The Process of Dying - Ending

Link to full story.

Chapter 6 – A Scar Close to the Heart
With only one more trial left to go through, Daniel calms himself for what’s to come. He doesn’t say anything despite how much his soul feels and is.
Azrael puts his hand on Daniel’s shoulder and says, “Be still, Daniel. You have nothing to worry about.”
“I know. I’m just a bit nervous.”
“If I had a wife like yours, I’d be nervous too.”
“Instead, the poor sap has me,” Cherub says.
“I think I’d like to marry now,” Azrael jokingly says.
“Do angels marry?”
“Not at all. Our lives are dedicated to each other, humanity, and God. It’s like Holy Orders.”
“All angels are like priests then.”
“And we have a similar structure to yours. There are many kinds of angels with their own special roles like how there are many kinds of humans with their roles.”
“And they all look different from you I assume?”
“Different?”
“They don’t have the same skeletal look that you do.”
“Oh, is that what I look like to you?”
“What you look like to me?”
“You can’t seem to comprehend my existence so you perceive me in a certain way. To be honest, not many humans tell me how I look when they’re here. I just wished they did. I’d like to know if I look welcoming.”
“You do. You have that coach driver look to you.”
“What do I look like?” Cherub says.
“You’re half a skull and a hat at the same time.”
“Hahaha. I do need a hat to go along with my outfit and you’re always hovering around my head and hands.”
“You might as well have drawn the word “tool” on my face,” Cherub says.
“Oh, we love you Cherub,” Azrael says as he hugs him.
“That’s right.”
“Don’t make me cry you too! That won’t happen.”
Their conversation has lasted them until they’ve reached Daniel’s final destination. It’s a flower store where Daniel first met his wife, Rosemary. He remembers getting his sick mother flowers at the time.
He also remembers his mother saying, “When I can’t take of you as well as before, you’ll find a wife who will,” before he left to get the flowers.
It seems like fate that he met his wife that day. Daniel remembers seeing Rosemary for the first time. It was as if the most beautiful rose came to life and was given human form. He confidently asked her out and eventually married her a year later.
Azrael wakes Daniel from his flashbacks, “Come on, Daniel. Your worst sin lies ahead.”
“R-right.”
Daniel’s second to last piece of luggage is handed to the store clerk. The clerk opens the luggage and takes out a rose. It’s the same rose that Daniel placed on the grave of his wife. His eyes concentrate on the rose as everything changes around him. Everything in the store is now dead and long decayed. There is nothing outside the store but the abyss as it sits on a single pillar. Daniel goes to where he found Rosemary and sees her the way he last left her. Dead.
She’s eyeless and naked. The only thing that covers her is her two twin-snakelike-twin headed children that come from her stomach. She never birthed her children because of Daniel.
“Rosemary…”
“Daniel.”
“Daddy,” The twins say.
“I’m so sorry Rosemary. I let my anger get the best of me and I couldn’t control myself and-”
“Do you still love me, Daniel?”
“I…Of course I do.”
“Then why did you do this to us?”
“We were arguing about something important. I don’t remember what it was. Everything is a blur in my head because of the emotions I felt that day.”
“No one ever found out I died. We didn’t even know we were going to get twins.”
“I buried your body in a flower garden in the forest not too far from our house. We always used to go there to relax together and unwind.”
“You told everyone that I was taken by some urban legend monster.”
“I told everyone that except for the priest at our church. I confessed my sin to him and he didn’t tell anyone, but I still did penance every day since I didn’t feel forgiven. It’s probably why I died. I overworked myself so I could be forgiven.”
Daniel falls to the ground and bows to his wife and twin children.
“Please forgive me for what I did! I can’t ask you enough!”
“Do you still love me, Daniel?”
“I do!”
“Do you love your children?”
“I do!”
“You dedicated the rest of your life to obtain forgiveness even when you had it. You did charity, helped people around, killed yourself so that people would be happier than you. You’re already forgiven if you haven’t realized it yet.”
Daniel weeps as his wife and children embrace him. The flowers in the store come to life as water rains down on it. The water also washes away the last of the sin on Daniel and makes his soul beautiful as it was meant to be. His wife and children let him go as they disappear and the store changes back to normal. Daniel exits the flower store a new man. He takes off the robe he was wearing to reveal an angelic-like body. Light shines on him and fills him with color. He also now sees Azrael and Cherub as their true angel form.
“Oh, boy Daniel do you have something to show off,” Azrael says.
“I’m sorry, do you have something to wear?”
“It’s right here.”
Azrael gives Daniel robes that a royal saint would wear.
“Now, you’re ready for Heaven,” Azrael says as he leads Daniel to the gates.

