents before I fight them. I can make fakes of myself as well to fight other people as I command them from a distance. You know that you can’t start a fight unless the person you’re fighting knows a fight is coming. I was hiding in the shadows and showed myself just enough for the battle start to count.”
I didn’t even see her in the shadows, but I guess I just wasn’t paying attention because of what I was being told. Ziva’s craftier than she seems. Going up to the next floor, my-my feet are trapped in place. My arms are restrained by soldiers and one approaches me and kneels down.
“What’s going on?!”
My mask is then removed and the wasps inside fly off. Finally! I can breathe normally. Even though the air doesn’t smell that good, it’s better than the way it was before.
“My other soldiers are getting jealous of you hugging one of them. Since you look like such a princess, you have to give them a kiss! Maybe one of them will turn into a prince.”
“A kiss?”
“Don’t worry. They’re clean! Well, as clean as insects can be.”
Is this a sick joke to her? She’s not giving me a choice. After this, I’m going to puke my stomach out. I lean in and kiss the one soldier on the head. Eck! He tastes like salt and grease. The soldier acts shy then bows before backing away. What? What’s going on now? Why are these wasps flying around me? Ah! What are they doing on my face?
“Wait! Don’t put the mask on!”
There are so many in here now. Why did she do this? Did I do something wrong?
“Why? What’s wrong, Valerie?”
“It’s hard to breathe with all of these wasps in this mask.”
“Don’t worry about it. They like you so much that more want to be close to you. If you breathe them in, they’ll find their way out. Trust me that nothing will happen. I’ve already tried to fill people with wasps, and nothing happened to them. I mean they were screaming and everything, but there wasn’t any major damage…that I could see.”
I’m not even going to think about that. I just have to beat this last stupid challenge and I’ll be out of here in no time. The challenges so far are just gross and nothing painful or challenging. They’re just simple tasks. Once I get up to the next floor, I see Ziva waiting outside an open door. Why are there so many unconscious bodies around here?
“Come over here, friend!” she says while waving at me with a weird smile on her face and look in her eyes.
She enters into a room and I follow her to enter into a room with a large wasp that takes up the entire room. That must be her assistant. It’s so massive. Ziva is sitting on a bed with that frozen expression of happiness. It’s disturbing to me.
“I’m here now. What’s the last challenge?”
“Touch the butt end of my assistant. She wants to feel your touch.”
“Okay.”
Touching a butt-end is my last challenge? Seems fitting. Once I touch the butt-end of the large wasp, a big hole opens, and an uncountable number of wasps come out. This must be where they all spawn from. Okay, I guess that was-
“Don’t move your hand yet!”
“Wh-why not?”
“You’ll see!”
The wasps start crawling over me. They’re biting me! I can’t help but twitch in reaction. Am I supposed to stay like this?!
“What are they doing?!”
“They’re giving you kisses! Since you’re my first real friend, they want to show you their appreciation by showing you their affection. They won’t kiss or touch any private parts, so you won’t have to worry about that. They aren’t pervs at all. Aren’t they good boys?”
AAAAHHHHHH!!!!! Make it stop already! Make it stop!
“Okay, boys, you can stop giving Valerie so much affection. Now, it’s my-turn. Valerie?”
“Hu…huh? What happened?”
“You must’ve been knocked out by all of the kisses you were receiving.”
“Oh…”
Hey, the mask is off. I look at and feel my skin to feel it perfectly smooth and normal.
“My boys didn’t harm you at all. I would’ve had to squish the ones that did.”
“Oh, thank you…”
“Are you alright, Valerie? You don’t seem so good.”
“I’m…I’m fine. Can I leave with my friends now?”
“Hold on. I finally have a real friend with me! Spend some time with me and then I’ll let you go. I won’t put you through any more challenges. I promise!”
“Okay.”
“Yes!”
Ziva jumps out of her bed to hug me and I hug her back. If I didn’t, then beating those challenges might’ve been for nothing. I sit down with Ziva on her bed as if we were having a sleepover. She looks happier than before, which bothers me and makes it hard to look her in the eyes and hold a smile. Her eyes feel like they’re uncomfortably touching my eyes.
“Sooo.”
