God helps those who suffer. He punishes the wicked, is reasonable, frees the ignorant with truth, and brings joy to downtrodden hearts, but these don't seem to be the case in the short stories in this collection, however, they are true in the same stories. Through trials, the characters of these stories will see the wisdom of God in these apparent contradictions.