Chapter 7 – Born Again
Daniel ascends the ladder that connects Earth, Purgatory, and Heaven together. After that, he walks up a set of stairs until he’s finally at the Gates of Heaven where Azrael hands in Daniel’s last piece of luggage.
“What was in there?” Daniel asks.
“Every part of you is given to Heaven. We already gave away your sins. Now we have to give them your purity.”
“Ha, and the only thing pure about me was in one big bag?”
“It held the most valuable qualities of you, so it was worth more on its own. That’s not to say that Heaven didn’t want the rest of you including your nothing.”
“I guess this is where we say goodbye.”
“It is.”
“Don’t start crying like you always do. Because I might,” Cherub says with teary-eyes.
“I won’t, Cherub. I’m proud of what Daniel has done and…okay, I might cry.”
“Maybe I can see you when you carry another soul here.”
“Maybe. We’ll have more time together when sin has been erased from the world.”
“I wonder, can I see how my body is doing?”
“Sure, just look down from the clouds.”
Daniel looks down and it appears as if he just died.
“What?” Daniel says.
“We are outside space and time,” Azrael explains, “Things that happen up here could feel like a day while down there it’s like a year relatively speaking.”
“Oh, well I wish you luck on who you guard next,” Daniel says as he hugs Azrael.
His guardian angel hugs back, “Thank you, Daniel.”
Azrael and Cherub leave Daniel as the Gates of Heaven open for him. A crowd of saints and angels gathers to greet another soul. They are led by God Himself who welcomes Daniel into Heaven. His wife and twin children come out of the crowd and hug him. The crowd carries them to a banquet that is held for Daniel. All of Heaven celebrates the complete saving of a soul. A soul who thought that he was beyond saving because of his past, and yet, was saved.

The Process of Dying - Chapter 5 - The Tyrant Apostles

Chapter 5 – The Tyrant Apostles
While heading towards his next destination, the thought of his family weighs heavily on his mind.
Azrael notices this and asks him, “Is something bothering you?”
“It’s…uh. It’s the thought of seeing my family again.”
“Now why would that bother you after all you’ve seen?”
“I don’t know. Maybe I still feel guilty for what I did.”
“It’s good to feel guilty. You’ll get rid of that feeling after this next trial.”
“Oh, I thought they were going to be next.”
“We could go for them next if you wanted. This next one is around the same difficulty as it so we could do that if you want.”
“No, I’d rather save them for last. Besides, I’m sure you know better than I do for what I’m supposed to do.”
“He only knows so much. That’s why I’m with him,” Cherub says.
“You’re a helper Cherub. It’s not like you’re my own guardian angel.”
“Whatever you say Azrael. It’s not like I don’t keep you company and give you good advice.”
“You do, and I always thank you for it.”
“You’re welcome.”
Before they even reach the next location, Daniel’s eyes are drawn to the top of it. It’s a cathedral and it’s the biggest building in the area. Light shines on the building, which gives it color and makes it stand out. The closer they get the grander it looks as it appears to be from Heaven itself. Many people walk in and out of the cathedral with their guardian angels, so this appears to be a common challenge for many. Azrael hands Daniel’s luggage over to a hooded priest and he allows him into the church.
Once inside, Daniel really begins to appreciate the art and design of the interior. The statues and paintings are divinely inspired. A choir above him sings hymns of joy and wonder while people pray below them in the pews. A single man comes out from a back room from the front of the church. He appears to be very skeletal in appearance and he wears a high priest’s outfit. The hat he wears has the upside-down cross of Saint Peter that goes through his head and into his mouth. The people in the pews rise up to reveal that they have similar horrifying appearances to the man who seems to be leading them.
“I know what this is,” Daniel says as he sits at the back of the cathedral.
“Is something the matter my child,” a priest sitting by him says.
“I never liked how the church acted like it was the authority of everything.”
“Why shouldn’t she? She is God’s bride and, as such, He gives her the authority to infallibly teach matters of faith and morality. She needs to be there to guide people to the truth.”
“Even for the forgiveness of sins? All of us are close to God and can talk to the angels and saints. Why do we need the church when we can directly talk to them?”
“Because priests and clergymen are given the blessing to do so. The laity can ask for forgiveness and do penance and can be forgiven, but only the ordained can absolve you of your sins. It is as God commanded it to be.”
“But why are people like the bishops and the pope infallible when they teach?”
“A Church that can teach without error needs official teachers who can teach without error.”
“What about the pope?”
“Every body needs a head to guide it.”
“What about the pope’s papal infallibility?”
“It’s only when he agrees with what’s previously established. He can’t change everything on a whim nor do his opinions carry weight. The pope has to be in agreement with the successors of the apostles in order to make infallible decisions that affect the way people think and act.”
“Sure, but what about the bad popes?”
“There’s no guarantee that there won’t be bad popes. They don’t affect the Church’s teachings, nor have they ever nor will they ever.”
“Is that why there’s a pope suffering over there?”
“Yes, he is being punished for giving the succession of apostles an ugly look. He will still be forgiven for his sins. It just takes longer for people like him. All of us have acted like hypocrites. It shouldn’t surprise you that even the best of us can and will fall at points in our life.”
Daniel sits in silence of thought before saying, “Thank you, father. I haven’t thought about it that way before.”
“It is my pleasure. Here, for your journey,” the priest blesses him with chrism, “Go in peace, my child.”
“Are you going to stay here?”
“Of course.”
“Why not go to Heaven?”
“The Church is Heaven on Earth. I’ve been in Heaven ever since I entered. It’s honestly better than dealing with a wife in my opinion.”