“Soo?”
“What do you want to talk about?”
“Can I ask about your assistant?”
“Sure. She doesn’t mind people talking about her in front of her.”
“Has she fought anyone before?”
“No, she won’t be good in a fight since she’s so fragile despite her size and large stinger. That’s why she spawns hundreds of thousands of wasps to do the work for her with quirks of their own to wear down their opponent before a real fight. She’s one of a kind from what I know though there could be more. She could probably be easily squashed like a normal wasp. What? You totally could.”
If she’s right, then I could…no. It’s too risky. I don’t know if she has any more tricks up her sleeve.
“Can I ask you something, Valerie?”
“Hmm? What is it?”
That creepiness in her face is going away.
“When you’re done doing what you’re doing, can you come back to me so we can hang out together? I’d love to enjoy life with someone who likes being with me and likes talking to me.”
“I…sure.”
“Are you telling me the truth?” Is she starting to cry? Ah! What’s with these all these hugs? “I’ve lost so many people when everything ended, and I don’t want to lose anyone else.”
“Yes, I’m telling the truth. I promise you that we’ll be friends and we’ll hang out together after I finish what I need to.”
“Thank you…”
“So, do you have all of your memories?”
“Yes, I defeated my separated half and I remember my past. I was a normal schoolgirl who struggled to keep friends after school. They would always cut off communications with me when the summer started, so I would spend my summers alone while my parents were at work. I kept my hopes up that things would change, but I didn’t think they would change this way. Sure, I have a real friend now, however, I feel like I’ve been doing the wrong thing this entire time.”
You think?
“Uh. Maybe it’s because of the way you make friends?”
“I guess so. I’d be willing to change that if life could somehow go back to normal.”
“Well, don’t you worry about that. Things will work out for us in the end. I know it.”
“You really are a true friend. Okay. You can go now. I just had my soldiers escort your friends outside. They should be awake by the time you get downstairs.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really. Now, do what you need to and hurry back here before I feel the need to keep you here forever.”
“G-got it!”
When I get outside, I find my other half along with Vic, Torio, and Benedict with his crow. They wake up as I walk to them. Vic comes up to rub his face against mine while Torio is doing the same to my other half. I explain what happened to them once they’re completely awake.
“You let her live when you could’ve easily taken her out?” my other half says.
“She seems like a good person.”
“So did that ‘angel’ and look what happened because of that! We’re always making bad choices because we think we can trust so-called ‘good people’.”
“I made the best decision I thought I could at the time. I didn’t know what would happen if I chose to attack. You weren’t awake to see all of the things she did to me. You didn’t feel it!”
“Girls, I think we should walk away from here,” Benedict says while looking up.
I look up to see Ziva looking down on us with that creepy look on her face.
“You’re right. Let’s get far away from here,” my other half says as she walks away.
Ziva waves at me and I wave back with a reassuring smile, so she doesn’t think anything is happening.
Once we get further, my other half says, “I’m done being this way. We should combine to become stronger.”
“You want to fight me?”
“It’s not really a fight if we both win. You get to remember all that we did along with our original body.”
“What do you think Benedict?”
“The idea itself is beyond strange, but so is our current situation. She or rather you are right. It would be better if you were back to normal so to speak. There is nothing in the future that I know of that wouldn’t be better if you fought in a singular form.”
“Alright. How do you want to do this then? Do you want us to fight with everything we have?”
“No, I want us to fight simply. We give everything we got in one attack. It’s simpler and less of a time-waster that way.”
“I agree. Let’s get this done quickly.”
I must admit that I’m a little afraid even though I live either way. The thought of merging together with myself and not knowing what will exactly happen is making me nervous. I’ll also remember the things that worry my other half so much. Well, here we go. Vic and Torio charge at each other then strike. I feel claws go through me as I merge with myself. I’m not sure if I won against myself or if I’m feeling what my other half did. My body feels like it’s being forced back together until it snaps in place.
When I open my eyes, I see that it’s over. I’m in my original body although my outfit is strange. I like it, don’t get me wrong, but I look like a villain. Now that I’m together, I can remember everything from the past in its entirety. My boyfriend, Victorio, and I were down by the river when a light shined down on us. An angel, who is part black and white with a veil over his face, came down.
He said to us, “Do not be afraid, Valerie and Victorio, I am here to bring you good news. You have been chosen, by God, to rid humanity of temptation, hunger, and thirst.”
“Wait, what? Why us?” I asked.
“Your prayers have been heard, Valerie. To become famous for something good as you wish, you will have to perform a ritual that will make humanity better than it’s ever been.”
“I don’t know. I don’t feel as if I deserve this.”
“None of the saints in Heaven felt that they deserved the role they were given by God. Your humble feelings are a result of your pure soul.”
“I still don’t know. It just sounds too good to be true.”
“But who else could do such a thing? The devil surely can’t. People will be separated from their sinful side and they will not be hungry or thirsty. They will awaken a new power within them as a result of this.”
“Hmmm.”
“Okay, there is a single side effect that isn’t worth your concern, but you may as well know. The internet and electrical systems in the world will shut down. The positives are that illegal dealings and pornography will be eradicated while the negatives are nonexistent. With the newfound abilities you’ll have, you won’t have to worry about anything.”
“…Okay. We’ll do it.”
“Splendid.”
The angel then explained what to do and we did it. Victorio stayed quiet as always and trusted my judgment in the matter. After we completed the ritual, a light overwhelmed us and separated me in two, but Victorio became a lion and a panther? That’s all that I remember. Our lives before that don’t concern me right now.
“How does it feel to be back to normal, Valerie?”
“Good, actually. Can I ask you why Victorio was made into a feline?”
“This happened only for him as his punishment for staying so quiet and always following your orders without questioning them.”
“What about you? How come you didn’t stop me before I completed the ritual?”
“I was told to in a vision but didn’t think it was that urgent. Before I got to the river, I stopped by an orphanage that I typically go to in the area. I wanted to stop by since I was going to go there after anyway. The kids over there love me especially since I’ve been their pseudo father ever since they were infants. What happened is also a result of my own mistakes. Before I remembered everything, I had to defeat a few of the kids I cared for along with a few other innocent people. This blue rose that you see on my hat is fake. Each petal is a heartfelt letter that the children wrote to me. I found it hidden when I went back to the orphanage.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry as well. My mistakes cost us all greatly.”
“Do you know why I woke up recently?”
“I have no clue. It could be God’s will for all I know. You being at the center of the explosion could be it, but I was near you and I woke up right after the explosion happened, so there’s that.”
“Hm. Whatever the case is, we have to fix the situation. What’s your solution?”
“Because of what that demon was allowed to do, the world is trapped in time. If we go by to where you were, we’ll find him waiting for us. I’ll start the exorcism while you protect me.”
“Got it. Let’s get moving then.”
Here we go. Come on, Victorio. Let’s redeem ourselves. That’s a nice roar. I’d like to hear you speak your mind when you get a real voice, and yes, I’ll actually listen to you from now on.

A Flip of the Coin: Chapter 3 – A Queen in an Apocalypse

Chapter 3 – A Queen in an Apocalypse
After a while of digging, we find our way to a stadium in the middle of the city. There are a bunch of vending stations outside that look like they’ve been recently abandoned. It looks like we scared off everyone out here once the buildings and webs that surrounded this stadium fell apart. We check the entrances and find them locked with gates and concrete. How did they get concrete here? Someone must have the ability to make it or move it here. Okay, Vic. You know what to do.
“Wait,” Eerie says, “They probably put this here to keep us out. If we break and enter through this entrance, they’ll probably attack us because we’ll show them that we’re looking for a fight. Let’s find another way in.”
We check another couple entrances and find the same thing.
“I don’t think we’re going to find an entrance because of what we did. How about we just make our own entrance somewhere else?” I suggest.
“I guess so. Where should we enter then?”
“There are windows around the stadium. They have shutters on them, but they shouldn’t be hard to cut through. We’ll get our cats to make stones to climb on to get to it.”
“That’s a good idea!”
“Thank you. Let’s get to it.”