The priest and Daniel quietly laugh before Daniel walks away. He leaves the church with a fresh understanding of things and one more trial to go through before reaching Heaven.

The Process of Dying - Chapter 4 - Better than the "Angels"

Chapter 4 – Better than the “Angels”
As he moves forward to his next destination, Daniel notices that his body appears to have gotten better. It’s more angelic features shine brightly, and his skeletal features have come off like a snake’s skin. His skin is smooth and feels like it has a sort of power to it that has been bestowed upon him.
“You’re almost there, Daniel,” Azrael says.
“Does it get any harder from here?”
“If you let it. I can tell you that the last place we’re going to might be the hardest thing for you to witness, but I’m sure you’ll make it through.”
“I have a bad feeling I already know what it’s about.”
“Don’t worry about it now. Just focus on what you’re going to see next. It’s going to be a bit personal to me.”
“Oh, don’t you start you, big crybaby,” Cherub says, “You’ve been through this more than a thousand times.”
“Going through it multiple times doesn’t make it any easier!”
Azrael’s change of mood because of the next trial makes Daniel feel uneasy.
His guardian angel sees this and assures him that, “Don’t worry about me, Daniel. This is only going to be a little emotional for me.”
“Alright.”
The next place Daniel arrives at is a garden. It has many fruit trees and plants along with various kinds of animals in it with a river that runs through it that they can drink from. It’s almost as if this garden is the Garden of Eden since there are also flaming swords around the entrance. Azrael hands one of Daniel’s luggage to a gardener who appears to be a higher angel. No door is shut on Daniel to transform his surroundings. Instead, the swords around the garden turn in synch with the changing of the garden until they stop when they’re supposed to.
Everything around Daniel is now colorful, unlike Purgatory. This all seems to be perfect until several angels fall to the ground in front of Azrael. Legions of angels bring down a legion of angels who have become demons. The two sides fight in the garden, which ravages it until the angels win and force the demons into hell. With the battle over and the garden destroyed, some of the angels mourn for their brethren while others comfort them. Azrael sits underneath a tree in his normal angel form with Cherub, as a small angel.
He says to the two, “You two were part of this battle?”
“Heh, who wasn’t? I remember it like it was yesterday,” Azrael says, “Fighting my brothers and sisters wasn’t an easy feat for me. Not combat wise, but mentally. Sure, they deserved it, but I still cared about them.”
“Why do fallen angels hate humanity?”
“Humanity is God’s creation and as such He loves you. You can’t hurt or kill God, but even if you could, they wanted to just hurt Him instead because they rebelled Him. What greater way is there to hurt a person than to hurt his children? Imagine what it does to a father when he is forced to kick out his children from his house and no longer see them again. Every time a soul rebels against truth and goodness, not only do angels weep, but so does God Himself, but when they come back, there’s celebration.”
“Celebration? For every soul that comes back?”
“Every soul is of immeasurable value no matter how much they do. That’s another thing. Humans have various decisions and points in time where they can be redeemed or damned. Fallen angels only had one decision at one time. They had time to make this decision and they were in the direct presence of God, and yet, they chose damnation because of their pride. I don’t blame you if you hate them but remember that hate is isn’t a good weapon against the hateful. Do what an angel above me does and tell them that the Lord rebukes them. There’s nothing we can do for them.”
“I see. That’s what I’ll do then. You shouldn’t worry about them much either, Azrael. You have new brothers and sisters in humanity that care for you now. Including me.”
“Daniel…You’re something special.”
A flood washes over the three as they smile at each other. The flood takes the garden with it, but Daniel, Azrael, and Cherub are unaffected and don’t move until they appear back in the garden in Purgatory.
Azrael says, “You know some people say that if you're frightened of dying and you're holding on to life, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth. That line might be used in a different context, but you get what I’m saying, right?”
“I do.”
“Some of the people I’ve watched over and helped have seen me as a demon. I’ve lost some of them as a result because of my lost brothers and sisters.”
“It’s not your fault.”
“I know, but I can’t but feel guilty. Don’t worry about me though. What you said just helped me get over something I should’ve ages ago.”
“I guess that makes me special, doesn’t it?”
“In a way.”
“Come on you two. We’re almost at the end,” Cherub says.
“Oh, that’s right. Daniel, you’ve gone through these pretty well so far. This next one might be a bit of a doozy.”
“I can handle it.”
“That’s the attitude I love. With that, you’ll see your wife and children in no time.”
Mention of his family gives Daniel pause. He knows he has to face them eventually, so he swallows his uneasiness and keeps moving forward to Heaven.