Vic and Torio make large stones and stack them in a way that we can get to the windows. Torio then rips apart the shutters and we finally get in the stadium. We’ve entered an office that looks like nobody has been in for a while. The hallways are all dusty, so it looks like that after the shutters were closed, this place was forgotten about. We make our way down the stairs to find another shutter with no guards around it. Vic silently cuts it and we catch it before it falls. After going through the hole, we put what we cut back in place as best we can so no one would notice the breach if someone walks by here. Woah! Speaking about people walking by here, a small crowd of people run by with people in sport’s gear showing them out. Are these guards and are they using the gear as pseudo armor? Why would they even need it if they can’t be killed directly? I guess it’s just for the aesthetics. It looks like they did some adjustments to it to make it look more like armor.
One of the guards stops and asks us, “What are you two doing here?”
“Oh, we just stood here to not get trampled by those people,” I say.
“Are you staying or leaving?”
“We’re staying.”
“Good choice. Those other people have lost their faith in our queen.”
“Why’s that?”
“Sybella, who is our best protector besides the queen, has been defeated. Haven’t you heard?”
“Oh, yeah, but I don’t think it’s a reason to leave.”
“That’s right,” Eerie says probably so they don’t question her.
“I can tell that you’re both smart and faithful servants of Queen Shea. You should quickly go to the field since she’s going to be giving us a blessing soon.”
“Okay.”
Eerie and I walk away from the guard as he rejoins his squad.
“You’re good at playing a role. Maybe you were an actress before this started,” Eerie quietly jokes.
“That doesn’t sound like me, but I like it.”
We enter the inner stadium to find little camping tents spread around the field. People are looking up to an area of the stands that is lined with roses. Guards come out to make way for their queen as they lay out a colorful carpet. They then stand to the side and sound their trumpets.
“All kneel in honor of Queen Shea!” an announcer says through the speakers.
Eerie and I go in the crowd kneel on one knee, so we don’t stand out. A girl on a unicorn comes out of the shadows and down the stands.
She has a majestic and very princess-like appearance with her long flowing hair and dress. The eyes of the unicorn are bloodshot, which is strange. Maybe it’s a sign of its special ability. A ball of light then forms out of the unicorn’s horn and lights up the entire stadium.
Shea says in a booming voice, “Fear not my good subjects. Even though Sybella’s tragic defeat is one that has cost us dearly, I remind you that we will survive and continue to prosper as we always have. It doesn’t matter if your family or friends have left us. They will fend for themselves while we live in our paradise with each other.”
Light is released from the flowers that enter into every one of us. I feel secure, good, and happy, but I can’t let it distract me from asking Shea questions. The light from the flowers then become shaped like people and begin to dance around. My mind feels numb as if the dance is putting me into a trance.
“I will join you in a bit to talk to each one of you, but for now, you can enjoy yourselves with my servants of light.”
No, we can’t let ourselves be distracted by this. I can’t…Eerie grabs my hand and pulls me away from the crowd as they dance with the light. This snaps me out of my trance. Since the stadium keeps making us light-headed, we go outside of it where the stands are in Shea’s direction. Once we get enough distance, our heads are completely cleared.
“What are we going to do now?” I ask.
“We ask Shea what she knows. What else can we do?”
“But what if we start a fight? Did you see her power and how many followers she has?”
“We’ll just have to be extra careful. I don’t think she knows who defeated Sybella yet, so we should be safe.”
We hear the clopping of Shea’s horse coming in our direction, so we look at each other and silently prepare ourselves to talk to her. Her presence feels intimidating on its own despite her appearance and the smell of flowers that accompanies her. She also has a few guards with her, but I don’t feel like they’ll be as much trouble to deal with. The look on her face is curious but also soft. We can’t let our guard down.
“Hello. You must be eager to ask me something if you couldn’t wait to see me,” she says in a nearly quiet voice.
“Y-yes, we do,” Eerie says, “We wanted to know more about our past, what really caused the world to end, and what we can do to fix it.”
“Haha, I see why you were so eager to come to me because of all your questions. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you here before. Why should I answer your questions?”
The guard from before is with Shea and picks up for us by saying, “Remember the girls I was talking about? These are them.”
“Oh, alright then. I’ll answer your questions then. Follow me as we walk to my room. I need to get something from it for the people to further ease their nerves.”