The Process of Dying - Chapter 3 - The Beauty of Death

Chapter 3 – The Beauty of Death
Along the way to his next destination, Daniel asks Azrael, “Do you know if I’ll ever see those people again? The people I judged?”
“You’ll know when you enter Heaven.”
“I’m honestly a little afraid of seeing them again.”
“Don’t be. Everyone in Heaven is friendly. They are saints after all.”
“Oh, that’s right. I don’t think I judged them rightly. All I knew was what I remembered of them. I don’t exactly have all the facts to make a good judgment of them.”
“At least you didn’t judge hypocritically, which is important. You judged your best based on what you knew. A lot of people judge others without thinking if they themselves are doing the things they are criticizing the other person for. At least you aren’t like them. Your past has humbled you and given you wisdom in judgment.”
Daniel can feel himself about to cry, but his new body is unable to shed tears.
“Oh, now look what you’ve done to the poor man,” Cherub says.
“I’m okay, Cherub. I just feel grateful that this is the way I am to you. Part of me felt like I didn’t deserve it.”
“You shouldn’t worry about your feelings as much as your reason,” Azrael says.
“I try not to. I try to control my reason, so it does not become madness and my faith does not become blind.”
“That’s very good of you and one of the reasons why you’re here.”
“Tell me, do you have any favorite people that you’ve guarded?”
“All of you are my favorites. I know that may sound like a cheap answer, but can you really value one saint over another? It’s similar to saying the color red is better than the color blue. You can only give personal reasons as to why you think this is true because there is nothing about the two colors that make one better than the other.”
“That makes sense.”
“Why? Would you get jealous if I said you weren’t my favorite? Would you feel some sense of being special of I said you were my absolute favorite?”
“No, no.”
Azrael and Cherub look at Daniel with a smirk on their faces, which gets Daniel to admit, “Ok, a little.”
The three share a little laugh before coming to the next place to turn in Daniel’s luggage. They’re at a hospital now. Azrael gives Daniel’s next piece of luggage to a nurse and Daniel enters a patient’s room.
Curious, Daniel says, “I thought I already dealt with death.”
“You dealt with the reality of the afterlife. Not death itself and how it acts on Earth.”
The walls, floor, and ceiling separate themselves from each other, which makes Daniel fall to the Earth below. He lands on a mountaintop that allows him to see all of the suffering in the world.
Azrael appears beside him and says, “Horrible, isn’t it?”
“It is.”
“You’re seeing how humanity hurts itself constantly every day. Men will blame God for the lack of good people and good things in the world when it is they who destroy them. You see how many people die in the conflict instead of finding ways to become neighborly with one another. Innocent lives are lost, and families are destroyed as a result.”
“Are you showing me the ugliness of death and war?”
“War is ugly since it consumes lives. Death, on the other hand, permanently separates the good people from evil. It is the only monster that deals justice. Death will eventually die itself, but until then, it will continue to plague mankind and be used by men who don’t fully comprehend its true power.”
“What about people who kill in self-defense or to protect a good cause or country?”
“They are granted mercy.”
“And yet I’m granted mercy as well?”
“You spent the rest of your life repenting for your sins. You are forgiven, obviously.”
As the war continues on Earth, Daniel can see angels aiding good people to defend them while others are used as puppets by demons.
“Your actions didn’t do much for this struggle on Earth. In Heaven, you will be more active just like the other saints.”
“How?”
“You are in the presence of God. How else do you think? People in Heaven are conduits for beings and the one above all who can enact actual change on Earth.”
“I can’t wait to be up there then.”
A rainstorm passes over Daniel, washing some of the stains off his body. The storm then passes over the people on Earth. The rain is refreshing to some people while it acts like acid to others. Daniel and Azrael are then lifted back into Purgatory and are back outside the hospital.
“I never thought I’d enjoy a rainstorm,” Daniel says.
“I, on the other hand, hate it,” Cherub says, “I’m always getting soaked while Azrael somehow manages to stay dry.”
“And I thank you for that, my friend,” Azrael says as he shakes off Cherub to get him dry.
Daniel laughs a bit as he feels his soul glowing brightly in the inside.