I wonder what she has that can do that if she thinks her power isn’t enough. Regardless of what it is, we walk alongside Shea to her room.
She continues, “I’ll answer the easiest of your questions first that being what causes the world to end. That would be the decision of a single couple that they made with an angel. The two were told that if they performed a ritual the angel told them then everyone would be separated from their temptation which would result in people no longer wanting to sin or commit evil for any reason. Another thing they were told was that hunger and thirst would be eliminated along with it. Other people say there were more positives along with that, but those were the big two.”
“A couple aided by an angel did this?” Eerie asks.
“That’s right. It’s strange I know. Because of the supernatural nature of what happened, I’m not sure how to fix it either than bringing together this small society of people while trying to bring others in. If we band together, then we should be able to bring things back to some kind of normalcy. Being unable to feel pain, hunger, thirst, or tiredness is a plus so we work daily to grow and bring others in.”
“That’s what I figured. I wish we could do more.”
“I know, but it is my opinion that things are better the way they are now even if it doesn’t look like it. The world might’ve been at war with itself, but the strong and righteous have survived and all but the smallest bits of evil have been eradicated.”
“Do you really think that?”
“It doesn’t mean that there isn’t any light in the world just because you don’t see the sun or moon. Do you understand what I’m saying?”
“I understand, Queen Shea.”
I knew there wasn’t any real way of fixing the world. We’ll just have to deal with what we have and make the most of it.
“Now, I’m going to show you your past selves. With this.”
We enter Shea’s room and she picks up what looks to be a halo.
“Is that an angel’s halo?”
“Yes. It was found where the explosion of light originated from, which just so happened to be this city. It can reveal memories from a person’s past to the person holding the halo and the person who it is used on. It also helps me figure out what a person specifically wants or needs to be better.”
Oh no. If she looks into our memories, she’ll see that we were ones who defeated Sybella. I look over to Eerie and she seems to have recognized this as well.
“We uh…on second thought…I’m not sure if I want to know who I was.”
“I know a lot of people who’ve hated themselves after finding out their past, but I’ll help you overcome your problems.”
It doesn’t look like we have a choice.
“I’ll go first. If I was a terrible person, I want to know,” Eerie says while looking at me.
What is she doing? Shea will find out what we did either way. Is she somehow hoping that she won’t do anything to me if she is found out first? I’m feeling really nervous about this and Vic is too, but I’m trying to keep him calm. How is Eerie managing to keep Torio so calm and collected with the obvious way she must be feeling?
Shea puts the angel halo on Eerie’s head. The halo glows as both of them close their eyes. After about ten agonizing seconds, the halo stops glowing. They both open their eyes and look at each other uncomfortably.
“Is something wrong, my queen?” one of the guards ask.
“No, there isn’t.”
Shea reaches for something behind her as Eerie takes a step back. Here we go…! What the heck? Something just busted through the walls of the stadium. A dark fog steeps into the building as everyone around me starts panicking. I see Shea about to flip a coin. Does she think we planned this?
“Hey!”
“What’s going on?”
“Eerie!”
“Val!”
“Where did those two go?”
Something flew in, grabbed us, and is taking us out of the stadium. I look up to see a large crow. Is this the same crow as before? It seems so much more monstrous than before. The crow takes us to the top of a building where we see what looks to be a medieval doctor who is also a priest by the looks of his outfit. After dropping us off, the crow shrinks and becomes small enough to be a normal crow and rests on the man’s arm.
“I’ve finally found you,” the man says in a very grungy voice as he approaches us.
“Who are you?” I ask as Eerie, Vic, and Torio prepares to fight.
“Calm yourselves, I don’t want to fight you. I want to help. My name is Benedict.”
“I…I’ve seen you before,” Eerie says.
“You have. That must mean you remember who you were, but your other half hasn’t?”
“Shea has an angel’s halo that makes us remember our past and she only used it on me. I’m very sorry for what we’ve, I mean what I’ve done.”
“What are you two talking about?”
“You’ll find out soon. First, we have to take out Shea and her forces. They’re coming for us and won’t stop,” Eerie says.
“I’ll aid you in this fight. You’ll need it.”
Benedict takes off his mask to reveal a monstrous crow face beneath it.