The Process of Dying - Chapter 2 - Everyone's a Critic

Chapter 2 – Everyone’s a Critic
Some of the people that Daniel, Azrael, and Cherub are people that Daniel recognize not only in his life but from recent history as well.
The question comes to his mind so he asks Azrael, “How long do people stay in Purgatory?”
“As long as they need to, there is no time limit to being here.”
“I’ve heard of some of these people. They must’ve been here for decades.”
“Not everyone can get let go of the past and accept purification like you Daniel. One of the previous people I watched over took a while to accept the reality of his death and the reasons why people go to Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell.”
“Ugh, don’t remind me,” Cherub comments.
“And you didn’t help Cherub! You just kept quiet for the most part while making fun of me or my friend.”
“It’s not like you had any better ideas. Even the best reasons and arguments cannot penetrate a stubborn mind.”
“Looks who’s talking.”
As the two bicker, Daniel tries talking to people he passes by. They don’t seem to hear him, but the guardian angels do and wave at him with a smile. He tries to touch them, but his hand goes through them.
“Why can’t I interact with them?” Daniel asks.
Azrael stops his arguing with Cherub and says, “You are not part of their purification process and they are not part of yours. If you were, then they would hear you and you could interact with them. Some can’t even see you because you would derail their purification.”
“But why can I?”
“Because we know you won’t get too distracted by them.”
Daniel takes one look at the people he passes before deciding not to worry about them anymore.
The next place Azrael takes Daniel to is a courthouse. They go into the building and Azrael hands one of Daniel’s luggage to a desk attendant who looks similar to him.
He then opens the courtroom door for Daniel then says, “Sit in the judge’s seat. It’s the most comfortable one in the room.”
Once Daniel enters the room, Azrael closes the door behind him. Taking the advice of his guardian angel, Daniel sits at the judge’s seat. It is definitely a comfortable seat that’s more comfortable than any chair that Daniel has sat in recently. Daniel looks around the room and wonders what’s going to happen. When his eyes come back to the center of the room, he sees a strange but familiar man in front of the judge’s stand. The man has a grin that could scare adults with teeth on top of teeth. His nose is long, and it appears that parts of his face like his eyelids smile along with his mouth.
“Grant me mercy,” the man says with his uncanny smile.
Memories of him come back to Daniel. This man was a beggar who didn’t want to work a job or help others. He just wanted to live a lazy life where people gave him what he wanted. It was a wonder why so many people kept giving to him even though he never tried to improve his life.
“Why should you get mercy?” Daniel asks the grinning man.
“Aren’t all men worthy of mercy?” he asks.
“Most are, but not everyone makes the most of the mercy they are given.”
“What is your verdict then?”
“If I were a real judge, then you would get no mercy.”
The man changes to a woman Daniel knew. She was a friend of his, but she always be a problem. She always wanted charity from him and his family and friends. The woman could never get a husband or even hold a boyfriend for a while so she craved everyone’s pity.
“Grant me mercy,” she says.
“Why?” Daniel asks.
“Because I’m a good person. People say that I’m a joy to be around. Isn’t that enough?”
“I wouldn’t say so. Everyone thinks they’re the hero of their story. If I were a real judge, then you would get no mercy. You are no different than a parasite.”
The woman changes into another man that Daniel knew. A close friend who got up and left town because he fell in love with a woman who wasn’t even good for him. Everyone he knew tried to convince Daniel’s friend to stay away from this woman, but he didn’t listen.
“Grant me mercy,” he says.
Daniel can’t decide if he wants to hug his friend or punch him in his face. He says, “Why should I?”
“I listened to the sweet lies of a venomous woman. Every lonely man is weak to women like this. I’m sorry that I did this and hurt the people who actually loved me. You knew me better than she did. Can you find it in your heart to forgive me?”
“Of course I can brother.”
The friend changes into a woman Daniel wishes he could see while she didn’t see him at the same time.
“Husband,” she says, “Grant me mercy.”
“No, please grant me mercy, Rosemary. You should be in this seat judging me.”
“But you are the judge.”
“I do not want to be a judge.”
His wife changes into himself.
He says to himself, “Grant me mercy.”
“I’d grant you no mercy if I wasn’t already being given mercy in Purgatory,” Daniel says while standing up.
The other Daniel disappears. Daniel sits down and thinks about what’s being shown to him. Azrael enters the courtroom and stands besides Daniel.
Azrael says that, “Life is too short to hold onto to hate and eternity is too long to have it hold power over you. Tell me, why is it that you’ve held onto your hatred of certain people for so long?”
“They never gave me sufficient reason to think otherwise.”
“I’m sure if certain people you know did everything in their power to redeem themselves, you still wouldn’t forgive them.”
“What should I do then?”
“Let go of your anger. Say in your heart, “I forgive you” to them. Hatred is poison for the soul.”
Daniel closes his eyes and concentrates on getting rid of the hate within his heart, but to him, it feels like tearing off a leech that won’t let go.
“Just rip it off. It’s not like you can die again from the pain,” Azrael says.
Daniel does so, but it’s extremely painful.
“I didn’t say it wouldn’t hurt though. Congratulations Daniel.”
A shower of relief washes over Daniel as he gets rid of an unhealthy attachment. With this trial out of the way, he walks out of the courthouse feeling lighter than ever before.

The Process of Dying - Chapter 1 - Dead and Alive

Chapter 1 – Dead and Alive
As Daniel dies on his bed, the doctors try to keep him alive. No one prays for him on Earth or in the afterlife. No one by his side cares for him. His life slips away from his Earthly body and enters his new one in Purgatory. Everything around him appears to be dark with little light to illuminate his surroundings. The only colors here appear to be black, white, and gray. He’s on a bridge near a river. Wondering what he looks like, he looks down into the river to see that he’s wearing a black cloak. Half his face is a skeleton with pieces of his body gone leaving his skeletal body open to see.
“I guess I shouldn’t expect more for myself given what I’ve done,” Daniel says to himself.
He looks around again to see that his new eyes have adjusted to his surroundings to reveal a gloomy city. People similar to him, but not exactly the same, walk its streets. Their skulls and appearances vary to reflect their personality and their actions. Some have extended noses, eyes, mouths, oddly shaped bodies, and heads, and some are almost half the size of the houses and stores. They’re all walking alongside a person that is neither angel nor demon in appearance. The beings appear to be a mix of the two and their appearances vary as well.
One of these beings come up from behind Daniel and says, “Hello there, Daniel!”
Daniel is somewhat startled. The being’s appearance doesn’t help. The big smile on its skeletal face and the black hat, which is half a skull with a frowning face. The being wears what appears to be a horse carriage driver’s outfit, but a bit torn up.
“Who are you?”
“Don’t mind him,” the hat says, “He gets a bit too happy when he’s around people.”
“Oh, you’re right! My apologies,” the being says before taking off his hat and bowing. “My name is Azrael and my trusty assistant is named Cherub. We will assist you in carrying your luggage and showing you to your destinations this fine evening.”
“Where am I?”
“You’re in Purgatory. Only one step closer to Heaven,” Cherub says.
“That’s a relief.”
“If you think so.”
“What’s that’s supposed to mean?”
“Fret not my dear Daniel. You have nothing to worry about if you made it this far,” Azrael says as he picks up all of Daniel’s luggage that has appeared around him.
Daniel has seven huge bags of luggage that Azrael easily carries.
Azrael then says, “Let us be on our way then. This is going to be exciting, Daniel!”
“For you, it might, Azrael, but I doubt he’ll have any fun.”
Daniel follows Azrael and says, “What are these destinations you are taking me too?”
“Places to trade your luggage in. You don’t want to be like the ghosts on Earth who attach themselves to places, do you?”
“No, I guess not.”
“Good! You see Cherub? Daniel is a smart man who knows what to truly value.”
“What am I going to do at these destinations? Just trade in my luggage?”
“Not exactly. You’re going to have to trade one in then experience what you have to in order to move on. It’s nothing bad! Just imagining taking a hot shower.”
“Except the water is lava,” Cherub adds.
“Oh, shut it Cherub! The water only feels like lava if you make it feel that way.”
Even though Daniel knows how Purgatory works, he still feels uneasy about it.
He asks, “Were you assigned to me?”
“I’ve been assigned to you since your birth.”
“You’re my guardian angel then?”
“Of course I am! Are you excited to finally see me in the flesh? Or should I say in the spirit?”
“Not really, no.”
“That’s understandable based on your life experiences. I’m sorry you feel that way, but I’m still overjoyed that you made it this far!”
“Is it because you’ll finally be free of me at the end?”