We meet Shea’s forces on the ground. Both of us stare down each other in silence as we ready ourselves to fight.
“Do you want to do the honors?” Benedict asks.
“Gladly,” Shea says as she flips a coin.
Eerie and I face off against Shea as Benedict faces off against her guards. Since we aren’t in an enclosed area, Shea’s smells aren’t as effective as they were, but she spawns soldiers of light to make up for her unicorn’s lack of combat ability. These soldiers have spears, swords, shields, arrows, and other weapons as if they were medieval soldiers. Vic takes them out from a distance while Torio’s spiky skin gives him both an effective defense and offense. Shea looks none too pleased with our animals’ skills to fight effectively against so many foes. I look over to Benedict to see him finishing off his foes. That man and his crow are lethal.
With our other foes out of the way, we focus our efforts on Shea who is unable to take our combined strength and falls to our attacks. She is now trapped underneath her unicorn with no way of escaping.
“Wh-where is my help?” Shea calls out in a loud voice as her unicorn screams at an ear-shattering pitch.
We wait for more to come, but no one does, which is strange. I’m sure I saw more guards and people willing to fight for Shea. Whatever the case is, I’m not going to complain about it.
“Why? Why couldn’t you let us be?” Shea asks us.
“Your defender attacked us first,” I say.
“And she was right to by the looks of it. Sybella tried to convince me before that the way the world is was a mistake. I was wrong and now, I can see why. It’s because of people like you that only think of yourself. I’m not going to let you continue doing what you want.”
Shea and her unicorn combine into one terrifying looking monster with part of the unicorn becoming a largemouth. The unicorn screams as it raises bodies from the ground. These appear to be people who were defeated because Sybella and Kitsune are among their numbers. This looks like too much to handle even if these people don’t seem to be as strong as they used to be. Shea’s unicorn jumps out of the crowd and continues to yell, which seems to invigorate her soldiers.
Benedict says, “You, with the lion, help me get to Shea.”
“Okay!”
“I’ll help clear a path for you!”
I can’t think of a strategy myself right now, so I have to follow them. Vic uses his long sweeping tale to keep away people behind us while Torio and Benedict’s crow clear the path ahead with their animals’ ability to turn their skin into a weapon. Benedict spews a dark fog out of his mouth so that everyone, but we are blinded and confused as to where we are. We have a clear shot at Shea now even though she’s moving around. Benedict sends his crow at Shea to force her to dodge it, which allows Vic to hit her in the air with his long tail. Once he stabs through her horse, she falls to the ground. Her resurrected soldiers become dust as Shea begins to disappear.
“I hope you’re happy with yourself,” she says as her final words.
Memories then begin to fill my head of her past. She was a leader in her school. Shea helped her friends with school problems along with personal ones before the world ended. When it did, she used her abilities to aid others and used her charisma and personality to gather a community. The other memories I see are those of the people she’s fought. There’s nothing that interests me in them. I wait for the memories of her looking at Eerie’s and find what shocked them. The girl who started all of this with her boyfriend was separated into two pieces with both of them having cat-like appearances and feline assistants. They still look like her, but is this really what I think it is?
“Eerie, are we really?”
“Yes, we are. We’re the same girl who ended the world with her boyfriend. Our real name is Valerie.”
“What? This isn’t making any sense to me.”
“That is why I’m here,” Benedict says as he puts his mask on, “I’m the exorcist who was trying to stop you, and I need your help in fixing it.”
“I’ll do whatever I need to correct my mistakes,” Eerie says.
“I still need answers,” I demand.
“Valerie, you-”
Before Benedict can say anything, we hear a coin flip. Is this the reinforcements Shea called for? No. We see a swarm of hornets flood the city. We are caught in the storm as we are stung repeatedly by their stingers. I don’t feel any pain, but I do feel sleepy. Everyone including me falls to the ground. I’m still trying to stand up as I see a figure walking towards us.
She kneels by us and says, “Thank you so much for getting rid of those two. They were really preventing me from getting more friends. Now, you’re going to be my best friends.”
“What are you talking about?” I struggle to say.
“Shh. Take a rest. You need it after battling so much.”
“Wait…”