“That’s not it at all! I just want to see you happy.”
“I find that hard to believe, but I guess I should just accept it at this point.”
“Now that’s the spirit, no pun intended.”
“You intended it, Azrael.”
“Maybe I did. Hahaha.”
Azrael takes Daniel to a store that appears to sell coffins. He shoves one of Daniel’s luggage into a keyhole and the door opens.
“Everyone here has to go through this first, so step in. Don’t worry about what you see.”
After Daniel steps into the store, the door behind him slams shut. The store around Daniel changes as it decays, and weeds take it over. The building roof and walls rise from the ground and into the sky. Darkness fills where the city once was and lifts to reveal a field full of weeds and thorns in a graveyard. Man-sized crows with black wings and skinless skulls wander the graveyard. They pecked at skeletons and coffins. Daniel quietly watches them, anxious about what might happen.
He doesn’t know what to do and whispers, “Azrael, are you there?”
The disembodied voice of Azrael says, “I’m here, Daniel.”
“What am I supposed to do here?”
“You’ll see soon enough. This is going to be exciting!”
“For you, it is,” Cherub interrupts, “But for him, it might not be.”
As the large crows break apart the bodies, spirits come out of them. Some appear to be demons, some appear to be skeletal angels, while very few are angels. The demons stray away from the light above and try flying to Heaven on their own without its light and fall down to the fires below. The angels fly up to Heaven as they barely stray from the light and the Gates of Heaven open wide open for them. Last, but not least, the skeletal angels struggle to stay in the light. They land on the clouds surrounding Heaven and the clouds in Heaven rain down on them to clean them before the Gates of Heaven open to them. As Daniel looks down, he sees his body being picked at by the skeletal crows. Before he can do anything, rain falls on him. Steaming rain that erodes the sin off the horns of sinful humans and grotesque and mutated features they have infected themselves with.
Eventually, everything around Daniel erodes and he’s back in the coffin shop. He walks outside to see Azrael and Cherub waiting for him with his luggage.
“Wasn’t that interesting? The crows of decomposition are a wonderous thing, aren’t they?” Azrael asks.
Daniel responds, “It was. Can I ask you what kind of people go to Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell?”
“Of course you can. Everyone that goes to Heaven is a saint. They may make a few mistakes here or there, but their devotion to doing good every day of their life totally eclipses their failings. They don’t need to do miracles like canonized saints, but they do need to live like one. Those in Purgatory are people whose vices still get the better of them, but they’re still devoted to doing good like the saints. Therefore, they are purified in Purgatory so they can enter Heaven without any blemishes. In Hell, there are no innocent people. They are those who have forsaken the truth and strayed away from goodness itself in order to live out their own truth, which is a lie since anything that isn’t wholly the truth is a lie. Hell is a choice made by adult men and women though young children don’t go to Hell since they are still young in soul. They are given another chance while the adults who are rebellious and childlike in mind aren’t.”
“I understand now. Thank you for the wise teaching.”
“It’s my pleasure, Daniel. Are you ready to continue your adventure? It’s only going to get better from here.”
“I’m ready.”
“That’s great! Now let’s hurry along. I’m sure you’re eager to see what’s next.”
“Or dreading,” Cherub says.
“I’m both,” Daniel thinks to himself.
